Geometry Dash is not officially blocked by Windows 11. Steam lists the game for Windows and gives minimum requirements of Windows XP, a 2.0+ GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, OpenGL 2.0 support, and 100 MB of storage; those legacy minimums do not mean newer Windows versions are unsupported.
When Geometry Dash does not work on Windows 11, common causes include damaged Steam files, outdated graphics drivers, fullscreen or DPI-scaling conflicts, a bad configuration file, or installed mods and injected DLLs. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with changes least likely to affect your saves.
Before troubleshooting: identify the failure
Note what happens when you click Play in Steam:
- Nothing opens.
- Steam briefly says the game is running, then returns to Play.
- You see a black or white screen.
- The game reaches the RobTop logo or main menu and then closes.
- The game starts but stutters, flickers, has distorted audio, or uses the wrong GPU.
- Your levels, settings, or progress appear to be missing.
The symptom helps determine which fix to try first. Do not delete the Geometry Dash data folder until you have made a backup.
1. Restart Steam and Windows
Close Geometry Dash and exit Steam from Steam > Exit, rather than only closing the Steam window. Restart Windows, open Steam again, and launch the game without any mod loader or third-party launcher.

If Steam says the game is running but no window appears, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. End any remaining GeometryDash.exe process, restart Steam, and test again.
2. Remove mods and injected files temporarily
Modified files can cause crashes after a Geometry Dash, Windows, or graphics-driver update. Temporarily disable or remove Geode or Mega Hack components, FPS-unlock tools, texture packs, DLL injectors, patched executables, and third-party launchers.
Do not permanently delete anything you may want to restore. Move nonstandard files to a temporary folder outside the Geometry Dash installation directory. Test the unmodified Steam version before reinstalling or updating your mods.
3. Verify the Steam installation
Steam can replace missing or damaged official game files. In the current Steam interface:
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click Geometry Dash and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then launch Geometry Dash.
Older guides call this tab Local Files and the button Verify Integrity of Game Files. The wording has changed, but the function is the same.
Verification may overwrite modified game files, including texture packs or patched executables. It normally does not delete cloud-synchronized progress, but back up local data first if your saves are important.

4. Run the Windows compatibility troubleshooter
Microsoft says Windows updates can expose application incompatibilities involving operating-system architecture, security features, or system requirements. Microsoft does not identify Geometry Dash as specifically incompatible with Windows 11, but its general troubleshooter is appropriate for an older game.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Choose Geometry Dash when prompted and apply any recommended settings.
- Test the game, then keep or discard the suggested configuration based on the result.
Avoid selecting random compatibility modes from old forum guides. “Windows 95 compatibility mode” comes from an August 2018 community discussion and is not a confirmed Windows 11 fix.

Use the executable rather than the Steam shortcut:
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Geometry Dash > Manage > Browse local files.
- Right-click GeometryDash.exe and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
Try the following settings one at a time so you know which change helped:
Disable fullscreen optimizations
Enable Disable fullscreen optimizations, select Apply, and launch the game. This is worth trying when startup produces a black screen or fails on a high-refresh-rate, high-resolution, or scaled display.
Run as administrator
Enable Run this program as an administrator only as a troubleshooting test. If it makes no difference, turn it back off. Running games with elevated permissions is not normally necessary and can create permission differences between the game and Steam.
Correct high-DPI scaling
If the game opens to a black screen or behaves incorrectly with Windows display scaling, select Change high DPI settings > Override high DPI scaling behavior > Application > OK > Apply.

This is a display-scaling workaround, not a Geometry Dash-specific Microsoft fix. If it makes the image worse, return the override to its previous setting.
6. Try a windowed launch
Fullscreen initialization can fail even when the game is installed correctly. In Steam, open Library > right-click Geometry Dash > Properties > General > Launch Options.
Enter -windowed. If it has no effect, remove it and test -window.
These launch options are commonly reported workarounds, but they are not documented as guaranteed options on Geometry Dash’s official Steam support page and may not work with every build.
7. Update graphics drivers through Windows Update
If Geometry Dash opens but flickers, becomes unresponsive, displays visual glitches, or stutters severely, update the graphics driver. Microsoft recommends updating device drivers through Windows Update after using the compatibility troubleshooter.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Install any available display or graphics-driver update.
- Restart Windows and test Geometry Dash.
If you have both integrated and dedicated graphics, Windows may be assigning the game to the wrong GPU.

8. Choose the GPU Geometry Dash should use
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select Browse.
- Go to the Geometry Dash installation folder and select GeometryDash.exe. You can reach it from Steam through Manage > Browse local files.
- Select the added game in the graphics list and choose Options.
- Choose High performance or Power saving.
- Select Save, then relaunch the game.
Use High performance when the dedicated GPU is working correctly. If that causes crashes or the laptop runs hot, test Power saving, which usually selects integrated graphics.
9. Test the local save and configuration files safely
If Geometry Dash crashes after the logo or main menu, or suddenly shows missing settings and progress, a corrupted local file may be involved. The commonly reported local-data folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\GeometryDash.
To open the relevant parent folder, press Win + R, enter %LocalAppData%, then open the GeometryDash folder. Do not confuse this with %AppData%, which opens AppData\Roaming rather than the required Local folder.
Before changing anything:
- Close Geometry Dash and Steam.
- Copy the entire GeometryDash folder to your Desktop or an external backup location.
- Only after making the backup, move suspected .dat or .bak files to a temporary folder.
- Launch the game to see whether it starts with fresh configuration data.
This test can make Geometry Dash appear reset. Unsynchronized progress may be lost if files are replaced or deleted, so restore the backup if the test does not help.

Windows 11 itself is normally not the problem here. Standard Windows 11 installations are 64-bit, and Steam has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. Steam stopped supporting 32-bit versions of Windows on January 1, 2026; Windows 10 64-bit remains supported, and future Steam clients require 64-bit Windows.
To check your Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and look at System type. If the PC is running a 32-bit edition, the Steam client requirement—not a special Geometry Dash Windows 11 restriction—is likely to be the limiting factor.

11. Reinstall only after backing up
If the unmodified game still will not launch after verification and compatibility tests, back up the local Geometry Dash folder first. Then uninstall Geometry Dash from Steam, restart Windows, and install it again.
A reinstall is most useful when the executable or installation directory remains damaged after verification. It is less likely to help when the actual cause is a graphics driver, display-scaling conflict, mod, or corrupted save file.

FAQ
Is Geometry Dash compatible with Windows 11?
There is no verified official evidence that Windows 11 itself blocks Geometry Dash. Steam lists the game for Windows, and Windows 11 meets Steam’s client requirement of Windows 10 or later. Compatibility problems are more likely to involve files, drivers, display settings, or modifications.
Why does Geometry Dash open and then immediately close?
Start by removing Geode or Mega Hack components, DLL injectors, texture packs, patched executables, and FPS tools. Then use Steam’s current verification path: Library > right-click Geometry Dash > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

Should I use Windows 95 compatibility mode for Geometry Dash?
Not as a first-line fix. That suggestion comes from an old August 2018 community discussion and is not an official Windows 11 or Geometry Dash recommendation. Use the current Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and targeted fullscreen or DPI settings instead.
Will verifying Geometry Dash files delete my progress?
Verification replaces modified or damaged installation files. It should not normally remove save data, but it can overwrite mods and injected game files. Back up %LocalAppData%\GeometryDash before troubleshooting if your local progress is important.
