If your CPU runs unusually hot after you install an all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler, first check that the cold plate is seated correctly and the pump is powered. Then verify the radiator fans and airflow, and confirm the radiator is positioned to keep air away from the pump. Do not assume one temperature is safe for every processor: compare readings with your exact CPU’s published thermal limit and the workload that produced them.
First, identify when the temperature rises
Check whether the high reading appears in BIOS with the system otherwise idle, during a sustained workload, or only during short boosts. BIOS idle readings can help distinguish minimal-load behavior from heat generated by demanding work. Note whether the CPU throttles, the computer shuts down, or the cooler makes unusual noises. Those symptoms help separate a mounting or airflow issue from a possible pump or blockage problem.
Use the thermal limit for your exact processor as a reference, not as an idle-temperature target. NZXT’s 2026 guidance, citing AMD and Intel product-page data as of November 11, 2025, lists TJMAXX values of 95°C for the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and Ryzen 7 9700X; 105°C for the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and Core Ultra 7 265K; and 100°C for the Intel Core i5-14400F. These are examples, not universal limits. See NZXT’s overheating guidance and check the specifications for your own CPU.
Check the CPU block installation
A block that does not make even, firm contact with the CPU can transfer heat poorly, even if the rest of the cooler appears to work. Intel’s processor overheating guide advises checking cooler compatibility, removing protective film, fastening the cooler correctly, and applying the right amount of thermal interface material. NZXT also identifies incorrect installation or the wrong socket backplate or standoffs as possible causes of poor contact in its Kraken troubleshooting guide.

- Shut down the computer and switch off or unplug its power before handling the cooler.
- Check the cooler manual for the correct socket bracket, backplate, and standoffs for your motherboard and processor.
- Make sure the protective film has been removed from the cold plate and that the block sits evenly on the CPU.
- If the mounting looks suspect, remove the block, clean the old thermal paste, and apply fresh paste following the cooler maker’s instructions. Reinstall and tighten the block as directed by the manual.
Do not guess at tightening pressure or paste quantity: mounting hardware and instructions differ by cooler model.
Verify pump power and operation
Check the pump’s reported speed in BIOS or the cooler’s control software, then trace every connection using the wiring diagram for your exact AIO and the motherboard manual. Depending on the model, the pump may have separate power, speed-sensing, USB, or motherboard connections, and the required header or control setting can vary.

A pump reading of 0 RPM or N/A can point to a power or connection issue, but confirm the wiring and header settings before concluding that the pump has failed. Corsair’s AIO troubleshooting guidance and NZXT’s Kraken guide provide model-specific checks. If the reading remains abnormal after those checks, avoid opening the sealed loop and contact the manufacturer.
Check radiator fans, fins, and case airflow
- Confirm that the radiator fans spin and that their cables are connected as specified by the cooler instructions.
- Remove dust and debris from the radiator fins without damaging them. NZXT includes radiator cleaning in its Kraken troubleshooting steps.
- Check that case intake and exhaust paths are not blocked and that fans are not obstructed.
A working pump cannot compensate for stopped radiator fans or severely restricted airflow, so check these basics before assuming the AIO itself has failed.

Confirm radiator position keeps air away from the pump
In a sealed AIO, some air can collect in the loop. Corsair and NZXT advise positioning the radiator’s highest point above the pump so trapped air stays away from it. Top mounting is a common option when the case supports it; front mounting can also work. The exact radiator fit and tube-orientation guidance depend on the case and cooler, so follow the maker’s installation guide rather than applying one orientation rule to every model. Know when to stop troubleshooting
If the pump still reports 0 RPM or N/A after you have verified its connections and settings, temperatures remain abnormal, or the system shuts down or the cooler makes concerning noises, contact the cooler manufacturer for support or warranty service. Check the warranty status before removing or replacing the unit. Do not drain, refill, or open a sealed AIO as a repair: Corsair warns that opening or modifying its cooler can void its warranty, and NZXT says its Kraken closed-loop systems are not intended to be drained or refilled. Persistent signs of blockage or pump failure call for manufacturer support, not loop disassembly.

Decide whether repair or replacement is justified
Do not replace the cooler simply because temperatures are higher than expected. Use the evidence you have gathered to distinguish installation or contact problems from a fan, pump, or blockage fault. If replacement is under consideration, check the CPU’s power and thermal requirements against the cooler’s capacity, verify socket compatibility and case radiator clearance, and review the warranty and manufacturer instructions. Without the processor, cooler, case, workload, and observed readings, there is no sound basis for a blanket recommendation to buy a larger AIO.
