This guide focuses on Gears of War: Reloaded, the current PC release identified by Xbox and Steam. The original 2007 PC game and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition are separate releases, so Reloaded’s requirements and troubleshooting notes may not apply to them. First confirm your edition and whether you installed it through Steam or the Xbox app; keep that information with any error details.
Check whether your PC meets Gears of War: Reloaded’s requirements
Steam lists the following baseline specifications for Reloaded. Minimum requirements do not guarantee smooth performance at every resolution or graphics setting.

These figures are Steam’s published requirements; consult the Steam product page for the listing. Check the Windows version, CPU and GPU models, available storage, and RAM before changing settings. If your PC is below the listed baseline, that may explain a launch or performance problem; don’t assume a component upgrade is the first or only remedy.
If Gears of War: Reloaded won’t launch or keeps crashing
Work through low-risk checks first. The steps below are general troubleshooting, not a claim that each one is a confirmed Reloaded-specific fix.

- Restart Windows, then start the game from the same storefront where you installed it—Steam or the Xbox app.
- Check for game updates in that storefront. If you suspect damaged files, use the storefront’s built-in file repair or verification option. The exact menu path varies by launcher.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver through the relevant official update channel. Note the driver version before and after so you can tell whether the change affected the problem.
- Temporarily close overlays and monitoring utilities for one test run. If the game starts or becomes stable, reopen them one at a time to identify a possible conflict.
- Record the failure precisely: note the error text, when it appears, whether the game reaches a menu, and whether the same failure returns after a restart.
The Coalition reported addressing Steam launch crashes in a developer update dated August 29, 2025. That is historical launch-week information, not confirmation that every current crash is fixed or that a continuing crash has the same cause. See The Coalition’s Steam news feed for the dated update. Avoid unverified registry edits, random DLL downloads, disabling security software, or community launch commands as a first response.
Reduce stuttering or low FPS on PC
Make a repeatable baseline
Choose a scene you can revisit, then note the resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, and approximate frame rate. Change one setting at a time and compare in the same scene; changing several at once makes it difficult to identify what helped.

Adjust resolution, preset, and upscaling
Try lowering the resolution or graphics preset one step, then retest. Reloaded advertises AMD FSR 3.1 and NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 support. Compare native rendering with an available upscaling mode under the same conditions, balancing frame rate against image quality. The game also includes a benchmark mode that can help you compare repeatable runs, though a benchmark cannot diagnose every launch or performance issue. Xbox describes the PC feature set in its May 5, 2025 announcement.
Check frame caps and display behavior
Confirm that an in-game or driver frame-rate cap is not set lower than you expect, and check that your display is using its intended refresh rate. Reloaded advertises variable refresh rate support, but the result depends on the display, GPU, driver, and configuration. If frame delivery feels uneven, test with a consistent cap and compare before and after rather than changing several display options together.

Don’t assume the lowest texture setting is fastest
In one PC Gamer test on an Asus ROG Ally, lowering textures brought little performance benefit; the reviewer preferred Medium textures alongside a Low preset. That observation applies to that tested setup, not every PC. If you are tuning a handheld or a system with limited graphics memory, compare settings individually and keep the texture level that provides an acceptable balance.
Handheld performance can differ from desktop results
Do not use a desktop benchmark or another player’s frame rate as a promise for a handheld. In PC Gamer’s ROG Ally test, the game dipped below 40 fps in open areas at 15 W, 1080p, FSR Balanced, and a custom Low preset; the reviewer also reported noticeable input lag. Those are results from one device and configuration, not a universal handheld benchmark.

For context, PC Gamer reported more than 60 fps on its tested RTX 4050 laptop at 1080p, Ultra preset, with FXAA. That result is specific to the reviewer’s laptop and settings, not a guaranteed target for other RTX 4050 systems. The publication’s Gears of War: Reloaded performance analysis provides the test context. On your own device, compare the same scene and settings at the power mode you actually use.

Let any loading or preparation activity shown by the game finish before judging performance, then test the same scene again. Reloaded-specific shader preparation behavior is not established here, so a first-run hitch should not automatically be attributed to shader compilation or treated as evidence of a known fix. Microsoft’s October 2026 Advanced Shader Delivery post concerns Gears of War: E-Day, not Reloaded; it does not establish a Reloaded fix.

If a problem remains reproducible after basic checks, use the official route identified on the Steam product page: Xbox customer support. The Coalition’s Steam update also points players to the Xbox known-issues list; its current contents may change.
Include enough detail for support to distinguish a game issue from a system or configuration issue:
