When ChatGPT stops giving an answer, the cause is often a response still generating, outdated browser data, an interfering extension or security tool, or a network connection problem. Identify the symptom before repeatedly resending the same prompt.
Try the matching fix below. If ChatGPT works in a private window or on a phone hotspot, the problem is likely with your browser or network. If it fails everywhere and OpenAI’s status page reports an incident, waiting may be the only immediate solution.
Start with these quick checks
- Wait 30–60 seconds if the answer appears to be generating.
- Click Stop generating, then click Regenerate.
- Open a new chat and resend the prompt, especially if the original conversation has many turns.
- Refresh the page. If that does not help, hard-refresh with Cmd + Shift + R on macOS or Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Linux.
- Check OpenAI’s service status page.
A long conversation can become slow or stuck even when a new chat works normally. Starting a new chat is a useful diagnostic as well as a workaround.

1. Stop and regenerate the response
If the interface is still showing a loading state, do not keep clicking Send. Wait 30–60 seconds, then select Stop generating. Once the response stops, select Regenerate.

If regeneration fails, open a new chat and resend the prompt. Copy it first if it contains important context. OpenAI identifies long conversations with many turns as a condition associated with slow or stuck responses, and recommends starting a new chat.
You can also switch to another model in the model picker. If one model works while another does not, the issue may be model-specific. If every model fails in a new chat, investigate the browser, account or network.
2. Refresh ChatGPT and sign in again
A normal refresh reloads the application. Use a hard refresh if the page is frozen or controls such as Stop generating do not respond:
- Windows/Linux: Ctrl + Shift + R
- macOS: Cmd + Shift + R
Next, sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in. This refreshes the session and can resolve an authentication problem. If the issue returns, test a private window rather than repeatedly refreshing.

Open an incognito window in Chrome, an InPrivate window in Edge, or a private window in Firefox or Safari. Visit ChatGPT, sign in, start a new chat, and send a short test prompt.
This is a diagnostic test: most extensions are disabled in private mode by default. If ChatGPT answers there, an extension, stored site data or browser setting may be interfering with the normal session.

Pay particular attention to:
- Ad blockers and script blockers
- Privacy extensions that modify page content
- URL or redirect blockers
- Security software browser add-ons
- Extensions that inject writing, search or productivity tools into text boxes
Disable unfamiliar or unused extensions first. To identify the cause, re-enable them one at a time and test ChatGPT after each change. Extensions that block scripts or alter URLs are especially relevant to “There was a problem preparing your chat.”
4. Clear ChatGPT’s cache and site data
Outdated cache data can make ChatGPT slow or cause unexpected behavior after it previously worked normally. Clear the site’s stored data rather than deleting every browser setting if possible.

In Chrome or Edge, open ChatGPT, click the site-controls icon to the left of the address bar, open Site settings, and choose the option to clear or delete stored data. The wording varies by browser. You can also search for ChatGPT in the browser’s privacy settings and remove its cookies and site data.
Clear data for the ChatGPT site, including data associated with chat.openai.com where present. Then close the tab, open a new one, sign in again, and test a new chat. Clearing site data signs you out and removes locally stored settings for the site, but does not delete chats stored in your account.
5. Disable VPNs, proxies and secure-DNS filters
VPNs, corporate proxies and security-filtering services can prevent ChatGPT from establishing a reliable connection. OpenAI lists VPNs, proxies and secure-DNS tools such as Web Protect as possible causes of network and websocket errors.
- Disconnect the VPN or proxy.
- Temporarily disable Web Protect or a similar DNS/security filter.
- Restart the browser.
- Open a new chat and test again.
Do not leave security controls disabled permanently on an unmanaged device. If disabling one fixes ChatGPT, request an exception through your organization’s approved process or contact the administrator.

6. Try another network, browser or device
Connect the affected computer to a phone’s cellular hotspot and test ChatGPT. You can also compare another device on the same Wi-Fi network. These comparisons help separate a device problem from a network problem:

For “A network error occurred” or “An error occurred while connecting to the websocket,” changing networks or devices is particularly useful. Some ChatGPT features use secure WebSockets. A firewall or proxy must allow WebSocket traffic over TCP port 443 and permit the standard Upgrade: websocket handshake. Blocking that traffic can make responses stop streaming, disconnect or remain stuck.
7. Check a work or school network
Managed networks may block a required OpenAI domain or return filtered content that the ChatGPT application cannot process. Ask the network administrator to review OpenAI’s current network recommendations and allow required domains, including relevant entries under:
- *.auth.openai.com
- *.chatgpt.com
- *.ct.sendgrid.net
- *.intercom.io and *.intercomcdn.com
- *.oaistatic.com and *.oaiusercontent.com
- *.openai.com and *.oaistatsig.com
- challenges.cloudflare.com
The full allowlist also includes authentication, content delivery, billing, support and telemetry domains and can change. Use OpenAI’s network recommendations rather than relying on a partial list.

8. Resolve suspicious-activity warnings
“We detect suspicious activity” or “Unusual Activity Detected” means OpenAI has detected traffic resembling automated or unusual behavior. Try this sequence:

- Disable any VPN or proxy.
- Close and reopen the browser, or restart the device.
- Use a private window.
- Make sure the account is not being shared with other people.
- Change your ChatGPT password.
- Secure the email account connected to ChatGPT, including its password and multi-factor authentication.
On iPhone or iPad, if the app says “Unusual activity has been detected from your device. Try again later,” log out and back in, disable the VPN, update the ChatGPT app, and reinstall it if necessary.
9. Do not confuse Temporary Chat with a repair
Temporary Chat is a privacy and history feature, not a response-generation fix. To use it, start a new chat and select the pill-shaped Temporary button in the top-right corner. Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, and ChatGPT does not remember their contents.

If an ordinary new chat fails, Temporary Chat is unlikely to fix the underlying browser or network problem.
10. If answers appear to be missing, check chat history
Sometimes ChatGPT answered, but the conversation is missing from the sidebar or you are viewing the wrong account or workspace. Verify the email address, sign-in method and team or workspace first.
Then open Settings > Data controls and check the following:
- Open Archived Chats and click Manage. Archived chats have not been deleted.
- Confirm Chat history & training is enabled if you expect new chats to appear in history.
- Refresh the page, or sign out and back in.
- Check the service status page.
- If necessary, request a data export from Settings > Data controls.
11. Contact OpenAI Support with useful evidence
If ChatGPT fails in a new chat, another browser, a private window and another network, contact OpenAI through the chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of help.openai.com.

Include the exact error message, steps to reproduce it, the date and time with time zone, your sign-in method, plan, browser and version, operating system, device, network type, and workspace or organization details. Add screenshots and any request or completion IDs shown by the interface. Never send your password, one-time codes or other sensitive information.
Support may ask for a HAR file from the browser:
- Right-click the ChatGPT page and choose Inspect, or press Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows/Linux or Cmd + Option + I on macOS.
- Open the Network tab.
- Enable Preserve log.
- Click the crossed-circle button to clear existing entries.
- Reproduce the failure.
- Click the download icon and choose Export HAR (sanitized)….
HAR files can contain personal or sensitive data. Review the file before sharing it. The ChatGPT desktop app does not currently provide developer tools for capturing a HAR file.

Why is ChatGPT not answering but keeps loading?
Wait 30–60 seconds, click Stop generating, and then click Regenerate. If it remains stuck, start a new chat, hard-refresh the page, and test in a private window with extensions disabled.
Why does ChatGPT say “There was an error generating a response”?
First click Regenerate. If that fails, restart the browser or device, disable VPNs, proxies and security filters, then test another browser, network or device.
Can a VPN stop ChatGPT from giving answers?
Yes. OpenAI lists VPNs, proxies and secure-DNS tools such as Web Protect as possible causes of network and websocket errors. Disconnect the VPN or filter temporarily and test again.
Will Temporary Chat fix ChatGPT response errors?
No. Temporary Chat controls whether a conversation appears in history and whether ChatGPT remembers its contents. It is not a repair for failed response generation.
What should I do if ChatGPT works on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi?
The Wi-Fi network, proxy, firewall, VPN or DNS filtering layer is probably blocking required traffic. On a managed network, ask the administrator to allow OpenAI’s required domains and WebSocket traffic over TCP port 443.
