Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart by identifying where the fault appears: in one game, across multiple games, or in the picture sent to your screen. A single-game crash calls for game and save checks; a display or HDMI problem calls for signal-path checks; trouble across several games may point to the console or its shared video setup. Changing PS5 output settings can resolve compatibility or presentation problems, but it cannot guarantee better game-engine performance.
First, sort the problem by scope
| What you notice | Start here |
|---|---|
| One game freezes, crashes, stutters, or looks wrong | Check that title’s installation, update, and save; consult its publisher if the issue is specific to its gameplay or online service. |
| Several games have problems | Check PS5 system software and whether the issue affects gameplay or the shared display signal. Persistent problems across titles warrant PlayStation Repairs. |
| No image, a pixelated or unexpectedly low-resolution picture, flicker, missing HDR, or incorrect image geometry | Check the HDMI path, screen compatibility, and the matching PS5 video setting. |
For display issues, first see whether the same screen and HDMI path behave normally with another source, if one is available. A problem that follows the PS5 across screens points in a different direction from one limited to a particular TV input, cable, or receiver.
Fix game freezes or crashes in one title
- Confirm the game is fully installed. A game that is still downloading or installing may not behave as expected.
- Check for the game’s update. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
- Install the latest PS5 system software. Use the console’s system software update option in Settings; menu wording can change with system updates.
- Test whether the existing save is involved. For a persistent crash, Sony recommends starting the game from the beginning without using the existing save. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a reason to erase the only copy of important progress.
- Reinstall if the issue continues. Delete and reinstall the game, then test it again.
With a disc game, inspect the disc and clean it with a clean, soft cloth. Try another disc as well: if only one disc has trouble, that helps distinguish a disc-specific fault from a wider console problem.
If just one title remains affected, check with its publisher for known gameplay or online issues. If multiple games are affected, or the fault persists after these steps, consult PlayStation Repairs. Resetting the console is a later, destructive option: Sony advises backing up data first because a reset erases console storage.

Fix no image, pixelation, or the wrong resolution
For “No image output from your PS5 console?”, check the physical connection before changing game settings:
- Make sure the screen is on and set to the HDMI input used by the PS5.
- Secure the HDMI cable at both ends. If possible, test another cable and another HDMI port.
- Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, bypassing a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Power off the console and screen, unplug both, wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and test again.
- Check for screen firmware updates and consult the screen’s manual for settings required to accept high-resolution signals.
On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. With Resolution set to Automatic, the console detects the connected display’s capability and selects the highest supported resolution. Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information to see the reported resolution, VRR, and HDR capability. If the problem persists after checking the signal path and settings, contact PlayStation Repairs.

Troubleshoot PS5 4K 120 Hz output
4K at 120 Hz requires the entire chain—console, cable, selected TV port, TV settings, and display—to support the mode. A TV may have only one suitable port, or may require that port’s enhanced signal mode to be enabled in its settings.
- Confirm in the TV or monitor manual that the display supports 4K/120 Hz, and check whether the feature is limited to a particular HDMI port.
- Update the display firmware and enable the required high-bandwidth or HDMI 2.1 mode for that port if the TV requires it.
- Connect the PS5 directly to that port while testing; remove receivers and other devices from the signal path.
- Try the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5. If it is faulty or the setup cannot deliver the desired mode, try an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A new cable is not a universal fix for unrelated picture problems.
- On the PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic while diagnosing.
Enable 120 Hz Output only when both the display and the game support it. If a 120 Hz game has video-output problems on a monitor or other screen, turn 120 Hz Output off to test. That can help isolate a compatibility issue; it does not make the game run at a higher frame rate.

Diagnose flicker, uneven presentation, and VRR
Flicker at 4K
As a diagnostic, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1, then -2 if needed. These settings reduce the signal bandwidth available and limit some output combinations, including 4K/120 Hz and other high-bandwidth formats. If flicker stops, that is evidence of a signal compatibility or bandwidth issue—not a general picture-quality upgrade. Return to Automatic if the lower transfer rate does not help or prevents a mode you need.
VRR and frame pacing artifacts
Variable Refresh Rate dynamically synchronizes a compatible screen’s refresh rate with PS5 output. On supported combinations it can reduce screen tearing and some frame-pacing artifacts, but it is not a universal fix for stutter, slow performance, or crashes. Results vary by screen, game, and selected visual mode; some games also need a game update for VRR support.

Find VRR controls under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Use VRR only with compatible equipment. If a title behaves unexpectedly with VRR enabled, try disabling Apply to Unsupported Games, or turn VRR off temporarily to compare. PlayStation’s feature explanation describes the intended behavior, not a guaranteed improvement in every game.

- On When Supported: HDR is used for supported content; non-HDR games and apps remain in SDR.
- Always On: SDR content is converted to HDR output as well, which can make its appearance differ from native SDR.
Use Adjust HDR in the same Video Output area and follow the on-screen calibration instructions. There is no single HDR mode that looks best on every screen, and not every title is authored for HDR. The resulting image depends on the PS5, display, signal path, and content.
Adjust display area for cropped edges or a border
If the image is cropped or surrounded by black, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen instructions. This adjusts image geometry; it does not change the game’s resolution or fix a faulty HDMI signal.
