Then verify the invite, account, privacy, lobby capacity, game version and crossplay settings before troubleshooting the network. The exact error message—and whether either player can join other online games—helps identify where the connection is failing.
1. Find out where the connection is failing
Before changing router settings, check whether the problem affects one game, one player, one host or every online session. This narrows the likely cause and can save time.
- Check the platform’s service-status page and the game’s official support or status page for outages. Steam recommends checking its server status as an early diagnostic step: Steam Support: Network/Connectivity Troubleshooting.
- Ask whether each player can join other online games or servers. If only one friend or host is affected, focus first on that person’s lobby, account, firewall and network path.
- Note whether the problem began after a game or platform update. Steam says firewall permissions may need to be renewed after Steam or a game updates: Steam Support: Using a Firewall with Steam.
- Write down the exact error text. “Invite not working,” “can’t join my farm” and “failed to connect” can describe different points of failure; use the game’s wording when searching its official support information.
2. Check the account, invite and session
A failed invite does not necessarily mean the internet connection is at fault. The host may not have opened an online session, or a game-specific condition may prevent another player from joining.
Confirm both players are signed in and using the right accounts
Have both players sign in to the platform and game accounts they intend to use. Make sure the host sent the invite to the friend’s correct account, and have the friend try joining from the platform’s friends list or the game’s own join menu if available.

Make sure the host opened a joinable session
Check that the host selected an online or friends-only session, rather than a local or LAN-only mode. Review the lobby’s privacy setting and confirm there is an open player slot. These details vary by game. For example, Stardew Valley’s official co-op announcement identifies being signed out, an unsuitable session mode, privacy settings, a full lobby and version mismatches as possible reasons a farm cannot be joined.
Verify game version and crossplay settings
Compare the version shown by both players and install any available updates. If players are on different platforms, check the specific game’s official crossplay support and requirements; having accounts on the same platform service does not establish that the game supports crossplay between those devices.

For PS5, check the group and game requirements
On PS5, PlayStation says a player can join from a friend’s profile, a joinable game group or an invitation notification. The game must be installed and the group must have an open slot. Some games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, so confirm the current requirement on the game’s store or support page: PlayStation Support: Join a game on PS5 consoles.
3. Restart the game and test the local connection
- Close and reopen the game on both players’ devices. If the platform client is separate, restart it as well, then send a fresh invite after the host has reopened the session.
- If practical, connect the host’s computer or console directly to the router with Ethernet and try again. Steam recommends a wired test when investigating intermittent failures associated with wireless or powerline connections: Steam Support: Network/Connectivity Troubleshooting.
A wired test can help isolate an unstable Wi-Fi or powerline link. It will not resolve a service outage, incompatible crossplay, different game versions or every firewall and NAT problem.

4. Check firewall permissions and connection type
Allow the game and platform client through the firewall
On a computer, confirm that both the game and its platform client are allowed by the operating system’s firewall. Steam’s guidance is to authorize Steam executables for TCP and UDP access when prompted. If temporarily disabling a firewall changes the result, turn it back on and correct the specific permission rather than leaving protection disabled. Steam warns, “We do not recommend leaving your firewall disabled.” See Steam Support: Using a Firewall with Steam.
Understand peer-hosted and dedicated-server sessions
In peer-to-peer play, players try to establish communication directly through their routers and firewalls. Steam defines it this way: “Peer-to-peer networking is when messages are sent directly from one player to another.” NAT or firewall restrictions can prevent that negotiation from succeeding; some games or platforms may use a relay when a direct connection fails. With a dedicated server, players connect to the server instead, so the network path is different. The game determines which method it uses and how it handles a failed direct connection. Do not forward ports from another game’s guide
Steam’s published port requirements apply to Steam services and common Steam networking functions; a particular game may need other ports. Use the current official instructions for the named game and whether it uses a dedicated server. Do not apply a universal port-forwarding recipe to an unspecified title. University, business and proxy networks may also block required traffic. See Steam Support: Required Ports for Steam.

If the invite still fails, contact the game’s official support or consult its current service notices. Include the information below so support can distinguish session, compatibility and network problems.

- Both players’ platforms and the game versions shown on their devices.
- Whether the host is using peer-hosted play or a dedicated server, if known.
- Crossplay and account configuration, including any required in-game linking.
- The exact error message and the point at which it appears: opening the invite, entering the lobby or loading into the session.
- Whether either player can join other online sessions, whether the platform service is available, and which troubleshooting steps have already been tried.
Exact crossplay compatibility, required ports and error-code remedies depend on the game and platform combination. If the game’s official instructions do not identify the cause, provide those details to its support team before making advanced router changes.
