It does not necessarily mean the message failed or that your iPhone is broken. To troubleshoot, first check whether the message was marked Not Delivered; then check your connection, iMessage settings, and selected phone line.
What “Sent as Text Message” means
iMessage sends messages between Apple devices over Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS/MMS and RCS use carrier messaging, and messages sent through those services appear in green bubbles. A green bubble alone does not establish that anything is wrong with your iPhone; it means the conversation used a service other than iMessage. See Apple’s explanations of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS.
Apple’s Messages settings can be configured to try SMS automatically when iMessage is unavailable. That fallback can get a message through, but it does not repair an iMessage connection, activation, or account problem. SMS availability and any charges depend on your carrier and plan.
Fix a message that says “Not Delivered”
- Check that your iPhone has a working Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Tap the red alert beside the undelivered message and choose Try Again.
- If it still will not send and the option appears, choose Send as Text Message. Carrier messaging rates may apply; check your plan if you are unsure.

Choose whether to allow automatic SMS fallback
To let Messages try sending an SMS when iMessage is unavailable, open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on Send as Text Message. If you prefer not to use carrier texts automatically, leave it off; when iMessage is unavailable, you may need to restore the connection or choose another available sending option yourself. SMS fallback is not guaranteed: your carrier, service, and plan must support it. If the control is missing, Apple says your provider may not support the feature.
Check the connection and the recipient
For iMessage
Make sure the iPhone can reach the internet over Wi-Fi or mobile data. If the connection is unavailable or unreliable, iMessage may not send. Restore connectivity, then retry the message.

For SMS, MMS, or RCS
These are carrier messaging services and generally require mobile network service. Wi-Fi Calling can support SMS over Wi-Fi when available through your carrier. If carrier messages are not sending or arriving, ask your carrier about service, plan support, and any applicable charges.
For a particular conversation
Check that the recipient’s phone number or email address is correct. A message may use carrier texting rather than iMessage if the destination is not reachable through iMessage.

Check iMessage after setup or a phone-line change
If the problem began after setting up the iPhone, changing a SIM, or changing lines, confirm that the intended line is active and that iMessage is set to use the right number.
- Install an iOS update if one is available.
- Open Settings > Cellular and confirm the intended line is turned on. With multiple SIMs, check the line associated with the number you want to use.
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages, turn iMessage off, then turn it back on.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and select the intended phone number.
Menu wording can differ by iOS version or language. Apple’s current documented route uses Settings > Apps > Messages.

Restart the iPhone and get the right support
Restart the iPhone, then check whether the issue affects only carrier messages or iMessage as well. Contact your wireless carrier for SMS, MMS, or RCS delivery and plan questions. If iMessage remains unavailable after checking the connection and settings, contact Apple Support.
