Battery drain and warmth can be temporary while iOS finishes update-related work; Apple recommends waiting a few days after an update, then checking battery life again. If an app is crashing, troubleshoot that app, its network connection, and available storage. If you decide to remove the installed beta, know that restoring public iOS erases the iPhone, and a backup made on beta software may not work with an earlier iOS version.
Why an iPhone may drain battery or feel warm after a beta update
iOS may continue background tasks after installation, and Apple says this can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Its guidance is to wait a few days after updating and then reassess battery life. That does not establish that a particular beta build is defective: the exact iPhone model, beta version, and timing matter, and symptoms alone do not identify their cause.
Warmth is also not automatically overheating. An iPhone can feel warmer during an update, initial setup, a backup restore, wireless charging, or demanding app use. It should cool after the activity ends. Apple’s stated ambient operating range is 0–35°C (32–95°F); sustained exposure to very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or prolonged direct sun.
Check what is using the battery
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review any battery suggestions or insights, daily usage, and the apps or system activities shown as using power. Available charts and controls can vary by iOS version and device.
- Look for activity that could explain the change, such as an app working in the background, weak mobile coverage, or frequent notifications. Do not assume the battery itself is defective based only on a post-update drop.
- If Battery Health displays Service, Apple recommends considering battery replacement to restore full performance and capacity. That status is a service indication, not evidence that the beta caused battery wear.
Apple’s current battery guidance says to wait a few days after an update before checking again, because update-related background work may still be finishing. If the drain continues, use the Battery page’s activity details to identify whether a particular app or system activity coincides with it.

What to do if the iPhone is hot
If the phone is merely warm during an update, restore, charge, or intensive task, stop or let that activity finish and give the device time to cool. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from hot surroundings. Apple describes 0–35°C (32–95°F) as the ambient operating range for iPhone; very hot conditions can shorten battery life.
If an iPhone displays a temperature warning, turn it off, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and let it cool before using it again. Do not put it in a refrigerator or use another rapid-cooling method.

Thermal protections can dim or turn off the display, slow or stop charging, reduce mobile signal, temporarily disable camera functions, or lower performance. These responses protect the device; they are not, by themselves, proof that the beta has damaged it.
Fix an app that crashes or stops responding
- Close the unresponsive app. Reopen it and see whether the problem recurs.
- Check the connection. If the app depends on the internet, test whether the network is working reliably; weak or interrupted connectivity can affect app behavior.
- Check available storage. Make sure the iPhone has space available, especially if the app is failing while loading or saving content.
- Check the exact beta release. Apple’s release notes list changes and fixes by version. Match the installed build before concluding that a listed fix applies.
A single app freeze does not prove the beta is responsible, and Apple’s general app guidance does not establish one universal beta-specific crash fix. Avoid repeatedly force-closing every app: Apple warns that reopening closed apps takes longer and unnecessary force-closing can slow the device.

Check the beta version before attributing the problem to a bug
Note the iPhone model, the installed iOS beta build, when installation finished, and when the symptoms began. If battery drain, warmth, or crashes persist, compare the exact release with Apple’s iOS release notes. Do not assume that a fix for another version or model applies to yours, or that a future beta will resolve the issue.
Stay on the beta or restore public iOS?
The choice depends on how severe and persistent the symptoms are, what the Battery page or app behavior shows, and whether your priority is testing beta software or returning to a public release. If the phone remains usable and the issue began just after updating, waiting a few days and checking activity again may be less disruptive than erasing it.

Before restoring, verify that you have an appropriate archived backup and understand the erase-and-restore consequences. Apple’s instructions for removing beta software explain the available paths; the installed beta is not removed just by turning off Beta Updates.

For a connection-related restore error, Apple recommends trying the cable supplied with the iPhone or another Apple-certified cable, then a different USB port or computer. Match the cable to the ports on both the iPhone and computer. This advice is for a computer restore connection problem; it does not address routine battery drain, warmth, or app crashes.
