There is no single fix for every missing Google Maps feature. Start by identifying what is affected—your location dot, the app itself, offline navigation, Timeline, or a vehicle feature—then check the setting or support limit that applies to that symptom.
Start with the symptom
| What is missing or failing? | First checks |
|---|---|
| Blue dot is missing, gray, jumping, or inaccurate | Device location, Maps permission, location accuracy, connectivity, and calibration |
| Maps crashes or behaves incorrectly | Update the app; on Android, consider clearing its cache or storage |
| Offline map or directions are unavailable | Download the area while online and check the offline limitations |
| Timeline, saved places, or other personal features are missing | Check Incognito mode, app support, and Timeline requirements |
| A feature is missing in a car | Check whether it is built-in car Maps and whether the vehicle, region, language, and plan support it |
Menus and feature availability vary by platform, app version, region, language, account settings, and vehicle system. Follow the branch below that matches your device and symptom.
Fix a missing or inaccurate blue dot
Tap the location control in Maps. If the dot is gray or absent, Maps cannot currently determine the device’s location and may show its last known location. A broad blue circle around the dot means the location is uncertain. Google’s location accuracy troubleshooting explains these indicators and the checks below.
On Android
- Turn on the device’s Location setting, then open Android Settings and check Apps > Maps > Permissions > Location. Allow Maps to access location while you use the app; the exact menu wording can vary by manufacturer.
- Check Location Accuracy in Android’s location settings. App permission and Location Accuracy are separate controls. If Location Accuracy is off, the phone may rely more heavily on GPS and sensors, which can reduce precision. See Google’s Android location accuracy guidance and Location Accuracy settings help.
- Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is available, airplane mode is off, and battery saver is not restricting location updates.
- If Maps asks you to calibrate, follow its prompt. Compass calibration may ask you to move the phone in a figure-eight motion.
- If the location is still wrong, restart the phone and check again.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
- In Location Services, select Google Maps and allow location access while using the app. Enable Precise Location if it is available and you need a more exact position.
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, turn off Low Power Mode if it is interfering with updates, and follow any compass calibration prompt in Maps.
- Restart the device if the dot remains missing or inaccurate.
Buildings, garages, and other obstructions can weaken location signals. If Maps works outdoors but not inside a structure, the location environment may be the cause rather than an app fault.

In a computer browser
Allow location access both in the browser and for the Google Maps site, reload Maps, and verify the computer is connected to the internet. If it still cannot determine location, restart the computer. Browser and site permission controls differ by browser.
Fix crashes and general app problems
Update Maps first
Install the latest Maps update available for your device from its app store. Google recommends updating Maps when the Android app crashes or has other problems; see its Maps app troubleshooting steps.

Clear Android cache or storage only if needed
On Android, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage and choose Clear cache. If that does not help, Clear storage may be another option; menu names and locations differ among manufacturers. Clearing storage permanently deletes app data, so use it only after considering what you may lose.
Check Android support
Google says Android versions of Maps 11.39 and below no longer work. Google also says new Maps releases are not provided for Android 8.1 or lower after August 2025. Its current Maps requirements and outdated-version guidance lists Android 9.0 or newer and Maps 11.40 or newer for Android updates. If your device cannot update, Google suggests using Maps on the web; Maps Go may be an option on supported older Android devices. Availability and compatibility can change, so check Google’s requirements page for the current details.

Understand offline maps and directions
Offline Maps is for areas downloaded in advance, not a full replacement for an internet connection. Connect to the internet, sign in if prompted, and download the needed area before leaving coverage. On iPhone or iPad, Google specifies that you must not be in Incognito mode to download an area. Keep the entire route within the downloaded map area. See Google’s offline maps instructions for Android and iOS.
What will not work offline
- Offline driving navigation does not provide live traffic information or alternate driving routes.
- Offline transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable.
- Offline maps cannot be downloaded in some countries or regions.
If an offline feature is missing, check that the area was downloaded successfully and covers the full route. If you need live traffic, an alternate route, or a non-driving route, reconnect to the internet.

Restore Timeline, saved places, and personal features
Check Incognito mode
Incognito mode intentionally disables several Maps features, including Timeline, Offline Maps, saved places, notifications, and contributions. If one of these disappears, check whether Incognito mode is enabled and turn it off if you want those features. Google lists the affected features in its Incognito mode help.
Check Timeline support and device data
On Android, Google’s current Timeline requirements and transfer guidance says Maps version 11.106 or newer is required, and Timeline is not available on Android Go. Timeline data is device-based. To import it onto another device, backup must have been enabled; Google says a backup can take days to reflect changes. If the original device or its data is unavailable, the help guidance does not guarantee recovery.

Check missing features in a vehicle
First determine whether you are using Google Maps built into the car or Maps on a phone connected to the car. Built-in Maps features can vary by vehicle manufacturer, region, language, and data plan. Google’s built-in car Maps help also notes that offline map data supports some driver-assistance features. If the missing function is part of the vehicle’s built-in system, check the vehicle’s Maps availability and data-plan constraints rather than assuming phone app settings control it.
If the feature is still missing
- Confirm the exact platform and whether you are online; phone app, browser, and built-in car Maps do not have identical features.
- Check the relevant Google Help page for current device, app-version, region, and feature requirements.
- For a location problem, verify system location and Maps permission separately; on Android, also check Location Accuracy.
- For an app failure, update Maps before trying more disruptive fixes such as clearing Android storage.
- For an offline problem, verify the download covers the full area and account for the feature limits of offline use.
If the feature is unavailable for your Android version, region, account mode, or vehicle system, changing unrelated settings will not enable it.
