Error 0x800f0906 means DISM could not obtain the component files it needs to repair Windows. First retry DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated Command Prompt. If Windows Update cannot supply the files, use a legitimate, matching Windows installation source and specify it with /Source and /LimitAccess. Finish with sfc /scannow.
This procedure applies to installed Windows 10 and legacy Windows 8.1 systems. Windows 8.1 reached end of support on January 10, 2023, and Windows 10 free support ended on October 14, 2025; repairing an existing installation does not restore normal free security support.
What Error 0x800f0906 means
DISM repairs the running Windows image by replacing damaged or missing component-store files. Microsoft identifies 0x800f0906 as CBS_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE: the required content could not be downloaded or located. Windows Update is the default source for an online image, but a proxy, firewall, VPN, security product, damaged update components, WSUS policy, or an incompatible repair source can prevent access.

Microsoft’s servicing guidance is documented in its Windows Update and component-repair article.
Before you begin
- Sign in with an administrator account and open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Back up important files before servicing or performing recovery operations.
- Confirm the target Windows version, edition, language, and CPU architecture.
- Use Microsoft or authorized installation media only. Do not download replacement DLLs or unofficial ISO images.
- On a company-managed computer, ask IT before changing WSUS, Group Policy, proxy, or update settings.
Fix 1: Retry DISM through Windows Update
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM can remain at one percentage for several minutes. Do not interrupt it solely because the displayed progress has paused. A successful repair ends with:
The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.
When DISM finishes successfully, run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow
Restart Windows afterward. If DISM immediately or repeatedly returns 0x800f0906, stop rerunning the same command and check the source and update path.
Check the component store before choosing another source
These commands inspect the online image:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
/CheckHealthquickly checks whether Windows has already recorded component-store corruption./ScanHealthperforms a more extensive scan./RestoreHealthscans and attempts repair, requiring a source of replacement files.
These image operations are available for online images beginning with Windows 8, as documented in Microsoft’s Repair-WindowsImage documentation.
Fix 2: Remove common Windows Update obstacles
Personal computers
- Verify that ordinary web access works.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or restrictive proxy, if doing so is safe.
- Check that Windows Update is not paused indefinitely.
- Verify the system date, time, and time zone.
- Retry the normal DISM command without
/LimitAccesswhen you want Windows Update to provide the files.
Managed computers
WSUS or Group Policy may intentionally prevent direct access to Microsoft Update or require a particular repair share. The relevant policy is generally Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair. Microsoft explains these repair-source policies in its Windows repair-source guidance. Do not override a domain policy without administrator approval.
Fix 3: Use a matching Windows ISO or installation source
1. Obtain legitimate media
For Windows 10, Microsoft’s download pages currently provide version 22H2 media:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Select the same language and edition as the installed system. Windows 8.1 is unsupported, and Microsoft’s current public download availability is not equivalent to the Windows 10 ISO page. If you lack original 8.1 media, use authorized OEM, volume-licensing, recovery, or other legitimate Microsoft-provided media; do not use unofficial mirrors.
2. Mount the ISO and identify its file
In File Explorer, double-click the ISO. Note its drive letter, such as D:. Check for either:
D:sourcesinstall.wim
D:sourcesinstall.esd
3. Find the correct image index
For a WIM file, list the editions it contains:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.wim
Choose the index matching the installed Home, Pro, Enterprise, or other edition. Never assume index 1. Also match the Windows generation, language, architecture, and a compatible servicing level. An ISO that is merely labeled “Windows 10” may still be too old, too new, or otherwise incompatible with the target image.
4. Run DISM against the WIM
Replace <INDEX> with the matching number:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:sourcesinstall.wim:<INDEX> /LimitAccess
Example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:sourcesinstall.wim:6 /LimitAccess
/Onlinetargets the currently running Windows installation./Cleanup-Imageselects component-store servicing./RestoreHealthrepairs detected corruption./Sourcesupplies known-good files from the mounted media./LimitAccessprevents fallback to Windows Update.
If the media contains install.esd, use the file and source syntax supported by that media, for example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.esd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:D:sourcesinstall.esd:<INDEX> /LimitAccess
An ESD may use different indexes, so inspect it rather than copying the WIM example unchanged.
Fix 4: Use a known-good Windows installation on the network
Microsoft gives this pattern for a compatible network installation:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\SERVERc$Windows /LimitAccess
Replace SERVER with the computer name and ensure the source computer runs the same operating-system version. A local mounted Windows directory can also be specified:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:Windows /LimitAccess
Pointing to an arbitrary Windows folder is not sufficient. The source must contain the required component files and be compatible with the target.

If DISM changes to 0x800f081f
0x800f081f usually means the download problem was bypassed, but DISM still cannot find compatible files. Check that:
- the source path and filename are correct;
- you selected the right WIM or ESD index;
- the edition, language, architecture, and Windows generation match;
- the source is not older than the target’s required component level;
- the media actually contains the feature or package being repaired.
Microsoft warns that a target may require files newer than those on the source and recommends an appropriately patched repair source. Community reports describe this common progression, but they are troubleshooting examples rather than product documentation: Microsoft Q&A example 1 and Microsoft Q&A example 2.
Review DISM and CBS logs
Important servicing logs are stored at:
%windir%LogsDISMdism.log
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
On a typical installation these are C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log and C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Search for phrases such as source files could not be found, cannot repair member file, CBS, and the affected package or component identity. Do not edit the component store manually based on a single log line.
To extract SFC-related entries for review, Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting material uses:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
What to do when DISM and SFC still fail
- Perform an in-place repair installation with matching Windows media, preserving files and applications where the edition and installation path allow it.
- Use Windows Recovery options or System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Back up data and perform a clean installation when the installation is too damaged to service.
- Run storage and hardware diagnostics if corruption repeatedly returns; recurring file damage can indicate disk or memory problems.
Do not treat a full Windows Update reset, registry edits, or third-party “repair” utilities as universal solutions. They can alter update history, managed configuration, or system state without fixing an incompatible source.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fix 0x800f0906 without an ISO?
Yes. If Windows Update is reachable and correctly configured, the standard RestoreHealth command can obtain the files automatically. A local or network source is needed when that download path is unavailable or blocked.
Can I use Windows 10 media to repair Windows 8.1?
No. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are different operating-system generations. Use matching 8.1 media or choose an appropriate recovery or reinstall path.
Should I run SFC before DISM?
For this failure, use DISM first and then sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store that SFC relies on for replacement files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is 0x800f0906 a virus?
No. The code identifies a failure to obtain servicing content. Malware scanning can be a separate precaution, but the error alone does not establish an infection.
Does this procedure apply to Windows 11?
The DISM concepts and commands also apply to supported Windows versions, but this article’s media examples and support warning concern Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. Always use media matching the installed Windows release.
Why does DISM appear to stop at a percentage?
Component servicing can spend several minutes processing one stage. Leave the command running unless it has clearly failed or returned an error.
