In New Outlook and Outlook on the web, also check whether the message is plain text—Draft with Copilot does not support that format, so switch to HTML. Other fixes depend on your Outlook app, account, mailbox, and privacy settings.
Start by identifying the Outlook app and failure
Note whether you use New Outlook, Outlook on the web, classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, or Outlook mobile. The available controls and steps vary by platform; follow Microsoft’s platform-specific instructions for drafting with Copilot.
- The Copilot button or Draft option is missing: check the signed-in account, access, Connected Experiences, app version, and—if you use classic Outlook—current known-issue status.
- The draft opens, but Generate fails: record the exact error and check whether it matches Microsoft’s documented classic Outlook issue below.
- Drafting works, but editing does not: select the text in the message, open the Copilot button, and choose an available action or enter a request. Microsoft describes this selection-based editing workflow in its Outlook Copilot drafting guidance.
Switch plain-text messages to HTML in New Outlook or the web app
Draft with Copilot in New Outlook and Outlook on the web does not support messages composed in plain-text format. Go to Settings > Mail > Compose and reply, then choose HTML in the message-format dropdown. Retry in a new message. This documented limitation is specific to New Outlook and the web versions; it should not be assumed to explain a problem in classic Outlook, Mac, or mobile.
Confirm the account, license, and mailbox
Check which account is signed in to Outlook and whether it is personal or work/school. Microsoft’s Copilot license-error guidance notes that the signed-in account may not have a Copilot license. For work or school content, use the organization account if your organization provides Copilot.

For classic Outlook, Microsoft’s Outlook Copilot tutorial describes qualifying licenses and Exchange Online mailbox requirements. In that classic Outlook context, archive, group, shared, and delegate mailboxes are not supported. These are not universal eligibility rules for every Outlook platform, so ask your organization’s administrator to verify your entitlement and mailbox arrangement. Microsoft also directs users who cannot access Copilot in Outlook to check with their IT administrator.
Make sure Connected Experiences are enabled
Copilot access in Outlook depends on Connected Experiences not being turned off in privacy settings. If your organization permits it, enable the setting, restart Outlook, and check whether the controls return. In classic Outlook, Microsoft’s screen-reader tutorial gives this path: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Settings. Labels may differ by app version.

Fix the documented classic Outlook draft error
Microsoft documented a classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 issue introduced with update version 2605. When users selected Generate for a new email, it could return “Sorry, something went wrong. Copilot is working on it.” Microsoft marked the issue fixed after a service change on May 27, 2026; the stated action is to restart Outlook. See Microsoft’s known-issues entry.
If you had reverted Outlook as a workaround, Microsoft says to restore updates via File > Office Account > Update Options > Enable Updates. Do not use a rollback as the default fix for this issue, which Microsoft marked resolved. For a different error or Outlook app, note the exact version and message and consult current Microsoft support or your administrator.

If Copilot buttons are missing in classic Outlook
Microsoft’s known-issues page, dated October 2026, lists “Copilot buttons are missing in classic Outlook for Windows” as under investigation. Check the current status page; that general issue entry does not establish the cause of every missing-button case. Ask your administrator to check applicable updates, license assignment, and organization policy.
