A missing icon thumbnail does not by itself mean the image is damaged. Finder’s icon preview, Finder’s preview pane, Preview, and Quick Look thumbnail generation are separate ways to inspect a file. Your next step depends on which of those paths can display the image.
What a missing thumbnail actually tells you
Finder can show a small picture inside an icon, while its preview pane shows a larger preview and details for the selected item. Preview is a separate app that opens image files, and macOS’s Quick Look Thumbnailing capability supplies thumbnails used by Finder and Spotlight. These paths can fail independently.
Therefore, a plain JPEG, PNG, HEIC or other generic icon is only evidence that Finder is not currently drawing an icon thumbnail. It is not proof that the file is corrupt. Test the file itself before changing settings or attempting repairs.
Use this diagnostic sequence first
- Open one affected image in Preview. In Finder, select the file, Control-click it, choose Open With, and select Preview. You can also double-click if Preview is the default app.
- Show Finder’s preview pane. In the affected folder, open Finder’s View menu and choose Show Preview (the wording can vary by macOS release). Select the file and look at the pane on the right.
- Compare scope. Check one file whose icon is generic and another image that does show a thumbnail. Note each extension, location and your macOS version. This comparison identifies a one-file symptom versus a broader Finder or thumbnailing symptom; it is not, by itself, a compatibility test.
- Check Quick Look. With the file selected, press the Space bar. A Quick Look window may show the contents even when the small Finder icon remains generic. That result points toward an icon-preview or thumbnail-generation display issue rather than immediate proof of file damage.
Interpret the results

Restore Finder icon previews
Turn on the per-folder icon-preview option
Finder has a Show icon preview setting in its view options. Open the affected folder, choose View > Show View Options, and look for Show icon preview. If it is available and unchecked, enable it. The exact placement and wording can shift between macOS versions, so use the View menu for the folder you are examining.

This setting controls whether Finder draws picture content inside icons. It does not repair an image that Preview cannot open, and enabling it does not establish that every format will receive a thumbnail on every macOS release.
Use the preview pane as a working alternative
If the pane displays the image but icons remain generic, leave the preview pane enabled while you work. It provides a larger inspection area and file details without opening each image. This is a display workaround, not evidence that the underlying icon-thumbnail service has been repaired.
Check whether the problem is limited to one file type or update
Make a small comparison set: one affected image, one image with a working thumbnail, and—if available—another image from the same source. Record the extension, whether the files are local or on an external or network volume, and whether the symptom began after a macOS update. The official documentation does not provide a definitive current matrix of still-image formats and Finder-thumbnail support, so do not label a format “unsupported” solely because its icon is generic.

Do not rename an extension just to force a thumbnail. An extension is a label, not a conversion, and changing it can make the file harder for apps to identify. If Preview opens the image, keep the original file unchanged while diagnosing Finder.
What to do when Preview cannot open the image
- Verify that you selected the intended file rather than an alias, shortcut or similarly named item.
- Try the file from its current location in Finder and note whether the failure affects only that item or a group of files.
- Check the filename and extension without changing them. Preserve a copy before experimenting with any conversion or repair workflow.
- If the file still will not open, seek help for the app or macOS version you are running. A missing Finder thumbnail is not enough information to diagnose the cause of an unreadable image.
Be cautious with cache-reset commands
Quick Look Thumbnailing is the macOS mechanism used by Finder and Spotlight to obtain thumbnails, but that fact does not make every cache-deletion command an Apple-approved fix for still images. Online instructions often come from troubleshooting pages for non-native video extensions. Those procedures are scoped to the extension and its video-support problem, not established as a universal still-image repair.
Do not delete Quick Look or Finder caches merely because an icon is generic, and do not run a command copied from a video-plugin guide without confirming its macOS version, purpose and risk. If you later use a cache-reset step from a source that specifically supports your macOS release and still-image symptom, document the source and understand that it may not solve the issue. The safer first-line tests are Preview, the preview pane, Quick Look and a controlled file comparison.

Common symptoms and the next move
Every image in one folder has a generic icon
Check Show icon preview for that folder, then select one file and inspect the preview pane. If the pane works, you have a folder-view or icon-display symptom. If neither pane nor Preview works, broaden the investigation beyond icon rendering.
Only one image is affected
Open it directly in Preview and compare its extension and location with a working image. If Preview opens it, retain the file and focus on Finder’s thumbnail path. If Preview fails, treat it as an individual file or application issue rather than a proven cache problem.
Icons disappeared after a macOS update
Write down the exact macOS version and the date you noticed the change. Test a known-working image and the preview pane before attempting any cleanup. Version information gives Apple or your administrator a reproducible symptom; it is more useful than reporting only that “thumbnails are gone.”
Quick Look works but Finder icons do not
That split confirms that the file can be rendered by at least one macOS inspection path. Keep using Quick Look or the preview pane, verify the icon-preview option, and report the split result if you escalate. Do not infer a damaged image from the generic icon.
Preview works but the preview pane is blank
Record the file extension, location and macOS version, then test another image. Because Finder’s pane and Preview are separate components, this combination narrows the problem to Finder’s preview path without identifying a specific cause.

Include the macOS version, the image extension, where the file is stored, whether Preview opens it, whether Quick Look opens it, whether Finder’s preview pane displays it, and whether other images are affected. Mention if the symptom began after an update. Avoid claiming that a cache is damaged unless a qualified support source has established that diagnosis for your exact version and file type.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will rebuilding a thumbnail change the original image?
No thumbnail setting or preview-pane check should be treated as an image conversion. Keep the original file unchanged and work from a copy if you later test another application.
Should I use a video-extension cache command for still pictures?
Not as a general fix. Video-plugin troubleshooting instructions are scoped to those extensions and are not established as Apple-approved repair steps for still-image thumbnails.
What information should I give Apple Support or an administrator?
