Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no single fix for every fan-made P.T. PC port: these are separate projects and versions. First identify the exact build and whether you are running it on Windows or through Linux/Wine; then match the symptom to the limited, configuration-specific fixes documented for that build. A workaround reported for one Unreal PT version may not apply to another recreation.
Identify the project and version before troubleshooting
“Fan-made P.T. PC ports” is not one maintained product. For example, the P.T Port Project by SmoggyChips is described as a Windows project built with Unreal Engine 4.18.3 and marked in development. It is distinct from Unreal PT v0.9.2 and v1.0.7 discussed in the Linux/Wine compatibility notes. Do not apply instructions across projects just because their names are similar.
Before changing settings, note:
- The project name and exact version shown by the build or its project page.
- Whether it runs natively on Windows or through Wine on Linux; for Wine, record the Wine version.
- Your operating system, GPU and driver version.
- The exact symptom or error text, when it happens, and whether you can reproduce it.
If the scene is black or unusually dark on Linux/Wine
The documented rendering reports apply to Unreal PT v0.9.2 and v1.0.7 running through Wine, not to fan-made ports in general or native Windows builds. The PlayOnLinux compatibility notes describe an environment of XUbuntu 18.04 64-bit, Linux kernel 5.4 and AMD Vega 11 graphics.
Unreal PT v0.9.2: only lights are visible
For v0.9.2, the notes report that ceiling lights and the radio clock could be seen while the rest of the image was black. This was reported across Wine 4.0.4, 4.21, 5.0.1, 5.8 and 5.12; the listed workaround is DXVK 1.70. The notes associate the issue with AMD graphics and say it was not observed in v1.0.7.

Unreal PT v1.0.7: image is nearly unplayably dark
The same page separately reports an image so dark as to be nearly unplayable with v1.0.7 and Wine 5.0.1, and lists DXVK 1.70 as the fix. These are historical compatibility observations, not confirmation that DXVK 1.70 will solve rendering problems on a current Linux distribution, another GPU, a different Wine release, or a different port. Confirm that your project and version match before trying that configuration.
If Unreal P.T. crashes about 30 seconds after launch
Community posts describe Unreal P.T. closing roughly 30 seconds after launch, including when the player reduced resolution or left the opening menu idle. A November 2022 community tutorial proposed adding entries to the Windows hosts file to send datarouter.ol.epicgames.com and datarouter-weighted.ol.epicgames.com to 0.0.0.0. Some replies said the change helped; a later reply said it did not. The available reports do not establish the crash’s cause, and no project maintainer or vendor source confirms this as an official or universal fix.

Do not begin with this system-level edit. First verify the project and build, capture the crash timing and any error, and check for current guidance from the relevant project community or maintainer. Editing the hosts file changes hostname resolution for the named hosts across the system and could affect other software that uses them. If you choose to follow the community workaround, preserve a copy of the original hosts file and make sure you can restore it; do not assume the change is safe or effective for unrelated crashes.
If you see a D3D device-removed or GPU error
An error such as Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost points to a graphics-device/runtime failure category, but it does not by itself identify a P.T.-specific cause. An Epic Developer Community thread about UE4.18.1 includes a D3D11 device-removed error. One participant said deleting a cache folder triggered shader recompilation and stopped a crash in that participant’s test project. That report was not about a P.T. port, so it does not establish cache deletion as a fix for this game.

Record the complete error, project and version, GPU and driver, operating system, and whether other DirectX games fail in the same way. Those details help distinguish a port-specific problem from a broader graphics or driver issue. Avoid deleting caches or changing graphics components based solely on an unrelated test-project report.
Use a symptom-first troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the build. Identify the exact recreation or port and version; do not assume a fix for Unreal PT v0.9.2 applies to v1.0.7 or another project.
- Record the environment. Note Windows versus Linux/Wine, Wine version if applicable, GPU and driver, and the full error or visible symptom.
- Match the symptom. For black or very dark rendering, compare your setup with the specific Unreal PT Wine reports above before considering DXVK 1.70. For a short-delay crash, treat the hosts-file edit only as an anecdotal community suggestion. For D3D device loss, use the message as a clue to investigate the graphics/runtime path, not as proof of a known game fix.
- Report what remains. If the problem persists, provide the relevant project community or maintainer with the version, operating system, GPU/driver, steps that reproduce the issue, and logs or full error text. The available sources do not identify one universal support channel.
What is—and is not—established
The compatibility evidence supports a narrow DXVK 1.70 workaround for two rendering reports involving specified Unreal PT builds and historical Wine setups. The roughly 30-second crash suggestion is based on community reports with mixed outcomes, and the D3D cache anecdote concerns a different test project. The available sources do not establish a verified fix for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 crash, nor do they identify a trustworthy universal download or support source. Use project-specific guidance and avoid substituting a fix from a different build.
