First confirm which GPU the game is using, compare it with that game’s own requirements, and update its graphics driver and Windows. Remove -dx12 or -d3d12 only if the game supports another graphics mode; the error alone is not a reason to buy a new graphics card.
What the DirectX 12 error means
The message can appear when the game’s selected rendering mode is not supported by the current setup, when the GPU lacks a feature the game requires, or when the graphics driver or Windows environment is incompatible or out of date. The wording by itself cannot distinguish among these causes.
Seeing “DirectX 12” in Windows does not prove that a particular game can run on the active GPU. Microsoft explains that “A feature level is a well-defined set of GPU functionality” in its Direct3D feature levels documentation. A game may require a GPU capability or minimum model beyond what the system’s displayed DirectX version tells you.
For example, a May 22, 2024 Microsoft Q&A exchange about Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II said the questioner’s reported Intel Iris Xe was below that game’s minimum requirements despite supporting DirectX 12. That example applies to that game and configuration; it does not establish requirements for another title or every Iris Xe system. See the Microsoft Q&A exchange.

Check the game and GPU before changing anything
- Record the exact game and error. Capture the full message and note whether it started after a game, Windows, or driver update. The game title matters because requirements and available renderers vary.
- Identify the GPU the game is using. Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, or check the GPU maker’s control panel. On laptops and other dual-GPU computers, confirm whether the game is using integrated graphics or a discrete GPU. If needed, use Windows Graphics settings or the manufacturer’s current instructions to select the intended high-performance GPU.
- Compare that GPU with the game publisher’s requirements. Look up the exact model and any stated Direct3D feature-level requirement. Do not rely on the “DirectX Version” field in
dxdiagalone: it does not show that the active GPU meets every requirement of the game.
Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 overview describes the platform’s dependence on compatible GPU hardware and display drivers supporting WDDM 2.0. Those general requirements still do not tell you what an unnamed game requires; check the game publisher’s specifications.
Update the graphics driver and Windows
Install an available graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer or, for a laptop or prebuilt PC, the computer manufacturer. Also install available Windows updates, restart, and try launching again with the intended GPU selected. A driver update may help if the current driver is the problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every instance of this error.

When to remove -dx12 or -d3d12
If you or the launcher added -dx12 or -d3d12 to the game’s launch options, removing it is a reasonable test only when the game officially supports another rendering mode. The message suggests trying without the flag; it does not promise that the game has a fallback. Some titles require Direct3D 12 and cannot launch through a different renderer.
Check the game’s official support guidance before changing launch options. If no alternate mode is documented, removing the flag may make no difference or prevent the game from starting; restore the original option if necessary.

Decide whether hardware is actually the problem
Consider replacing or adding a graphics card only after checking that the GPU the game uses cannot meet the title’s published requirements. If a different renderer is available, compare its official support status, GPU feature requirements, and compatibility with your driver and Windows build. If you do need a new graphics card, verify the exact model against the game’s minimum and recommended specifications, as well as your computer’s power supply and physical clearance.
Do not choose a renderer or graphics card based only on this error text. The game, active GPU, and published requirements determine whether either change is appropriate.
