If a Windows 11 feature upgrade has left your PC slow, unstable, or with a broken device or app, first identify whether the problem followed the upgrade or a separate monthly update. Restart, check Windows Update history, and try a symptom-specific troubleshooter before removing updates or rolling back. Back up important files before recovery: Microsoft warns, “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.”

Windows 11 problems after an update: identify what changed

A feature update moves Windows to a new version; a monthly quality or security update does not. The distinction matters because the recovery choices differ. Note when the problem began, the Windows version and build, and the update shown in Update history. Also record the exact symptom: for example, a restart loop, black screen, failed update and error code, Wi-Fi failure, display flicker, or one app or device no longer working. A problem that appears after an update is not necessarily caused by it.

To check your version and build, open Settings > System > About. To review recent updates, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. If the PC is managed by work or school, check with IT before changing managed update or recovery settings.

Try low-risk fixes first

  1. Save your work and restart. A restart can clear a temporary problem after setup or an update.
  2. Run a troubleshooter for the symptom. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the relevant option. For Windows Update problems, use the Windows Update troubleshooter or Get Help flow described by Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guide.
  3. Check power and connectivity if an update failed. Keep the PC connected to power and verify its internet connection before trying the update again.
  4. Back up important files before recovery or advanced troubleshooting. Do not assume every rollback or reset has the same effect on files and installed software.

Microsoft lists several possible causes for update errors; an error code is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis. For example, its guide associates 0x8007000d with possible update-file or cache corruption, 0x800705b4 with an update that took too long or was interrupted, 0x80240034 with an incomplete update or connection issue, 0x800f0922 with insufficient disk space or component issues, and 0xC1900101 with a possible incompatible driver. The same guide gives 16 GB free space for 32-bit OS and 20 GB for 64-bit OS in the specified upgrade scenarios; those figures are not a universal requirement for every modern Windows update.

If Wi-Fi, a device, or an app stopped working

First determine whether the failure affects one device or app, or whether Windows itself is unstable. If only one component is affected, investigate its driver or compatibility before using a system-wide recovery option. For a device-specific driver, use the PC or hardware maker’s instructions rather than a third-party driver-updater utility.

Roll back a recently changed driver

If a driver change appears connected to the problem, open Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, and choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, if available. Administrator permission may be required, and the control is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver to restore. See Microsoft’s Device Manager driver instructions. If rollback is not available, check the manufacturer’s support instructions before installing another driver.

Use the Task Manager check for screen flicker

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager while the screen is flickering. If Task Manager flickers too, Microsoft says the display driver is the more likely area to investigate. If Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. Follow Microsoft’s screen-flickering troubleshooting steps to continue.

How to uninstall a Windows update

Uninstalling a recent update removes that selected update; it is not the same as returning to the previous Windows feature version. Use it only when the timing and evidence point to a particular update. Removing a security update can reduce protection, and Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows starts

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates.
  3. Select the relevant update and choose Uninstall.

If Windows does not start

Enter Windows Recovery Environment, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates. The available choices depend on the device and update. Read Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows Update, including its cautions about removing security updates.

How to go back to the previous version of Windows

If the trouble began after a feature-version upgrade, the Go back option may return the PC to its prior Windows version. Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back, if offered. Microsoft says this is available for a limited time— in most cases, 10 days—and only while the required previous-version files remain on the device.

The rollback keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Back up important files and make sure you can reinstall any software you rely on before starting. Follow Microsoft’s go-back instructions for the current eligibility details.

Repair the current Windows installation

On eligible Windows 11 installations, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now reinstalls the same Windows version using a repair version of the last successfully installed OS update. Microsoft says this option repairs system files and components while keeping personal files, apps, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet during the process.

The option may not appear on managed work or school devices, or on unsupported or out-of-date configurations. If it is available, follow Microsoft’s current-version repair instructions.

When to use System Restore, Reset, or installation media

If the targeted fixes and current-version repair do not resolve the problem, Windows offers more disruptive recovery paths. Choose based on whether Windows starts, how broad the damage is, and what you can afford to reinstall or restore.

  • System Restore: returns system changes to an earlier restore point; it is intended to undo system changes made after that point.
  • Reset this PC: offers choices to keep personal files or remove everything. Even a keep-files choice removes apps and settings, so read the screen’s choices carefully.
  • Installation media: can reinstall Windows, but the effect on files depends on the path selected and can include erasing the device.

Back up before proceeding, and inspect the exact keep/remove choices shown on your PC. For a managed computer, consult IT before changing recovery settings. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows recovery options.

Known issues depend on Windows version, build, hardware, and management environment. Compare the PC’s version and build with Microsoft’s current Windows release-health notes before making a broad change. Do not assume a reported issue applies to every Windows 11 PC.

A scoped example: Windows 11 version 26H1 in September 2026

Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 notes for Windows 11 version 26H1, OS Build 28000.2954, documented desktop-loading problems after the August 2026 non-security preview update KB5120996 and subsequent updates. Microsoft said the issue was primarily observed on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix and could occur more often with some existing user profiles; it is not a general diagnosis for consumer PCs.

For affected systems, Microsoft documented a temporary workaround: open Task Manager, choose Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and select OK. The page also describes a Known Issue Rollback for enterprise-managed devices, which requires IT to install and configure the matching Group Policy and restart affected devices. Microsoft said the policy disables the change until a future update resolves the issue.

Choose recovery by the problem and its consequences

Option Best fit Effect on files and software Availability or caution
Driver rollback A single device or display problem that followed a driver change Reverts the selected device driver; it is not a Windows version rollback. Requires a previous driver and may require administrator permission.
Uninstall a recent update A specific recent update appears linked to the problem Removes the selected update; effects depend on that update. Some updates cannot be removed. Removing a security update has security implications.
Go back A problem followed a feature-version upgrade Keeps personal files; removes apps and drivers added after the upgrade and reverses later settings changes. Usually available for 10 days, if required prior-version files remain.
Fix problems using Windows Update System-file or component problems on an eligible installation Reinstalls the same Windows version while keeping files, apps, and settings. May be unavailable on managed or unsupported/out-of-date configurations; requires power and internet.
System Restore, Reset, or installation media Broader problems not resolved by targeted repair Effects vary: Restore reverses system changes, Reset may remove apps/settings or everything, and installation media can erase the device depending on the path. Read the exact choices and back up first; contact IT for managed devices.
