Treat an AI-generated itinerary as a draft, not a booking confirmation. Flag details that could affect money, access, transport, or legal entry; verify each one with the organization that controls the current information; correct only the affected entries; and check the full plan again before booking or departure.
Which itinerary details should you check first?
Prioritize claims that can change your costs, ability to travel, or access to a place. An AI itinerary can sound precise while relying on information that is incomplete or no longer current.
- Flights: travel date, departure and arrival times, airport, terminal, and reservation details.
- Entry requirements: visa, passport, and other requirements for your destination and circumstances.
- Attractions and venues: opening hours, closures, timed-entry rules, advance reservations, prices, and availability.
- Local transport: routes, service changes, stations, connections, and travel time between stops.
- Booking and cost: whether a reservation is actually confirmed, what it covers, and whether the listed price or availability still applies.
A travel-specific checklist also recommends checking venue status, advance booking, price and availability, and realistic travel time before making nonrefundable bookings (Travelers Copilot’s itinerary verification guide).
How to correct an AI-generated travel plan
- Mark each claim that needs verification. Write down the specific item and the date it applies to—for example, “museum hours on Tuesday, 12 May,” rather than “museum schedule.” This makes it easier to compare like with like.
- Check the source responsible for that information. Use the airline or booking provider for flight and reservation details; the venue for its hours, closures, admission rules, and tickets; the local transit operator for routes and service; and the relevant government for entry rules and travel advisories. The right authority depends on the destination and service. The Government of Canada advises that generated content is not authoritative and should be checked against trusted sources (Guide on the use of generative artificial intelligence).
- Compare exact details. Confirm the date, local time zone, location, terminal or station, reservation status, and any restrictions. For a sequence of stops, check that the travel time and order are physically plausible. Prefer a current official page, your provider account, booking confirmation, or a direct message from the provider over an old article or search-result snippet.
- Update only the affected entries. If you want the AI tool to help revise the plan, give it the verified fact and its source or date, and ask it to change only the relevant item. For example: “The venue’s official page lists a 10 a.m. opening on this date. Update that stop and adjust only the timing that depends on it.” Treat the result as an editing aid, then check the revised schedule yourself.
- Resolve consequential uncertainty before committing. Do not rely on an unresolved detail for a nonrefundable booking or other irreversible decision. If the AI cannot answer, contradicts the provider, or leaves an important question unclear, contact the responsible organization or a human specialist. Delta says not to rely solely on its AI tool’s responses and directs users to a reservations specialist when the tool cannot answer or conflicts with official information (Delta Air Lines AI Terms of Use).
- Recheck volatile details near departure. Flight schedules, operating hours, routes, and disruptions can change after you make the itinerary. Check the relevant provider’s channels again before travel. For flight updates, Toronto Pearson advises passengers to rely on published airline information and direct airline emails, texts, or app messages (Toronto Pearson’s 2026 warning about AI-generated flight misinformation).
How to choose a reliable verification source
Use the source that owns or controls the fact, and make sure it matches your exact trip. A government page may establish entry rules, but it will not confirm a particular airline reservation; an airport may publish operational updates, but the airline or booking provider is the place to check the details of your ticket.

For each source, ask whether it is authoritative for the claim, current for your travel date, specific to your location or booking, and able to confirm or change the relevant service. The Government of Canada also cautions against using generative AI as a search engine unless its sources can be verified.
What to do when official sources disagree or the answer remains unclear
Do not let the AI decide which conflicting claim is correct. Check whether the pages refer to the same date, location, flight, ticket type, or time zone; then contact the organization responsible for the item and ask for confirmation. Keep your booking confirmation or other relevant details available when contacting a provider.

The responsible organization varies by issue: a carrier or booking provider for a flight or reservation, a venue for its own admission rules, a transit operator for its service, and a government authority for entry requirements. The applicable rules and remedies also depend on the destination, provider, and jurisdiction. If an essential fact is still unresolved, pause the decision that depends on it rather than treating the AI’s answer as confirmation. GOV.UK guidance on AI-enabled services likewise emphasizes accuracy, human contact, and monitoring (Using artificial intelligence (AI) in services).

An AI tool may generate plausible details without establishing that a booking exists or that schedules, prices, rules, and availability are current. Delta states, “You should not rely solely upon the responses provided by the AI Tools.” The Government of Canada’s guidance is similarly direct: “Don’t consider generated content as authoritative.” These are useful principles for trip planning: use AI to draft or reorganize a plan, but confirm important facts with the source responsible for them.
