If ROCm will not install, cannot see your GPU, or fails inside a container, first verify the exact combination of GPU or APU, ROCm release, operating system, kernel, driver and—where applicable—firmware. ROCm is a coordinated software stack, not a single package; reinstalling cannot make an unsupported combination compatible. Start with AMD’s compatibility matrix for the ROCm version you plan to use, then troubleshoot the layer where the failure occurs.
What to record before troubleshooting
Write down the system details before changing packages or drivers. This gives you a reproducible configuration to check against AMD’s documentation and share if you need support.
- GPU or APU: record the exact model and, if known, its architecture.
- Software versions: record the ROCm release, operating-system release, running kernel and AMD GPU driver version.
- Installation method: note whether ROCm came from a system package manager,
amdgpu-install, pip, a tarball or a runfile. - Execution environment: state whether the issue occurs on bare-metal Linux, Windows, WSL or inside a container. If using a container, record its base image and how it is launched.
- Data-center system details: for Instinct hardware, include the server or infrastructure vendor and firmware bundle version if available.
- Failure evidence: save the complete error text and note whether the failure occurs during installation, device discovery or when starting a particular workload.
Is your GPU and operating system supported together?
Check AMD’s compatibility matrix for the specific ROCm release you intend to use. Its ROCm 10.0.0 matrix, dated 2026-08-25, lists supported GPU and system combinations. Match the exact GPU or APU and the operating-system and kernel environment; do not infer support from a product family name alone.
AMD says that ROCm depends on “a coordinated stack of compatible firmware, driver, and user space components.” Its ROCm Core SDK 10.0.0 release notes also caution that “Actual support might vary by AMD GPU or APU.” In other words, a general operating-system list is not proof that your particular device is supported on that OS and kernel. Check the device-specific matrix, including whether AMD distinguishes compute and graphics support for your use case.

The ROCm 10.0.0 matrix includes families such as Instinct MI350, MI300, MI200 and MI100, and Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000. It also maps particular devices to LLVM targets—for example, MI350 to gfx950 and MI300 to gfx942. These are examples, not a substitute for checking your own device and environment in the full matrix.
- If the exact combination is listed: continue to driver, installation and device-access checks.
- If the GPU, OS or kernel combination is not listed: do not treat repeated reinstalls as a compatibility fix. Select a documented supported combination or consult AMD or your system vendor about support for that configuration.
- If the matrix is ambiguous: compare the release notes and installation instructions for the same ROCm release, and seek clarification with your exact device and OS details rather than extrapolating from another model.
Choose the installation method that matches your system
Different ROCm installation methods serve different environments. Identify the method already used before attempting an update, repair or removal, and follow the instructions for the same ROCm release. Mixing steps from different methods or older releases can leave you unsure which components are installed.

| Method | When the ROCm 10.0.0 guide describes using it |
|---|---|
| Package manager | Standard Linux system installations. |
amdgpu-install |
Radeon and Ryzen use cases. |
| pip | Python and machine-learning workflows, generally in a virtual environment. |
| Tarball | Controlled or portable installations. |
| Runfile | Guided, offline, packageless or restricted setups. |
These methods are not interchangeable repair recipes. Use the matching ROCm release’s guide to check prerequisites, installation and removal steps for the method you chose. AMD’s ROCm 10.0.0 release notes say that release adds support for new GPUs and APUs and fixes minor issues in the Runfile Installer; that is a release-specific note, not evidence that every runfile failure has the same cause.
Check the driver and firmware alongside ROCm user space
A successful installation of ROCm user-space packages does not by itself establish that the complete stack is compatible. Compare the installed AMD GPU driver and ROCm components with the requirements for your release and exact hardware in AMD’s documentation.

On data-center systems, firmware is another part of the compatibility check. AMD’s documentation says firmware packages are distributed by the OEM or infrastructure provider. If you do not know which bundle is installed, ask that provider for the version and compare it with the supported configuration. A version mismatch is a useful lead to investigate, but confirm it against the documented requirements before treating it as the cause.
ROCm is installed but does not detect the GPU
Check whether the failure is on the host or confined to a container before changing the installation. Then verify actual device enumeration with tools appropriate to your ROCm release and workload. Package presence alone does not prove that ROCm can see the intended GPU.

Check discovery on the host
- Confirm that the GPU and OS/kernel combination is listed for your ROCm release.
- Verify that the expected AMD GPU driver and ROCm user-space components are installed for that release, using the package manager or installation method you actually used.
- Run
rocminfoand check whether it enumerates the intended GPU. The AMD ROCm 7.2.4 installation guide documents this as a discovery check; confirm the appropriate procedure for your installed release. - If the problem is specific to an OpenCL workload, use
clinfoas an OpenCL check where supported by your setup. The ROCm 7.2.4 guide documents this tool; it is not a replacement for checking the API your workload uses.
Check Linux device permissions
On Linux, confirm that the account running the workload has the device access required by the instructions for your ROCm release. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 guide describes access through the video and render groups. Check your release’s current instructions before changing group membership; the documented example is version-specific.
Check container device access
A container can only enumerate GPU devices exposed to it. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 guide uses /dev/kfd and /dev/dri as device nodes to pass through for a Docker setup. Treat those paths as a version-labeled example, and verify the current release’s container instructions before copying a launch command or changing device mappings.

Run the relevant discovery check on the host and again inside the container. If the host sees the GPU but the container does not, focus on the container’s device access and permissions. If neither environment sees it, return to the compatibility, driver and host-permission checks instead of debugging the container alone.

Use the stage where installation fails to narrow the investigation. Avoid switching installation methods or removing components until you know what was installed and which release’s instructions apply.
- Installer rejects the system or device: recheck the exact GPU, OS and kernel in the release-specific matrix. A general OS support statement may not cover your device.
- Packages install but the GPU is absent: check the driver and user-space versions, Linux device permissions and—if applicable—container device exposure. Verify enumeration with the appropriate tool rather than treating package installation as proof of detection.
- Runfile installation fails: compare the full error with the runfile instructions for that ROCm release. ROCm 10.0.0 notes minor runfile installer fixes, but that statement does not identify the cause of a particular failure.
- A Python or ML workflow fails while system tools work: check that the workflow uses the intended Python environment and ROCm-compatible components for the release. The ROCm 10.0.0 guide describes pip for Python and ML workflows, generally in a virtual environment; successful host discovery alone does not establish that every framework or environment is configured correctly.
- Failure began after an update: record the versions before and after the change, then compare the new combination with that release’s matrix and installation guide. Do not assume instructions or compatibility from an older release still apply.
When to escalate the issue
If your exact combination is documented as supported and the checks above do not resolve the problem, send AMD or the system vendor a concise configuration report. Include:
- GPU or APU model, ROCm version, OS release, running kernel and AMD GPU driver version;
- installation method and the step where it fails;
- the full error text, not just a paraphrase;
- whether the issue occurs on the host, only in a container, or in both; and
- for an Instinct server, the OEM or infrastructure provider and firmware bundle version if known.
This information lets support compare the actual system with the documented stack and distinguish a compatibility issue from a platform-specific installation or access problem.
