Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Failed to mount /system (Invalid argument)” means TWRP could not mount the target it identifies as /system; the message alone does not prove the filesystem is corrupt. The right next step depends on your exact phone model and partition layout, Android or ROM build, and TWRP version. Avoid generic formatting or wiping until you have checked those details and the recovery log.
What the error means
TWRP attempted to mount /system and failed. “Invalid argument” describes the failed operation, not its root cause. A recovery/device mismatch, filesystem expectations, dynamic partitions, or A/B slot state may be relevant possibilities, but the error by itself cannot identify which applies to your phone.
Partition layout is especially important on newer Android devices. Android’s Dynamic partitions documentation, last updated June 17, 2026, describes a userspace partitioning system in which a super partition contains logical partitions such as system, vendor, and product. On a device using that design, /system may not correspond to a traditional standalone block partition. A repair intended for a conventional partition can therefore be inappropriate.
Identify your device and partition setup first

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Manufacturer, exact model number, and device codename. Similar product names can refer to different hardware and partition layouts.
- Android version and the exact ROM build currently installed or being installed.
- TWRP version and build, including whether it is intended for your exact device.
- Whether the device uses A/B slots or dynamic partitions, if known.
- The complete TWRP recovery log and the names of any other mount operations that fail.
Do not infer partition behavior from the Android version or a similar model’s instructions. Check the device-specific documentation and ROM maintainer’s instructions for the exact variant.
Use the recovery log and device-specific guidance
Check the recovery log to see which mount operations failed and whether the issue is limited to /system. Then verify whether a TWRP build for your exact model is available and read its installation notes. TeamWin’s official FAQ links to supported-device information and covers recovery topics including sideloading, encryption, and super-device functions.

If the recovery is not explicitly compatible with your device and Android generation, do not use its repair options as a test. A recovery that cannot correctly interpret the device’s layout can report mount errors even when a generic filesystem repair is not the answer.

| Route | When it may fit | Risk and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect the log and verify recovery compatibility | As the first diagnostic step for any device. | Read-only checks do not repair a partition, but help avoid applying an unsuitable fix. |
| TWRP Repair File System | Only if a known-good compatible recovery exposes a conventional filesystem partition and the device-specific instructions call for repair. | Not a guaranteed fix. The option does not establish that filesystem corruption caused the mount failure. |
| Filesystem change or format | Only when the exact device instructions prescribe it for the identified partition and filesystem. | Can erase data or make the device unbootable. Do not switch a filesystem or format a logical partition simply because TWRP offers the control. |
| ROM installation or firmware restore | Use the ROM maintainer’s prescribed route for the exact device and partition scheme. | Wrong images or partition operations can erase data or leave the phone unbootable. Dynamic partitions require layout-aware handling. |
TWRP’s Repair File System feature and switching a filesystem away and back are sometimes described as possible approaches, but neither is a universal fix. They only make sense when the actual partition type and device-specific procedure support them.
Install the ROM using its prescribed route
If the mount failure appeared while installing a ROM, follow that ROM’s instructions for your exact phone variant. Confirm that the package and recovery steps match the device’s partition scheme. Android’s dynamic-partition design means logical partitions inside super require layout-aware handling; a command intended for a traditional standalone system partition may be the wrong operation.

Do not substitute instructions from another model, an older Android release, or a guide that assumes a different partition layout. If the maintainer’s steps do not clearly cover your recovery and device combination, stop and seek clarification before flashing.

Wiping partitions, formatting system, or flashing stock firmware can destroy data or prevent the phone from booting if the image or target partition is wrong. A 2021 generic guide includes commands such as fastboot format system; that is not a safe universal recommendation, especially for devices with logical partitions. Do not run it merely because TWRP reports this mount error.

- Back up any data you can still access.
- Verify the exact device model/codename, firmware or ROM build, and partition instructions from the device or ROM maintainer.
- Confirm that every image and command is intended for that device and layout.
- Proceed with a destructive operation only if the device-specific instructions call for it and you understand what it will erase.
If the error persists
Stop before trying another format or wipe. Preserve the recovery log and share the exact model/codename, Android or ROM build, TWRP build, and the steps that led to the error when asking for device-specific help. Those details are necessary to distinguish a recovery mismatch from a partition-layout or filesystem issue; the error text alone cannot select a safe repair command.
