If your Galaxy S21 buttons are hard to press with an OtterBox case on, remove the case and test the buttons first. If they work normally without it, check the case model, fit, cleanliness, and condition. If they remain difficult to press bare, use Samsung’s diagnostics and support path instead of altering the case.
1. Test the buttons with the case removed
- Take the OtterBox case off the phone.
- Press each affected button directly on the phone and note whether it works normally.
Samsung advises checking for a case, dust, or other foreign material that may interfere with button operation before moving on to diagnostics. Its guide was updated August 21, 2026: Samsung: What to do when the buttons appear not to be working on your Galaxy device.
2. If the buttons work without the case, check the fit
Confirm the case is for the standard Galaxy S21 5G
Check the phone and case labels. The Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, and S21 FE are separate models, so a case for one should not be assumed to fit another. OtterBox lists a Symmetry Series case specifically for the standard Galaxy S21 5G: OtterBox Symmetry Series for Galaxy S21 5G.

Look for dust or other debris around the button covers, damage to the case, or a cover that is not naturally aligned over the phone’s button. Remove and refit the case without forcing the covers. OtterBox describes its cases as precision-fit and provides model-specific instructions: OtterBox case instructions.

Clean the case only if needed
OtterBox’s general care guidance permits cleaning cases with mild soap and water, followed by air-drying or light drying with a paper towel. Let the case dry fully before putting it back on the phone. See OtterBox FAQs: Cases, Warranty, Returns & Support.
Test again, then contact OtterBox if the problem returns
After reseating the dry case, test the buttons again. If the buttons work bare but remain obstructed only with this case, contact OtterBox and provide the exact phone model and case series to ask about support, returns, or warranty options. Use the OtterBox customer support contact form.
3. If the buttons are still difficult without the case
A case is less likely to be the cause if the buttons remain hard to press on the bare phone. Check for software updates and run the Samsung Members diagnostics described in Samsung’s button troubleshooting guide. If the physical problem persists, contact Samsung or a qualified repair provider.

What not to do
- Do not cut, heat, or reshape the case’s button covers.
- Do not apply lubricant to the buttons or case.
- Do not open the phone as part of this troubleshooting process.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal button-cover adjustment or a repair procedure for this exact phone-and-case combination. Samsung notes that screenshots, menu names, and settings can vary by model and software version.
When replacing the case makes sense
Consider a replacement only if the case is damaged, is made for a different phone model, or continues to obstruct the buttons after correct refitting. Choose one labeled for the exact Galaxy S21 model and consider button access alongside your preferred bulk and protection level. OtterBox lists a Symmetry Series case for the standard Galaxy S21 5G, but current price, stock, and Amazon availability are not established here.
