For terminal-driven CSV conversions in LibreOffice Calc, explicitly set the character set, field separator, text delimiter, import locale, and date-column format. Most garbled characters, merged or split columns, and misread dates trace back to one of those choices. The filter syntax described here is LibreOffice-specific; check your installed version’s help before using a filter string in a production command.
Make the conversion reproducible
Record the input and output filenames, the command you ran, the installed LibreOffice version, and the CSV options. LibreOffice’s CSV filter documentation describes options embedded in the conversion filter specification, including the field separator, text delimiter, character set, starting row for import, and per-column formatting.
Use the documentation for your installed version to verify the filter syntax and token positions. Do not assume a filter string documented for LibreOffice applies to another spreadsheet application.
Fix encoding errors and garbled characters
A mismatch between the file’s actual character encoding and the character set selected for import or export is a primary setting to investigate when accented or other non-ASCII characters appear corrupted. Identify the source encoding from the system that produced the file or from a trusted file specification, then set it explicitly. Set the intended output character set explicitly as well; LibreOffice’s filter documentation includes a Windows-1252 export example.

- Check the source system or file specification for the input encoding.
- Set that character set in the CSV import options rather than relying on an inherited or assumed setting.
- Choose the intended character set for export in the filter options.
- Inspect output rows containing accented letters or other characters outside basic ASCII and compare them with known expected text.
A filename extension does not establish a file’s encoding. If the encoding is unknown, the available LibreOffice documentation does not describe a universal detection procedure. Compare candidate encodings against known expected text and, where possible, confirm the encoding with the file producer.
Fix delimiter errors and incorrect column counts
CSV is delimited text, not necessarily comma-separated text. A file may use commas, semicolons, tabs, or another character to separate fields. The field separator divides columns; the text delimiter encloses text values. Keep these settings distinct when configuring the import or export filter.

Inspect a raw input line to identify the separator and quoting convention. A value that contains the separator must be enclosed in the text delimiter so that the separator inside the value is not treated as a column break. LibreOffice explains that these import settings divide text into columns in its CSV import and export help.
- Look at a representative raw line, including a line with quoted text if one exists.
- Set the field separator to the character actually used between fields.
- Set the text delimiter to the character used to enclose text values.
- For import problems, enable filter settings and review the import preview to confirm the resulting columns before accepting the conversion.
If the preview produces too many columns, check whether a value containing a separator is properly quoted and whether the text delimiter matches the file. If fields run together, check that the selected separator matches the raw line.

Fix misread dates and numbers
Set the import language or locale deliberately: Calc uses it to interpret numeric strings. For date columns, specify the intended date format where possible. The Calc guide documents date-order choices including DMY, MDY, and YMD; the correct choice depends on the source data’s convention.
- Identify the producer’s locale and date convention, if known.
- Set the import language or locale to match how the values were written.
- Choose the date column’s format explicitly, such as DMY, MDY, or YMD, rather than leaving an ambiguous order to automatic interpretation.
- Check converted dates against known examples, especially values that could plausibly be read in more than one order.
A value such as a date with both its day and month at or below 12 may not reveal its intended order from the text alone. Confirm the producer’s convention; until it is known, preserve ambiguous values as text. Treat automatic conversion as suspect if dates land in the wrong month or year. Check what CSV export preserves
CSV is a text interchange format, not a full spreadsheet document. LibreOffice states that export saves only the current sheet and omits formulas and formatting. If the recipient needs multiple sheets, formulas, or presentation formatting, keep the file in a spreadsheet format instead of relying on CSV.

Review the settings before rerunning
Before converting again, compare the file’s actual characteristics with the settings you chose:
