If The Elder Scrolls: Arena will not start or behaves oddly, begin with the DOSBox launchers included in Bethesda’s Windows installation. The package provides separate fullscreen and windowed launch options, and Bethesda says the default DOSBox configuration works with most hardware setups. Try the windowed launcher first if the fullscreen display is the problem; use the symptom-specific steps below before changing DOSBox settings.
Start Arena with Bethesda’s supplied launcher
Bethesda’s Windows installation includes batch files for fullscreen and windowed play, along with Start menu shortcuts when the installer can create them. The documented default paths are:

Your paths may differ if you chose another installation folder. Bethesda’s support guidance says the default DOSBox configuration works with the majority of hardware setups, so do not assume that a configuration change is needed simply because Arena runs through an emulator. Arena won’t launch
Try both included launchers
- Open the Start menu and look for the Arena shortcuts, if available.
- Try
Arena (Windowed).batfrom the installation folder. - If that does not work, try
Arena (Full Screen).bat.
If neither starts the game, check whether a DOSBox window or status window appears and note any displayed error. The DOSBox 0.74-3 manual recommends checking the status window for messages. Bethesda describes DOSBox as a third-party program supplied to run the MS-DOS game and directs users to DOSBox documentation for emulator-specific assistance; its support page addresses help with DOSBox on Windows: Bethesda DOSBox assistance. An error message can help distinguish an emulator startup problem from an Arena configuration problem, but the available documentation does not identify one universal cause for every launch failure.

Arena DOSBox fullscreen is too large or looks wrong
Switch modes before editing settings
In DOSBox 0.74-3, press Alt+Enter to toggle between windowed and fullscreen modes. If one mode displays correctly, use the matching Bethesda launcher rather than changing configuration settings unnecessarily.
Check high-DPI scaling on Windows
The DOSBox 0.74-3 manual documents a Windows 10 case in which Windows display scaling above 100% combines with DOSBox scaling and makes the fullscreen image too large. Its workaround is to locate the DOSBox executable, open Properties, select Compatibility, choose Change high DPI settings, and set the high-DPI scaling override to Application. The manual cautions that this can affect windowed mode; if that happens, adjust windowresolution.

The manual also identifies fullresolution, output, and aspect as DOSBox configuration settings relevant to display behavior. These instructions are specific to DOSBox 0.74-3; they do not establish that every Arena package uses the same executable or configuration file. Consult the DOSBox configuration reference before changing those settings.
Arena runs too slowly or too quickly in DOSBox
DOSBox emulates CPU cycles, and the cycle setting affects application speed. In DOSBox 0.74-3, Ctrl+F12 increases cycles and Ctrl+F11 decreases them. Make a small adjustment at a time and check whether the game responds better.

- If Arena is running too slowly, try increasing cycles.
- If it is running too quickly or becomes unstable, decrease cycles or undo the change.
- Avoid setting cycles excessively high: the DOSBox manual warns this can reduce performance. The
cycles=maxsetting can make a game run too fast or become unstable.
DOSBox’s configuration file controls whether cycle behavior is fixed, automatic, or maximum. The original Arena reference card also recommends lowering the game’s Detail setting for slow play. Its mention of SmartDrive belongs to the original DOS troubleshooting context; it is not a required Windows tweak.
Arena has sound problems or locks up
The original Arena manual says the game’s Configure Game option controls Sound FX and Music drivers. The shipped defaults recorded in that manual are no sound, with historical settings of base I/O address 220 hex, IRQ 7, and DMA 1. Incorrect settings may cause problems.

For a suspected sound conflict, the reference card recommends setting both sound and music to No Sound as a diagnostic. If that helps, review the game’s setup options where applicable. The I/O, IRQ, and DMA figures are DOS-era sound-card settings; do not copy them into modern Windows audio configuration.

The original Arena reference card states that the game requires 603K of conventional memory in its DOS environment; Bethesda Softworks is named on the card, which does not state a year. It describes checking free conventional memory from a DOS prompt and configuring EMS through EMM386 for original DOS setups. The card also connects frequent lockups with low conventional memory and sound conflicts.

These are historical requirements and troubleshooting steps for DOS, not a Windows memory requirement. A current Windows PC does not need to be limited to 603K of free memory, and the reference card does not establish that modern Windows users should install or configure EMM386.
What compatibility information can—and cannot—tell you
The DOSBox compatibility list has community entries for Arena across different DOSBox versions. One entry identifies Arena as runnable on DOSBox 0.74-3, while entries for other versions differ. These records are useful context, not Bethesda certification or a guarantee for every storefront package or operating system. Check the Arena DOSBox compatibility entry with that limitation in mind.
Bethesda’s support material discussed here covers its Windows installation and bundled DOSBox approach. It does not establish a current, version-by-version compatibility guarantee for Windows 11, macOS, Linux, or every Arena storefront package. The archived Arena manual includes this general invitation, attributed to VJ Lakshman, Chief Designer: “Your feedback on TES: Arena is very important to us.”
