If an early-access PC game crashes, stutters, will not launch, or seems to have lost a save, start with safe checks: restart the computer, confirm the game’s system requirements, update the operating system and drivers, and verify the game files in its launcher. These steps can address common installation or setup problems, but they cannot repair an underlying game bug. For known issues, patches, and game-specific save instructions, check the developer’s current support page for your exact game and build.
Why an early-access game may crash or refuse to launch
A crash can come from several places: damaged or missing installation files, outdated system software or drivers, a conflict with another program, hardware below the game’s requirements, or a defect in the game itself. Steam recommends general checks such as restarting, updating, verifying files, disabling nonessential software, and checking system requirements; its guidance notes that launch failures can vary across PC configurations. A computer that is close to a game’s minimum requirements may still have performance or launch problems.
Try the checks below in order. If a step does not help, note that result rather than assuming the next check has identified the cause.
Try these checks if the game crashes or will not launch
- Restart the computer. Reopen the launcher and try the game again.
- Check the game’s published system requirements. Compare them with your computer’s hardware and operating system. Requirements and known issues can change, so use the developer’s current information for the game and build you have installed.
- Install operating-system and device-driver updates. Use the official update source for your operating system or hardware. The right steps depend on your computer and devices.
- Verify the installation files in your launcher. This checks for missing or damaged game files. Use the instructions for the launcher you actually use below.
- Temporarily disable nonessential background software as a diagnostic check. If the game then launches, that is a clue to investigate—not proof that a particular program is responsible. Re-enable software you need after the test.
- Check the game developer’s current support or known-issues page. If the general checks do not resolve the problem, send the developer the game version, operating system, hardware, exact error message, and steps you have tried. A game-specific defect may require a developer fix.
Verify files on Steam
- Open Library, right-click the game, and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish. Steam says the check may take several minutes.
Steam notes that one or more files may fail to verify normally when they are local configuration files. Do not verify multiple games at once, or run verification while other system-intensive processes are active. Verify files in the Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library and find the game.
- Select the game’s three-dot menu, then choose Manage.
- Select Verify and let the check complete.
Epic says verification repairs files that differ from the expected version or are damaged, and that “Your saved data will not be affected.” See How do I verify game files in the Epic Games Launcher?.
How to investigate stuttering or poor performance
Stuttering by itself does not identify a single cause. First check the game’s published requirements and whether your operating system and device drivers are current. Hardware near the minimum requirements can still struggle with performance, and the best game-specific settings depend on the title and system.

Next, distinguish a game-only problem from a wider system problem:
- Only the game stutters: Record when it happens and check the developer’s support page for issues affecting your game version. Avoid applying a universal graphics setting, API switch, or driver version as a guaranteed fix; there is no one setting established for all games.
- The whole computer slows, freezes, or restarts: Treat this as a possible system-level problem, not just a game crash. Steam notes that overheating may be associated with performance issues such as stuttering before a system crash. That is a possible clue, not a diagnosis; a forced restart or freeze can have other causes.
Protect your progress when a save is missing or out of sync
Cloud saves are not automatic for every game. Confirm that your particular game supports the cloud-save feature on the platform you use before relying on it. Steam Cloud can store save games and other user data, but whether a game uses it is game-dependent: Steam Cloud.

If Steam reports a cloud-sync problem
Resolve the sync issue before choosing to play if you can. Steam warns that proceeding despite a sync error can create conflicting data or risk lost progress. Offline play may leave a save unsynced until you are online again and can lead to a conflict. Steam also cautions that recovering lost data is not likely.
If Epic shows a cloud-save conflict
If you played offline on multiple devices and Epic presents a conflict, compare the available save versions and follow Epic’s instruction to choose the newer file to keep the latest save: How to resolve cloud save conflicts.

Before changing local save files
Save locations and recovery steps vary by game. Before deleting, replacing, or reinstalling files, make a separate copy of the local save data if you can. Ask the game developer for the correct folder and recovery procedure rather than assuming another game’s instructions apply. If the old computer is still accessible, Steam says the developer may be able to help locate and transfer files, but recovery is not guaranteed.

- The game title, installed version or build, and launcher.
- Your operating system and relevant hardware details.
- The exact error message, or a clear description of when the crash, stutter, or sync problem occurs.
- Whether the issue affects only the game or the whole computer.
- The troubleshooting steps you have already tried and what happened after each one.
