If a photo or video is stuck or fails in Google Messages, first check whether that conversation is using RCS or MMS. Then test whether the problem affects one recipient or every chat, check your internet connection and RCS status, and contact the carrier if service or account provisioning may be involved.
Check whether the conversation is using RCS or MMS
Look at the conversation’s composer or send status for an indication that it is an RCS chat or a text/MMS message. The wording can vary by Google Messages version. Google Messages supports photo and video sending over both routes, but they do not have the same requirements: RCS must be available for the participants, while MMS depends on carrier service.
Google’s RCS troubleshooting guide identifies carrier support as one possible factor. Its photo and video instructions cover media sending in Google Messages, and Android’s RCS overview explains that RCS must be available for the chat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind out whether it is one chat or every chat
Try sending a small photo in another conversation with someone whose RCS availability you know. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed diagnosis:

- It works in other chats: Focus on the affected conversation and whether RCS is available to that recipient. Check whether the chat can use SMS/MMS instead.
- It fails across chats: Check the phone’s internet connection, Google Messages, RCS status, and carrier service.
Check your connection, app, and RCS status
- Confirm the phone can access the internet. Try loading a webpage or using another internet-connected app.
- Update Google Messages, then reopen the conversation and check its RCS status. Google’s troubleshooting steps address sending, receiving, and connection problems, including cases where a carrier does not support RCS.
- If RCS is unavailable, check whether the conversation can send as SMS/MMS. If neither route works, the carrier may need to check service availability or provisioning for your line.
Try a smaller photo or shorter video
Send a smaller photo or a shorter, compressed video as a test. If that works, the problem may relate to transferring that particular file rather than a general inability to send media. Google’s public consumer instructions do not establish one universal maximum file size for RCS or MMS, so a limit should not be assumed to apply across carriers and message types.
Contact the support team that can address the problem
If the issue remains, use the pattern you found to direct the next check. Menus and remedies can differ by Android version, phone manufacturer, Google Messages version, and carrier.
