Find the point where the crackle first appears before changing settings: compare the original audio file, local playback, OBS monitoring or recording, and the YouTube replay in that order. That tells you whether the problem is in the file, the computer’s playback path, OBS, or the stream and viewer playback chain.
Trace the crackle through the audio path
Use the same short passage for each comparison. Listen on headphones or another known-good playback device if available, and note the first point where you hear distortion. A crackle by itself does not identify its cause.
- Play the original file outside OBS. If it crackles there, inspect the file and its source. Consider replacing or re-exporting it from a legitimate source; changing OBS or YouTube settings will not repair noise already present in the recording.
- Play the file locally on the streaming computer. If the file sounds clean elsewhere but crackles on this computer, check the media player, operating-system output device, device connection, and driver path before adjusting YouTube settings.
- Check the OBS source and mixer. Confirm that the intended source is active and its mixer meter responds during playback. For a single local file, OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and has a Loop property. For a playlist, VLC Video has a Loop Playlist option. These settings repeat playback; they do not repair a damaged or poorly encoded file. OBS Media Sources
- Listen through OBS and make a short recording. Compare the monitored audio and recording with local playback. OBS recommends checking a device as early as possible in the signal path and again when it reaches OBS. Watch the mixer: levels approaching the red zone may indicate clipping. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Check the YouTube replay. If the original file and OBS capture are clean but the replay sounds bad, review encoder compatibility and stream health. Also compare playback on another device or network before deciding the encoder is at fault.
Check the loop and audio routing in OBS
Confirm the correct loop source
For one audio file, add or inspect an OBS Media Source and verify that Loop is enabled. For a playlist, use VLC Video and verify Loop Playlist. These options determine whether playback repeats, not whether the source is free of crackling. OBS Media Sources

Look for duplicate device capture
Capturing a device in a scene with Audio Input/Output Capture can create echo if the same device is also selected under Settings → Audio. Check both places. If the same device is being captured twice, remove or disable the duplicate path as appropriate for your scene. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

Follow the signal with monitoring
Listen at the earliest practical point in the path, then use OBS Audio Monitoring and a short recording to see whether the sound changes inside OBS. Check that neither the source nor monitored output is clipping. A monitoring-device fault can make monitoring sound bad even when the recording is clean, so compare both rather than relying on one listen.
Check audio format and stream health
Match YouTube’s documented audio recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations list AAC or MP3 audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo; the page lists 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. For a stereo sleep-music stream, check the encoder against YouTube’s current stereo recommendation. Do not change the sample rate blindly: the source, audio device, and encoder all need to work together. YouTube Live encoder settings

Test a representative segment before going live
Test the actual audio and video movement you plan to stream, and watch stream health during the test. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube Live encoder settings

Separate crackling from dropped frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable to the remote ingest server or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. That can cause delivery problems, but it is a different diagnosis from crackle already audible in the file or local OBS monitoring. If the source and local capture are clean, use stream-health information to investigate delivery rather than treating every network symptom as an audio-source fault. - PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Troubleshoot by where the noise starts
| What you hear | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The original file crackles outside OBS | Inspect the media file and its source; replace or re-export it from a legitimate source if needed. |
| The file is clean elsewhere but noisy on the streaming computer | Check the player, operating-system output device, device connection, and driver path. |
| Local playback is clean but OBS capture is noisy | Confirm the intended OBS source, check for duplicate device capture, inspect mixer levels, and compare the monitoring path with a short recording. |
| OBS monitoring or recording is clean but YouTube playback is noisy | Review encoder compatibility and stream health; compare the replay on another device or network before attributing the fault to the encoder. |
| The problem appears only under sustained system load | Reduce unnecessary OBS scene and source workload and other heavy processes, then repeat the same test and note whether the sound changes. OBS recommends Media Source or VLC Source for audio/video files; its encoding-performance guidance does not establish overload as the cause of every crackle.
