FiveM’s generic connection failure does not identify one cause or have one universal fix. First test whether you can join another server, then capture the complete error and compare joining through the server browser with a direct connection; the results help show whether to investigate your client or contact the server owner.
Use the checks below to narrow the problem down. Cfx.re documentation identifies server reachability, network symptoms, and server support notices as useful evidence, but the generic phrase alone does not establish the cause.
1. Check whether one server or several are affected
- Try joining another known server.
- Note the exact error shown when the join fails.
- Record the server name or address and whether the failure happens with one server or several.
If only one server fails, ask its owner to confirm the current address and server status. Avoid changing unrelated client settings before checking that server. If several servers fail, collect network evidence using the F8 console as described below.
2. Try connecting directly from the F8 console
Cfx.re documents the connect command for joining by IP address and port or by URL. Comparing direct connect with the server browser can help identify a reachability or listing issue.

- Open FiveM and press F8 to open the client console.
- Enter the server’s current address in this format, using the port provided by its owner:
connect IP:Port
- You can also use an accepted server URL if one is provided.
- Record whether direct connect succeeds and the full error if it fails.
If direct connection to the server fails, Cfx.re identifies incorrect port forwarding or a firewall blocking connections as likely explanations in its server-reachability guidance. This is a clue for the server owner to investigate, not proof that every failed join is caused by a firewall.
3. Check network indicators if several servers fail
FiveM’s console includes commands that display network metrics. Use them to document what you observe; ping or packet loss alone does not prove that a particular router, ISP, or device is responsible.

cl_drawperf trueto display ping and packet-loss information. - Enter
netgraph trueto display network metrics. - Note the visible symptoms along with which servers fail, then share that information with the relevant server owner or network administrator.
4. Check for an EOS or EOL warning
Look for a server support notice in the server listing or when you try to join. Cfx.re distinguishes end of support (EOS) from end of life (EOL): a gray EOS warning still allows joining, while a red EOL warning means the server owner needs to update the server artifacts if the connection fails.
Players cannot update another person’s server artifacts. If you see a red EOL warning and cannot connect, send the server owner the warning and the full error message.

5. Match client-specific advice to the exact error
Do not treat antivirus as a universal fix for a generic connection failure. Cfx.re’s client-issues guidance mentions antivirus vendors in the specific case of an ROS entitlement-token error and directs users to submit a support ticket. If that is the exact error you see, follow the guidance for that error rather than disabling security protection broadly.
6. Send a useful report
When contacting a server owner, include:
- The full error message.
- The server name and address you tried.
- Whether other servers work.
- Whether joining through F8 direct connect behaves differently from the server browser.
- Any visible ping or packet-loss symptoms.
- Any EOS or EOL notice.
For a client-specific documented error, follow the support route named in Cfx.re’s client guidance. A report with the exact error and these checks is more useful than saying only that FiveM will not connect.

Why does FiveM say connection failed?
The generic phrase does not identify a single cause. The failure may involve the chosen server’s reachability or configuration, a client or network path issue, or a server support condition. Capture the complete message and check whether other servers work.
What should I do if only one FiveM server fails?
Check that server’s current address and status with its owner. Try a direct connection from the F8 console and share the result and complete error with the owner.

What does a red EOL warning mean?
Cfx.re says a red end-of-life warning followed by a connection failure requires the server owner to update the server artifacts. Contact the owner; changing your client cannot update their server.
Can I use F8 to check FiveM network symptoms?
Yes. Cfx.re documents cl_drawperf true for displaying ping and packet loss, and netgraph true for network metrics. These commands provide evidence to report, not a diagnosis of which network device or provider is at fault.
Should I disable antivirus to fix a FiveM connection error?
Not as a general connection fix. Cfx.re’s antivirus note applies to the specific ROS entitlement-token error. Match any security-software troubleshooting to the exact error and the documented guidance.
