If Handoff is not appearing on your iPhone, first check that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, use the same Apple Account, and have Handoff enabled. Then test with an app that supports Handoff on both devices, leaving the active task open and the source device unlocked and nearby. These are Apple’s documented requirements; no single check guarantees a fix for every failure.
Check that the app and task can be handed off
Handoff is a built-in Apple Continuity feature; it does not require an additional app. It continues some tasks between supported apps, rather than transferring every app or every action.

Confirm that the app is installed on both the source iPhone and the device that should receive the task. Apple lists Calendar, Contacts, FaceTime, Keynote, Mail, Maps, Pages, Numbers, Reminders, and Safari as examples. Its setup guidance also names Clock, Freeform, News, Notes, and Stocks; some third-party apps support Handoff as well.
Identify the receiving device before testing: it may be an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. If the app or task does not support Handoff, the receiving device may not show a continuation control.

Turn on Handoff on both devices
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity.
- Turn on Handoff. Depending on the software version, the menu may instead be labeled AirPlay & Handoff.
Repeat these steps on the other iPhone or iPad if it is the receiving device.
On Mac
- On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff, depending on the version).
- Enable Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
On older macOS versions, Apple documents the path as Apple menu > System Preferences > General. Check the Handoff option there.

Verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Apple Account
On both devices, make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on and that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s Handoff instructions do not say that both devices must join the same Wi-Fi network, so being on different networks by itself does not establish the cause of a failure.
Run a clean handoff test and look in the right place
- On the source iPhone, open a supported app and display an active task, such as a page in Safari or a message in Mail.
- Leave the app in front and keep the iPhone unlocked. Bring it near the receiving device; Apple’s Mac guide gives a maximum proximity of 30 feet (10 meters).
- On the receiving device, look for the Handoff control: at the bottom of the iPhone App Switcher, in the iPad Dock, or toward the right side of the Mac Dock. If the Mac Dock sits along a screen edge, check the corresponding end of that Dock. On Mac, Command-Tab can also show the Handoff app icon.
- Select the Handoff control to continue the task in the receiving device’s app.
If the control still does not appear, repeat the test with another Apple app known to support Handoff and installed on both devices. That can help distinguish an app-specific limitation from a general setup problem.

Check device and operating-system compatibility
Apple’s compatibility list includes iPhone 5 or later with iOS 8 or later; iPad Pro, iPad (4th generation or later), iPad Air, and iPad mini models; iPod touch (5th generation or later); Apple Watch models; and Mac models meeting Apple’s listed model-year minimums with OS X Yosemite 10.10 or later. Check Apple’s current requirements page for the specific Mac model-year thresholds and supported device details before concluding a device is incompatible.
FaceTime call handoff has higher minimum software requirements than general Handoff: iOS or iPadOS 16 or later and macOS Ventura 13 or later. A FaceTime call that cannot move between devices therefore does not, on its own, show that ordinary task handoff is unsupported.

Review VPN configuration if one is active
Apple notes that a VPN configuration that prevents local networking may interfere with some Continuity features. If you use a VPN and the checks above have not helped, review its configuration or ask its provider whether local networking is blocked. Apple does not identify one universal VPN setting or say that every VPN causes Handoff problems.
