Cross Device Experience Host is a Microsoft Store-delivered Windows component that supports mobile-device and cross-device features; it is separate from Phone Link on your PC and Link to Windows on your Android phone. To fix an installation or update problem, first trigger installation from Windows Settings and update the component through Microsoft Store Library. If that fails, reset the Store cache, repair or reset the component, and check AppX deployment logs for a specific error.
Before troubleshooting: identify which component is failing
These names are easy to confuse:
| Component | Where it runs | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Cross Device Experience Host | Windows 11, delivered through Microsoft Store | Supports Windows mobile-device and cross-device functionality. |
| Phone Link | Windows PC | Provides the PC interface for messages, calls, photos, notifications, and other phone features. |
| Link to Windows | Android phone | Pairs the phone with Phone Link. Some Samsung and Surface Duo phones include it as a system integration. |
The current Windows 11 path to trigger the Cross Device Experience Host installation is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices.
- Turn on or open Allow this PC to access your mobile devices.
- Select Manage devices, then Add Device.
- Allow Windows to open Microsoft Store and install or update the required component.
If this route produces an error, continue with the following methods.
1. Check the Windows and phone prerequisites
Phone Link requires Windows 11, or Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later. The Android device must run Android 10 or later. Microsoft recommends using the latest available Windows version.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
For pairing and normal operation, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. A phone using multiple Android profiles must use its default profile. Phone Link does not support work or school Microsoft accounts, multiple Android profiles, or multiple-phone mode.
These requirements do not explain every Store installation failure, but checking them helps rule out an unsupported configuration.
2. Install or enable Phone Link from Windows Settings
On Windows 11, Microsoft’s current installation path is:
- Open Settings.
- Search for Phone Link.
- Select Enable or disable Phone Link.
- Turn on Turn on Phone Link.
- When the pop-up appears, select Install.
This may install or update supporting Store components, including Cross Device Experience Host. Restart Windows after installation, then try Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices > Add Device again.
3. Update Cross Device Experience Host from Microsoft Store
Updating Phone Link does not necessarily update every supporting package. Update the component directly:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Cross Device Experience Host.
- Select Update. If several Store apps are outdated, select Update all.
If the component is not listed, select Get updates in the Store’s Library area if that option is available on your build, then search again. A package update can also be blocked while the app or a related background task is running. Close Phone Link and other related apps before retrying.
4. Update Phone Link and Link to Windows separately
If the error appears while pairing a phone or Phone Link displays Update Required, update both sides of the connection.

Update Phone Link on Windows
Depending on the Phone Link version, use either path:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Phone Link > Settings > About > Updates > Update
- Phone Link > Settings > General, select the down arrow beside the Phone Link version, then select Check for updates
If there is no update, Phone Link displays You’re up to date. After updating, the app normally reopens. Version recognition can take several minutes. If it remains stuck in an update state, restart the Android phone and close and reopen Phone Link on the PC.
Update Link to Windows on Android
For the downloaded Android app:
- Open Link to Windows on the phone.
- Open Settings.
- Select Check for Updates.
- Wait for the update to finish, then close and reopen Phone Link on the PC.
On supported Samsung or Surface Duo devices with the preinstalled integration, use Settings > Advanced features > Link to Windows > … (More) > Link to Windows > Update. The update may be supplied through Google Play Store or Samsung Galaxy Store.
Microsoft currently lists these minimum versions for clearing the Update Required page:
| App | Minimum version |
|---|---|
| Phone Link for PC | 1.23112.85.0 |
| Link to Windows for Android | 1.24021.164.0 |
If both apps meet those versions but the message remains, use Phone Link > Settings > Feedback & Community > Send feedback, then choose Feedback Hub > Give new feedback.

5. Install or query the package with WinGet
If Microsoft Store does not offer the component normally, an elevated terminal can request it by its Microsoft Store product ID. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as administrator and run winget install 9NTXGKQ8P7N0.
When WinGet asks for confirmation, enter Y and press Enter. If the package is missing, WinGet retrieves it from Microsoft Store. If it reports that the package is already installed, this command has not repaired or updated it; open Microsoft Store > Library and select Update there.

This command is published by a third-party Windows publication rather than documented in Microsoft’s official Phone Link support instructions. Treat it as an alternative installation method, not a guaranteed repair command.
6. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged Store cache can prevent a Store package from downloading or updating. Press Windows key + R, enter WSRESET.exe, and press Enter. Wait for the reset to finish; Microsoft Store should open when the process completes. Then return to Microsoft Store > Library and try the Cross Device Experience Host update again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Repair or reset the Windows component
Windows 11 exposes repair controls for some Store-delivered components:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > System Components.
- Find Cross Device Host Experience.
- Select the … menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and try the installation or update again.
Repair is the less destructive option and is intended to preserve app data. If it fails, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset returns the component to its default state and can remove stored app state, so you may need to pair the phone again.
On some builds, the related entry is shown as Phone Link rather than Cross Device Host Experience. In that case use Settings > System > System Components > Phone Link > Advanced options > Repair or Reset.
8. Reset CrossDevice and Phone Link package state with PowerShell
Use this step when the problem includes the boot error “configuration registry database is corrupt”. It resets AppX package state; it does not repair the Windows registry or system files.
- Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell as administrator.
- Run Get-AppxPackage CrossDevice -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage and Get-AppxPackage YourPhone -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage.
- Restart the computer.
- Try Microsoft Store and the Mobile devices installation path again.
This procedure was confirmed in a Microsoft Q&A response for the specific boot-time CrossDevice error. It is not established as a universal solution for every Store update failure.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
A broader command sometimes suggested in the same discussion is:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” }
This re-registers all installed AppX packages and is considerably broader. Do not use it as a first-line fix for one failing component; use the targeted reset above before considering system-wide AppX re-registration.

Look for the error code immediately after reproducing the installation failure. Common examples include:
| Error | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|
| 0x80073CF0 | ERROR_INSTALL_OPEN_PACKAGE_FAILED; the AppxPackagingOM log may contain the specific reason the package could not be opened. |
| 0x80073CF3 | Package update, dependency, or conflict validation failed. |
Other deployment failures can result from a package still running, an incompatible Windows version, a mismatched architecture, or a missing dependency such as Microsoft.VCLibs, Microsoft.WindowsAppRuntime, or Microsoft.NET.Native. Store installations normally obtain framework dependencies automatically. Manual dependency work is mainly relevant to sideloaded or enterprise packages.
Before retrying an update, close Phone Link and terminate related background processes if they remain active. Microsoft’s MSIX guidance identifies running app instances and background tasks as causes of update failure. If the log reports a minimum-version or architecture mismatch, repeated installation attempts will not solve it; Windows or the package must meet the required version and architecture.
What not to try first
- Do not treat Cross Device Experience Host as Phone Link. They are related but separate Windows components.
- Do not rely on the old Windows Store Apps troubleshooter as a definitive fix. Its availability and path vary by Windows version; current guidance may instead route troubleshooting through the Get Help app.
- Do not assume SFC, DISM, CHKDSK, or registry repair will fix the package. Those tools are not established general fixes for this Store component, and a Microsoft Q&A case reported that system-file checks did not clear the specific CrossDevice boot error.
- Do not repeatedly run the WinGet command when it says the package is already installed. Use Microsoft Store Library to complete the update, then repair or reset the component if necessary.
Recommended order of attack
- Confirm the Windows, Android, Wi-Fi, account, and profile prerequisites.
- Use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices > Add Device.
- Update Cross Device Experience Host from Microsoft Store > Library.
- Update Phone Link and Link to Windows independently.
- Run WSRESET.exe.
- Use the component’s Repair, then Reset option.
- For the named boot error, reset the CrossDevice and YourPhone AppX packages with PowerShell.
- Use Get-AppxLog and Event Viewer to identify a deployment-specific failure.
FAQ
Is Cross Device Experience Host the same as Phone Link?
No. Cross Device Experience Host is a Windows Store-delivered supporting component. Phone Link is the Windows interface, and Link to Windows is the Android-side app or integration.
How do I update Cross Device Experience Host?
Open Microsoft Store, select Library, locate Cross Device Experience Host, and select Update. You can also trigger the feature from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices > Add Device.
Can I install it with a command?
Yes. In an administrator Command Prompt or Terminal, run winget install 9NTXGKQ8P7N0. If WinGet says it is already installed, use Microsoft Store > Library to update it. The command is third-party-published rather than an officially documented Microsoft repair procedure.
Will resetting the component remove my phone pairing?
Reset returns the app to its default state and can remove stored app state, so you may need to pair the phone again. Try Repair first, because it is the less destructive option.
What does Update Required mean in Phone Link?
It means either the Windows Phone Link app or the Android Link to Windows app is below the required version. Update both sides and verify that Phone Link is at least 1.23112.85.0 and Link to Windows is at least 1.24021.164.0.

The most reliable fix is usually to update the component through Microsoft Store > Library, rather than repeatedly reinstalling Phone Link. If Store cannot complete the operation, reset its cache, use the component’s Repair option, and only then reset the AppX state. For a boot-time “configuration registry database is corrupt” error, the targeted CrossDevice and YourPhone PowerShell reset is more relevant than generic registry or system-file repair. If the problem remains, Get-AppxLog and the AppX deployment logs can reveal whether the cause is a running process, dependency, version, architecture, or package conflict.
