When a PS5 problem appears after setup, start with the symptom and any error code—not a factory reset. Check cables and settings first, then use the matching PlayStation Support steps. Some Safe Mode options preserve data; others erase it.
Start with the symptom and error code
Different PS5 errors can involve the network, system software, a game or app, a disc, or storage. Write down the full code shown on screen and look it up in PlayStation’s PS5 error-code index before trying a general fix. A server or account issue, for example, calls for different troubleshooting than a console storage error.
Fix a blank screen or Safe Mode that will not appear
Check the display connection
- Confirm the console is powered on and the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the PS5.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If possible, test another HDMI cable or TV input, changing one connection at a time.
PlayStation identifies a loose HDMI connection as one possible reason Safe Mode is not visible and recommends trying another USB, HDMI, or power cable if Safe Mode will not launch. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode troubleshooting guide.
Enter Safe Mode and adjust video output
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which PlayStation says sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Choose Change Video Output to try a different resolution or HDCP setting.
PlayStation describes Safe Mode as a way to start a console “with only the most basic functions active.” Its Safe Mode guide explains the available options.

If Safe Mode still will not start
Hold the power button until the console beeps and turns off. Disconnect its power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again. If the console still will not start or display Safe Mode, use PlayStation’s troubleshooting steps and, if needed, its repair service.
Fix an internet, sign-in, or server connection problem
- Check whether another device on the same network can access the internet.
- Check PlayStation Network service status through PlayStation Connectivity Support before changing console settings.
- On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose a connection, and enter the network security details if prompted.
- Look up the exact error code in PlayStation’s code index to distinguish connection failures from timeouts, sign-in problems, or service restrictions.
A service outage is not evidence that the console itself is defective. Use the error-specific instructions rather than applying an unrelated storage or reset fix.

Fix a PS5 system software update failure
If the home screen is available
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for and install the update. If an update failed over Wi-Fi, PlayStation says connecting the console to the router with a LAN cable may help. See PlayStation’s PS5 setup and update guidance.
If the console cannot reach the home screen
Start Safe Mode using the button sequence above and select its system software update option. PlayStation also documents a manual USB update route. It requires a PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller and USB cable; follow the current folder and file naming instructions on PlayStation’s update guide exactly.

Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as an early update fix: that option deletes user data. Back up what you can and verify the option’s on-screen description before proceeding.
Address startup, storage, or system-feature problems
Safe Mode includes tools with different purposes and data consequences. Check the on-screen description before selecting one.

For a specific code, check PlayStation’s error-code index before assuming database maintenance is appropriate. Sony’s Safe Mode documentation lists these options and their functions.

Do not assume one remedy applies to every crash. For the specific error CE-108262-9, PlayStation recommends updating system software. If the error occurs after starting a game or app, its guidance also includes deleting and reinstalling that game or app, and trying Safe Mode cache/database options. Follow the instructions for the exact code on PlayStation’s CE-108262-9 support page; for other codes, use the PS5 error-code index.

Fix a PS5 that will not read a disc
Use the disc-specific steps in PlayStation’s guide to disc-reading issues. Disc troubleshooting is separate from internet or download fixes; follow that guide’s instructions rather than applying a generic network or database remedy.
When to seek repair
If the relevant cable checks and PlayStation’s symptom-specific software steps do not resolve the problem, use PlayStation Repairs to check available diagnostics and service options. A symptom alone does not establish a hardware defect, so do not open the console as a troubleshooting shortcut.
