Max’s support pages cover general playback problems; they do not identify a technical fault specific to Lanterns.
Lanterns arrived on HBO Max on August 16, 2026, according to the official trailer description. An official channel description says new episodes stream Sundays at 9 p.m.; schedules and availability can vary by territory. See the HBO Max press release for the series announcement and debut window.
Why does HBO Max keep buffering?
Buffering means playback is waiting for more video data. A slow or inconsistent connection is one possible cause, but a problem limited to one device, an app installation, or a browser setting can produce similar symptoms. Use the comparisons below to narrow down where to troubleshoot.
Check whether it happens on one device or several
- Try Max on another supported device connected to the same network.
- If the second device plays normally, focus on the original device, its Max app, or its connection.
- If multiple devices buffer, investigate the shared network and competing activity on it.
Max recommends this comparison to help distinguish network-related trouble from a device-specific issue. Its playback troubleshooting guidance varies by device.

Check your internet connection and network activity
Max says a slow or inconsistent internet connection can cause buffering or lower video quality. Its help guidance lists a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps for HD and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K in instructions for selected devices. These are Max’s support figures, not guarantees of smooth playback: consistency, other household traffic, device limits, and local network conditions also matter. Check the instructions for your particular device in the Max Help Center.
If others are using the same Wi-Fi for bandwidth-heavy activities, ask them to pause those activities briefly and try playback again. If the buffering improves, competing network use may be contributing.

How to troubleshoot Max buffering, step by step
1. Restart the network and playback device
For computers and mobile devices, Max’s instructions include powering off the playback device, unplugging the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnecting them, and trying again once the connection is back. Exact restart steps differ by platform, so follow the relevant device instructions in Max’s troubleshooting guide.
2. Update Max and your device
Install available updates for the Max app and your device’s operating software, then restart and test playback. Depending on the platform, Max also recommends signing out and back in, fully restarting the device, clearing the app’s cache or data, or reinstalling the app. Use the instructions for your own device rather than assuming every TV, phone, or streaming player has the same menus.

3. Try a wired connection if your equipment supports it
Max recommends a wired connection for supported devices and gives connecting a computer to the router with Ethernet as an example. Make sure the network cables are firmly connected. Ethernet is an optional test, not a universal fix: both the playback device and router need compatible ports. If they do, connect them with an Ethernet cable and compare playback with Wi-Fi.
Why does Max keep pausing or buffering only in a browser?
If Max works in its app or on another device but not in one browser, troubleshoot that browser before changing the whole network. Max’s browser guidance recommends:

- Use an updated, supported browser, or test another supported browser.
- Check browser settings, including whether third-party cookies are allowed.
- Temporarily disable ad-blocking software and extensions to see whether playback changes.
- Turn off private or incognito browsing.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, then restart the computer.
These are general troubleshooting options from Max’s support instructions; they do not establish that a particular browser extension caused your problem.

Only the TV app has trouble
If another supported device plays Max successfully on the same network, focus on the TV or streaming device: update its software and the Max app, restart it, and use the platform-specific Max instructions for any cache, data, sign-in, or reinstall steps. A successful test on another device makes a network-wide problem less likely, though it does not rule out a connection issue affecting only the TV’s location or Wi-Fi reception.

Several devices buffer on Wi-Fi
If multiple devices have trouble at once, reduce competing network activity and restart the modem and router. If the player and router support Ethernet, test a wired connection. Compare whether the problem is persistent or appears only at busy times; that pattern can help identify whether shared network use is involved.
It happens intermittently
Note when buffering starts and whether it coincides with other people using the network. Also compare Wi-Fi with cellular data on a mobile device, if available, or with Ethernet on a compatible player. A change between connection types can help isolate the network path, but it does not by itself identify a specific cause.
When the usual fixes do not work
Record which devices and playback surfaces fail, whether the connection is Wi-Fi, cellular, or Ethernet, and whether the issue is continuous or intermittent. Then follow the device-specific steps in Max’s general playback troubleshooting guide. The reviewed Max support guidance is general; it does not document a Lanterns-specific streaming defect.
