Start by identifying the exact handheld model and where the problem occurs: in the system menu or input test, across every game, or in one game or emulator. That distinction helps separate a device fault from a setting, SD-card, firmware, or game-specific problem. Try reversible checks first; use only the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model before changing firmware or formatting a card.
Start with the model and the symptom
Retro handhelds do not share one universal troubleshooting menu. Before following any instructions, note the device’s exact model, operating system, and firmware version. Also record what changed shortly before the problem began, such as a firmware update, a new SD card, a control remap, or a headphone adapter.
Describe the fault precisely. “Performance problem” could mean low frame rate, long loading, a crash, failure to boot, or one title that will not launch; those symptoms do not point to the same cause.
- System menus and input test: Does a button or joystick fail outside a game?
- All games or one: Does the issue affect every title, or only one game, emulator, or core?
- Audio output: Is sound missing from the built-in speaker, headphones, Bluetooth headphones, or only through an adapter?
- Boot and loading: Does the handheld reach its menu, and do games return to the menu or fail to load?
These checks help locate the problem; they do not by themselves prove a hardware defect or a fix.

Try basic, reversible checks
- Restart the handheld. If a joystick is drifting or unresponsive, Anbernic specifically advises restarting its supported devices without moving the sticks during startup.
- For missing audio, check the volume and output routing. Remove and reseat the connected headphones or adapter; if possible, test the headphones with another source or try a known-working pair.
- Do not format the SD card, reflash firmware, or open the device as an initial test. Those steps can affect data or create new problems.
For model-specific directions, use the manufacturer’s current support page or manual. Menu labels and recovery procedures for one brand or operating system should not be assumed to apply to another.
Fix buttons or joystick problems
Test input outside a game
Use the handheld’s built-in hardware, button, or IO test if its official instructions provide one. Miyoo directs users to Settings > Calibration to recalibrate a joystick, Key Map to reset button assignments, and Hardware Test to check a stuck button. Anbernic’s joystick and button guidance points users to its settings IO test. These are different, model-specific procedures.

If a control fails in the system test, note which input fails and when. Anbernic asks users whose issue persists to provide a button-test video when contacting support. If the input works in the system test but not in one game, check that game’s or emulator’s mapping before treating the button as broken.
Separate a mapping issue from a hardware fault
A failure limited to one title or emulator may come from its control mapping or configuration. A community-maintained Retroid wiki documents historical examples for the original Retroid Pocket 2 and RetroArch, including mapping-related problems; those examples date to 2020 and are not current universal instructions for newer Retroid devices. For your handheld, consult its current official guidance before changing configuration files or resetting mappings.

Troubleshoot missing audio
Headphones connected through an adapter
Miyoo’s adapter guidance applies to headphones connected by an adapter cable: first confirm the headphones work, then flip the adapter and reinsert it if sound is still absent. This is not evidence that the same step will fix a built-in speaker problem.
Bluetooth headphones or other output problems
Miyoo advises using the latest official firmware for the specific model when Bluetooth headphones will not connect. Confirm that firmware instructions match your exact handheld; do not install firmware intended for another model. If sound is absent only on one output, record whether the built-in speaker works without the accessory, along with the model, firmware, and output device, before contacting support.

Diagnose crashes, slowdowns, and games that will not load
Only one game or emulator is affected
If just some games fail to load on a Miyoo device, Miyoo suggests trying a different RetroArch core for the relevant emulator. A single-title or single-core failure does not, on its own, establish a hardware or overall performance problem. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal frame-rate tuning checklist or a setting that improves every handheld.
Games return to the menu or fail across the library
Miyoo identifies SD-card corruption, incompatibility, and an incomplete system installation as possible causes of games returning to the menu or failing to load. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends testing a new, readable card and installing official firmware appropriate to the console. Before formatting or replacing a card, back up any recoverable data; verify the exact model’s card format, capacity, and compatibility requirements rather than assuming a generic card will work.

The handheld is stuck on its logo or will not boot
Miyoo’s boot troubleshooting advises removing the SD card to test whether the card is implicated, then following model-specific reflash steps if needed. Do not treat that as a universal procedure: use the instructions for the exact Miyoo model, and back up recoverable data before formatting or reflashing.
An RG35XX crashes
Anbernic’s crash guidance is specifically for the RG35XX family and suggests flashing firmware, then contacting support with a video if the issue remains. Follow the current update instructions for the exact RG35XX variant; do not apply them to a different handheld or variant without checking its official guidance.
Know when to contact support
Contact the manufacturer if a built-in input test continues to show a failed control, audio remains absent after checking the relevant output and accessory, or official recovery instructions do not resolve boot or crash problems. Send concise, useful details:
- Exact model, operating system, and firmware version
- What the symptom is and whether it affects menus, all games, or one game
- Recent changes, such as an update, card replacement, remapping, or new accessory
- Results from the hardware or IO test and the steps already tried
- A test video if the manufacturer requests one
Avoid opening the device as a routine troubleshooting step. The guidance cited here does not establish a safe, universal repair procedure, and disassembly may damage the handheld or affect warranty coverage. Miyoo’s support page says: “If the issue still persists after inserting an SD card, please contact our support team for further assistance.”
