If an indie horror game will not launch, stutters, flickers, or crashes, start with the game’s own system requirements and official support instructions. Then try low-risk checks—verify the installation, update Windows and graphics drivers, close unnecessary background apps, and adjust graphics settings. These are general first steps, not guaranteed fixes: the right remedy depends on the game, launcher, PC, and exact error.
Start with the symptom and the game’s requirements
Look up the specific game’s minimum and recommended PC requirements on its official store or support page, then compare them with your computer’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, and operating system. Minimum requirements are not a promise of high frame rates. If your PC meets the minimum but falls short of the recommended specifications, try a lower graphics preset before considering hardware changes. Fix launch failures and missing-file errors
Check security software and repair the installation
Security software can quarantine a game executable, so check its quarantine or protection history if the launcher reports a missing file. Capcom Support notes that security software can sometimes prevent an executable from launching because of a false positive. For Steam’s “Missing Executable” error, Steam recommends checking security software and verifying game files. Restart the PC, then use the launcher’s own verify, repair, or equivalent option. In Steam, open the game’s library entry and use its Properties menu to find the installed-files verification option; labels can change with Steam updates.
Only create a security exclusion for the specific game and trusted files if you have confirmed it is appropriate, and follow your security vendor’s instructions. Do not disable protection broadly or download replacement executables from unofficial sites.

Update Windows and graphics drivers
Check Windows Update and install pending updates, then check for a graphics-driver update through the GPU manufacturer’s official channel. Restart afterward if the update instructions call for it. Official troubleshooting pages from Larian Studios and Quantic Dream include driver, Windows, and installation checks, but their title-specific advice should not be treated as universal instructions for other games.
Improve low FPS, stuttering, or lag
Reduce load with reversible changes
- Close avoidable background work. Quit nonessential applications and overlays, especially those using significant memory or graphics resources. Keep the launcher open if the game requires it.
- Lower graphics demand. Reduce resolution or select a lower graphics preset, then test the same scene or area. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can tell what helped.
- Check available memory and power. Close applications you are not using, and connect a laptop to power while playing.
- Compare results with requirements. If the PC is below the game’s minimum specifications, settings changes may not be enough. If it meets minimum but not recommended requirements, reduced settings may improve playability.
Steam notes that third-party games and PC configurations differ, so a setting that helps one title may not help another. Make incremental changes and ask the developer about unclear in-game options rather than applying generic tweaks. Steam’s guidance also recommends reducing performance load; Capcom’s checklist covers requirements, background applications, and graphics settings.

Address flicker, blank screens, and display trouble
First try the game’s own graphics or display settings and check the monitor’s selected input and settings. If the game or GPU vendor documents a shader-cache or other cache procedure, follow the instructions that apply to that particular title or graphics hardware. Capcom lists display settings, monitor settings, and shader cache among possible checks, but this does not establish that every flicker or blank screen has the same cause. Avoid deleting files or changing configuration files based on instructions for a different game.
Know when a crash is a PC problem
If only the game closes, continue with the game-specific checks above. If the entire PC restarts or displays a blue or gray stop screen and requires a restart, Steam classifies that as a computer problem rather than an ordinary game failure. Steam’s PC-crash guidance points toward PC-level assistance. Contact the computer maker or a qualified technician if the problem persists instead of repeatedly changing game settings.

Give official support useful evidence
If general checks do not resolve a game-specific problem, contact that game’s official support and include details that help reproduce and diagnose it:
- The exact error message and when it appears, such as before the launcher, at startup, or after entering gameplay.
- Your PC specifications and Windows version.
- Your graphics-driver version and the launcher you use.
- Steps that reliably trigger the problem and any changes you already tried.
- Crash reports or logs, if the game provides them.
For examples of game-specific crash-reporting guidance, see Larian Studios’ startup-crash support page. Do not apply its API, redistributable, or configuration remedies to another game unless that game’s developer directs you to do so.
