That is a documented workaround for this specific display condition, not a universal fix. For other launch errors or crashes, first identify when the failure happens, then use Steam’s basic file-checking and support options.
First, confirm which game and failure you have
This guide is for Dementium II HD, the Steam PC release from December 17, 2013—not the original Nintendo DS game. Steam’s listed minimum requirements are Windows XP/Vista/7, a Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz or AMD Athlon II X2 245e, 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 8800GT or Radeon HD 5700, DirectX 9.0c, and 4 GB of storage. These are historical store requirements, not a guarantee that the game will work on a particular current PC. Steam’s separate note that its client supports Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024 concerns the client, not a new compatibility guarantee for this game. Steam lists the game and its support route here; the published requirements are historical.
Before changing settings, note whether the game fails before a window appears, stays black after launch, crashes after reaching the menu, or fails during a repeatable gameplay transition. Also note the resolution and whether the game is in exclusive fullscreen. These details help distinguish a display-mode issue from a different crash; a black screen by itself does not identify the cause.
Fix a black screen tied to high-resolution exclusive fullscreen
PCGamingWiki documents a limitation in which the game cannot run in exclusive fullscreen at resolutions above 2560×1440. Its documented workaround is to launch in windowed mode using -popupwindow. Treat this as a targeted workaround, not a guaranteed fix for all black screens. PCGamingWiki’s Dementium II HD page describes the display workaround.

- Check whether you are using exclusive fullscreen above 2560×1440. If not, this documented limitation may not explain the problem.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Dementium II HD, choose Properties, and enter
-popupwindowin Launch Options. - Launch the game. If it becomes visible, use the in-game display settings to test a suitable resolution and window mode.
- If nothing changes, remove
-popupwindowand continue with the general checks below; the documentation does not claim that this option fixes unrelated crashes.
PCGamingWiki also describes editing DII_settings.db for ultrawide resolutions. That is a more advanced configuration change and is not the first step for a standard-resolution launch problem.
Use Steam’s general checks for other launch errors
If the high-resolution fullscreen condition does not fit, try basic diagnostics. These are general Steam troubleshooting steps; the available documentation does not establish them as Dementium II HD-specific fixes.

- Exit and restart Steam, then restart the PC.
- In Steam Library, right-click Dementium II HD and open Properties. Go to Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to finish, then try launching again.
- Record the exact point of failure: before any window appears, at a black screen, after the menu, or during a repeatable gameplay transition. Include the display resolution, window mode, Windows version, GPU and driver, and any launch options you tried.
- If the game reaches its main menu, note the version shown there. Include the exact error text, if any, when contacting support.
What the historical patch notes can—and cannot—tell you
A developer-pinned Steam community thread records that a December 20, 2013 patch addressed display settings that did not apply or reverted, as well as a performance issue in the hotel. Notes for version 1.266, posted January 7, 2014, added Alt+Enter windowed mode and fixes for 2560×1200 resolution. The original notice also said a small number of users had crashes under investigation and asked them to provide DxDiag details. These release-era notes show that display and stability problems were addressed at the time; they do not establish a current universal crash fix. The developer-pinned Steam community thread contains the historical notices.

Use the game’s Steam technical-support flow as the first escalation route. Steam’s listing also gives info@mlgames.com and a customer-support website, but their current availability has not been confirmed; prefer Steam’s support flow if either contact appears stale or the email bounces.

The historical pinned notice asked players to include DxDiag with their issue. A useful report should also state when the failure occurs, the game version if visible, Windows version, GPU and driver, resolution, window mode, launch options tried, and any error message. A recent individual Steam Community report describes a crash during play, but one user’s account does not establish how common the problem is, what caused it, or which fix works. Steam Community is the source for the pinned notice and user reports.
