Start with the symptom: check cables and on-screen setup for a new console, confirm network details and PlayStation Network status for connection problems, and retry a stalled update before using USB or Safe Mode. If the PS5 cannot reach the home screen, use Safe Mode; reserve reset and reinstall options for last, because they erase console data.
First, identify where the problem occurs
Use the least disruptive path that fits what you can still access:
- First-time setup or no picture: check the console’s model-specific base or feet, HDMI connection, and power, then follow the on-screen setup.
- Wi-Fi or PlayStation Network: verify the network name and password, check service status, and test the connection before changing advanced router settings.
- Update stuck at the home screen: retry the update through Downloads/Uploads.
- Cannot reach the home screen: start Safe Mode and try its update option before considering a reinstall.
Sony’s getting-started guide covers controller pairing, language, internet and display settings, Rest Mode options, and the user agreement. Its physical setup guidance also calls for connecting HDMI and power and attaching the base or feet specified for your model. Follow the display troubleshooting link on that page if the console powers on but the screen stays blank; a blank image alone does not establish that the console has failed.
How to connect a PS5 to Wi-Fi or wired internet
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select the saved or new Wi-Fi network, choose Connect, and enter its password if prompted. Check that you selected the correct network name (SSID) and that the password and network security method are correct.
- For Ethernet, choose Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- Check the PlayStation internet setup guide and PlayStation Network service status before changing router settings.
If Wi-Fi is weak or unstable, try moving the console or router to improve wireless placement, or test a wired LAN connection if available. The PS5 supports IPv6, but it does not support IPv6-only connections: the router must also provide IPv4.

Advanced connection settings include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy. The CFI-7000 model group also has a Multi-Link Operation setting when supported by the router and console. These are not routine first steps; Sony advises consulting your ISP or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with them.

Those advanced port and IP suggestions apply to the cited error guidance; they are not a universal requirement for every PS5 connection problem.
Retry a PS5 system update that is stuck or failing
If the PS5 reaches the home screen
For an update that has stalled or failed to download, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, select View Error Info, then choose Try Again. If the retry fails: install the official update from USB
Use a computer and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Download the update file from Sony’s official system software page, and use the prescribed folder and filename structure:
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5, then create a folder namedUPDATEinside it. - Save Sony’s update file in
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase folder and file names if the console does not recognize the file. - Safely connect the drive to the PS5. If the console reaches the home screen, follow Sony’s system software page; if it does not, start Safe Mode and select Update System Software, then choose the USB update option.
Sony’s procedure estimates approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. Use only the official file and Sony’s prescribed process. Do not turn off the console or disconnect it during installation: Sony warns that interrupting an installation can damage the console. Detailed Safe Mode update steps are in Sony’s Safe Mode update guide.

Start Safe Mode when the PS5 will not reach the home screen
Safe Mode is for troubleshooting when the normal startup path is unavailable or when Sony’s instructions direct you there for an update or repair option. To enter it, turn the console off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller as prompted and choose the needed option. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes the available tools and their effects.
| Safe Mode option | What it does and data effect |
|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Checks and repairs console storage without erasing data. |
| Update System Software | Updates from the internet or a USB drive. |
| Restore Default Settings | Restores settings; Sony says it does not delete content in console storage. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Addresses some feature or performance problems by clearing system cache or rebuilding the database. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and removes system software, which must be reinstalled. |
Try non-destructive options that match the symptom first. Back up important data before selecting either reset option. Reinstalling system software is a last resort, not a routine update fix; Sony estimates approximately 1.2 GB of free space for the reinstallation file.
