Then restart your computer, check that your operating system is supported and that security or network settings allow Chrome to reach Google’s update servers. Reinstall only after those checks; if updates are controlled by an administrator, contact them instead.
Check Chrome’s update status first
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
- Wait while Chrome checks for updates. The page shows your installed version and whether an update is available.
- If Chrome displays Relaunch, select it to finish applying the update. Save your work first: Incognito windows do not reopen after a browser restart.
Chrome usually downloads updates in the background and applies them after you close and reopen the browser. If there is no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is already up to date.
Use the error message to identify the failure
Google Chrome Help groups common update errors by where the process failed. Match the exact message before choosing a fix:
| Chrome message | What it indicates | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Update failed (Error: 3 or 11) | The update server is unavailable. | Restart the computer and check that network or security controls are not blocking Chrome’s update access. |
| Update failed (Error: 4 or 10) | The update check failed to start. | Restart the computer, then check for security software, network, or policy restrictions. |
| Update failed (Error: 7 or 12) | The update download failed. | Check the connection and confirm that Chrome’s update hosts are reachable. |
| Updates are disabled by administrator | An administrator or device policy controls updates. | Ask your work, school, or device administrator to review the policy. |
| Another “Update failed” message | The listed common error groups do not establish the cause. | Record the exact wording and continue with the general checks below. |
These error descriptions are from Google Chrome Help’s update troubleshooting guide. Do not assume that every update failure has the same cause.

#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Restart, then check update access
Restart the computer and check About Google Chrome again. Google recommends a restart when an update is incomplete. If the same error returns, review whether antivirus, firewall, parental-control, proxy, or other network settings are preventing updates. Google specifically says, “Make sure tools.google.com and dl.google.com aren’t blocked.”
- Allow software updates to connect to the internet.
- Check whether
tools.google.comordl.google.comis blocked by a firewall, filtering service, or network policy. - On a managed work or school computer, ask IT to inspect proxy and policy settings.
Do not turn off security protection wholesale to test an update. Google does not provide one universal set of firewall steps for every security product, so use that product’s documentation or ask its administrator to check the relevant settings. See Google’s update troubleshooting steps.

Confirm your operating system and update route
Chrome’s requirements vary by processor and operating system. Google’s current requirements page lists the following desktop support levels; check it again if your system is near the minimum because requirements can change.
| Platform | Supported requirement or update route |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later for Intel processors; Windows 11 or later for ARM processors. |
| Mac | macOS 13 Ventura or later. |
| Linux | 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 or later, Debian 10 or later, openSUSE 15.5 or later, or Fedora Linux 39 or later. Use the package suited to your device architecture and update Chrome through your package manager. |
| Chromebook | Update the browser by updating ChromeOS. |
See Google Chrome’s system requirements for the current list. Google’s troubleshooting page says Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1, as well as macOS 10.12–10.15 and macOS 11–12, no longer receive the latest Chrome updates. An unsupported system cannot be made current by repeatedly reinstalling the browser.

Reinstall Chrome only if the basic checks fail
If your operating system is supported and network access is not blocked, Google’s next step is to uninstall Chrome, download it again, and reinstall it. Reinstallation is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix.
- Confirm your operating system meets Chrome’s requirements.
- Uninstall Chrome using your operating system’s normal app-removal process.
- Download a fresh installer from Google Chrome’s download page and install it.
- If the regular Windows installer does not work, try Google’s standalone installer. On Mac, Google recommends downloading Google Software Update again.
For installation failures that persist, check the internet connection, available storage, and whether the account has the administrator permission required to install software. Google’s Chrome installation troubleshooter also discusses trying a fresh or offline installer where appropriate.

Windows
Start with More > Help > About Google Chrome and choose Relaunch if offered. If update errors continue after the access and compatibility checks, Google advises trying the standalone installer.

Linux
Google’s instruction is: “Linux users: To update Google Chrome, use your package manager.” The precise commands and repository settings depend on the Linux distribution, so follow its package-manager guidance rather than applying Windows or Mac installer steps.
Chromebook
Chrome updates arrive through ChromeOS. Check for and install ChromeOS updates rather than downloading the desktop Chrome installer.
Platform instructions are in Google’s Chrome update guide and update troubleshooting guide.
When to contact an administrator
If Chrome says updates are disabled by an administrator, or installing software requires rights you do not have, the setting is controlled outside your regular Chrome update workflow. Contact the person or team that manages the device. Do not try to bypass work or school policy; the administrator can review whether updates should be permitted.
Google’s guidance is to contact the administrator when a device is managed or the user lacks the required rights. See update troubleshooting and installation troubleshooting.
