You can choose to load that message’s content, review Mail’s privacy settings, and then check your connection if the issue persists.
What missing images in Mail can mean
Email images may be embedded in the message or loaded from a remote server. Apple’s guidance for Mail’s remote-content warning explains that privacy protections can limit or defer remote downloads. On Mac, a setting called Block All Remote Content can prevent remote images from downloading until you allow them. A VPN is one circumstance in which Mail on iPhone or iPad may show that it cannot load remote content privately.
Apple describes the warning in its support article “If you see ‘Unable to load remote content privately’ at the top of an email”, published March 20, 2024.
Fix the issue on iPhone
Load remote content for one message
If the warning appears and you want to see that email’s remote images, tap Load Content. Apple says this displays the content but bypasses Mail Privacy Protection for that load. If your iPhone is using a VPN, the content is routed through the VPN instead of Mail Privacy Protection. Choose this only if you’re comfortable with that privacy tradeoff.

Apple’s instructions for the remote-content warning explain when this option is available and what it does.
Review Mail Privacy Protection
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Privacy Protection.
- Check whether Protect Mail Activity is enabled. Apple says Limit IP Address Tracking must also be enabled for the Wi-Fi network for Mail Privacy Protection to work.
- If a setting is missing or labeled differently on your iOS version, use Settings search to find Mail or the privacy option.
These are Apple’s current iPhone instructions in its Mail Privacy Protection guide. Don’t turn off privacy protection as a blanket fix; first decide whether loading a particular message’s content is worth the privacy tradeoff.

Fix the issue on iPad
If the iPad shows “Unable to load remote content privately,” tap Load Content only if you want to display that message’s remote images and accept the same privacy tradeoff described above. Apple’s warning guidance covers iPadOS 15 and later.
Also confirm the iPad is online. The iPhone settings path above is not presented here as a verified iPad-specific path; Apple’s cited instructions establish the warning and per-message action for iPad, but not an exact current iPad menu route for Mail Privacy Protection.

Fix the issue on Mac
Review Mail’s privacy settings
- Open Mail and choose Mail > Settings > Privacy.
- Review Protect Mail Activity. Apple says it hides your IP address from senders and privately downloads remote content in the background.
- If Protect Mail Activity is off, check whether Block All Remote Content is selected. That setting stops remote content from downloading until you choose to permit it. Mail indicates when a viewed message contains remote content.
See Apple’s Mac Mail privacy settings guide. Disabling privacy protection is not a universal solution; use the setting that matches your privacy preference.
Check the connection if images still do not appear
- Confirm the iPhone, iPad, or Mac has an internet connection.
- Check with your email provider for an outage if messages or their content are not loading as expected.
- If Mac Mail says it cannot connect even though the Mac is online, check whether a VPN or other software that interacts with network connections is affecting Mail.
Apple’s Mail connection troubleshooting guide covers network and account connection issues. If only remote images are missing while the rest of the message works, start with the message warning and privacy settings rather than changing the account.

When to change or remove a mail account
Changing or deleting account settings is a later step for broader problems receiving email—not a first fix for one missing image. Apple warns that changing or removing an account can remove previously downloaded email from the device. Before doing so, confirm your messages are available through your email provider or saved elsewhere. Follow Apple’s account and connection guidance if Mail has a wider receive problem.
