If your iPhone isn’t vibrating, first check Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration and make sure Vibration is on. Then check the setting for the specific feedback that’s missing: calls and alerts, keyboard typing, or system interactions each have a separate control. If vibration fails only in Silent Mode, check the Haptics setting for that mode and test with Focus turned off.
First, identify which haptics are missing
iPhone vibration is controlled in several places. Notice whether the problem affects all vibration, only calls and alerts, keyboard typing, system controls, or vibration only while Silent Mode is on. Start with the matching setting below; if nothing vibrates in any context, check the global control first.
- Calls and alerts: The phone does not vibrate for incoming calls or notifications.
- Keyboard: Typing produces no tactile response.
- System interactions: Taps or other controls no longer provide haptic feedback.
- Silent Mode only: Vibration works in other sound modes but not when the phone is silenced.
Turn on the global Vibration setting
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration and turn on Vibration. This is the global control: if it is off, vibration is disabled, including for emergency alerts such as earthquake and tsunami alerts, according to Apple’s iPhone guide.
Fix vibration for calls and alerts
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose a behavior that allows haptics in the sound mode you’re using. Options listed in Apple’s guide to sounds and vibrations include Always Play, Play in Silent Mode, Don’t Play in Silent Mode, and Never Play. Never Play disables vibration for incoming calls and alerts.

You can also check the vibration pattern for an individual sound category in Sounds & Haptics. A category with no vibration pattern selected will not provide its own alert vibration; choose an available pattern if you want one.
Why your iPhone may not vibrate in Silent Mode
Silent Mode does not automatically mean vibration is off. In Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, select Play in Silent Mode if you want calls and alerts to vibrate while the phone is silent. Apple’s Silent Mode troubleshooting steps also recommend checking Focus: open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off Do Not Disturb temporarily to see whether expected calls or alerts return.

Restore keyboard haptics
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and turn on Haptic. If it is already enabled but typing still has no tactile response, verify that the global Vibration setting at Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration is on. Apple documents these steps for iOS 16 or later in its keyboard sounds and haptics guide. Apple notes that keyboard haptics may affect battery life.
Turn on haptics for system interactions
If alerts and keyboard feedback work but taps or other system controls feel different, check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > System Haptics. This switch controls feedback for system controls and interactions; it is separate from the Haptics behavior setting for incoming calls and alerts. The setting is described in Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

When settings do not restore vibration
If the global Vibration setting is on and the relevant call, keyboard, or system haptics control is enabled, but the iPhone still does not vibrate in any context, contact Apple or an authorized service provider for a device-specific diagnosis. The Apple support materials cited here do not identify a universal hardware test or establish which component has failed. A repair or replacement part should not be chosen without identifying the iPhone model and obtaining a diagnosis.
Menu wording and available controls can vary by iOS version and iPhone model. Apple’s keyboard instructions cover iOS 16 or later; the current iPhone User Guide results used here include an iOS 27 page. Apple does not provide a complete version-by-version and model-by-model settings matrix in these materials.
