Check them in that order. A valid playlist does not guarantee compatible inputs, and a successful join does not guarantee YouTube will accept the live ingest.
1. Fix playlist parsing and file-path errors
The concat demuxer reads a text playlist, with one directive per line. For automatic format detection, its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0—with no leading spaces or byte-order mark.

file 'part-02.mp4'Save the file as plain text, for example playlist.ffconcat. The file paths are resolved from the working directory unless you provide paths that point elsewhere. Check spelling, capitalization where the filesystem distinguishes it, and whether every file is readable.
Quote paths and understand the safe option
Paths containing spaces or special characters must be quoted or escaped according to FFmpeg’s playlist syntax. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. If the error specifically concerns an unsafe path, you can disable that check for files and paths you trust.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat [output options] output.mp4Use -safe 0 only with a playlist you control: it allows any file name, rather than applying the default safe-path restrictions. It is not a fix for missing files, malformed quoting, or incompatible media. If all paths satisfy the safe-path rules, you can omit it.
FFmpeg options are position-sensitive: put input options such as -f concat and -safe 0 before the relevant -i. If your installed version may behave differently from the rolling online documentation, check its local options with ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

2. Check whether the input files can be concatenated
The concat demuxer is a virtual, packet-level join; it does not normalize files into a common format. FFmpeg requires the input files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. If they do not, a playlist that parses can still fail or produce broken output.
Compare streams with ffprobe
Probe each file and compare the number and type of streams, codec, time base, dimensions, frame rate, and duration. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json part-01.mp4Run the same command on the other files and compare the results. These fields help reveal mismatches; matching them is not a guarantee that every concat will succeed. Test a short playlist and inspect FFmpeg’s stream mapping and timestamps before building a long-running stream.
Choose the demuxer or filter based on the inputs
- Use the concat demuxer when the streams are compatible and avoiding re-encoding matters.
- Use the concat filter when the inputs need re-encoding or normalization and re-encoding is acceptable. FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies the filter as the approach for concatenation when you need to re-encode.
- Do not treat the concat protocol as a universal playlist substitute. It is a separate, format-dependent file-level approach, not a general solution for arbitrary MP4 playlists.
The demuxer’s auto_convert option is enabled by default, but its documented conversion is limited. In relevant cases, including resolution changes, FFmpeg currently adds the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter. It does not make unlike codecs or arbitrary stream layouts compatible. 3. Diagnose gaps, freezes, and timestamp errors
The demuxer adjusts timestamps across the files in sequence. Each file’s duration determines the start time of the next one, so inaccurate duration information can cause gaps, freezes, or other artifacts. A truncated file or bad duration inferred from the media can also disrupt the timeline.
Inspect duration and timestamps
First check whether the reported duration is credible and whether the file is complete. If the duration is wrong, the playlist’s duration directive can override the stored value; use it only when you have a defensible duration. An incorrect override can shift later files just as surely as an incorrect stored duration.

For a non-monotonic DTS or similar timestamp error, do not assume that changing the playlist header or adding -safe 0 will help. Those address playlist recognition and path safety, not timestamp continuity. Check the input streams and durations, test a shorter sequence, and consider the concat filter with re-encoding if the demuxer cannot join the files reliably.
4. Check YouTube ingest only after the output is sound
YouTube ingest is a downstream stage. Once FFmpeg can read the playlist and generate coherent output, check the outgoing encoder settings against YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. The settings below do not repair a malformed playlist or incompatible inputs.
Video, audio, bitrate, and keyframes
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS.
- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1, at up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- H.264 bitrate examples: YouTube’s current live-streaming table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees; consult the current table for other resolutions and frame rates.
Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the local output plays correctly but YouTube reports an ingest problem, investigate encoder settings and network stability separately from the concat playlist.
5. Troubleshoot in a reliable order
- Record the failure: Save the complete FFmpeg command, full error output,
ffmpeg -version, and playlist text. Redact your YouTube stream key before sharing logs. - Verify playlist recognition: Use the exact first-line header when relying on auto-detection, or specify
-f concatbefore the playlist’s-i. - Verify paths: Confirm every referenced file exists and is readable. Quote or escape paths; use
-safe 0only if safe-path rejection is the issue and you trust every referenced path. - Compare the media: Probe each file and check that its streams meet the demuxer’s matching-stream requirements.
- Investigate the timeline: If you see gaps, freezes, or discontinuities, check file durations and timestamps. Use a
durationdirective only with a reliable value. - Change method if needed: If the inputs need normalization, test the concat filter and re-encode instead of expecting the demuxer to do it.
- Validate the live output: After the generated output is sound, check YouTube’s ingest settings, test the stream, and monitor stream health.
