“Cannot take screenshot due to security policy” usually means Android, the app, or a work/school administrator deliberately blocked capture. First try the same screenshot shortcut on the Home screen or in Settings. If those ordinary screens work but one app or sensitive page does not, the phone is probably functioning normally; use that app’s share, export, download, receipt, statement, print, or support option instead. If the message appears everywhere, troubleshoot the phone’s screenshot function separately. Do not root the phone or use a capture utility to defeat a privacy control.
What the security-policy message means
Android has two main ways to prevent a screenshot:
- An app protects its window. Android’s
FLAG_SECUREwindow flag tells the system not to allow screenshots or show that window on a non-secure display, such as screen casting. Banking apps, password managers, one-time-code screens, and other apps handling sensitive information may use it. This is documented in Android Developers’ “Secure sensitive activities.” - A device or work-profile administrator disables capture. Android’s
DevicePolicyManagerallows a device owner or profile owner to turn off screen capture. The affected scope depends on whether the whole phone or only a managed profile is controlled.
Some authentication pages are protected by design. RSA, for example, states that Android phones do not allow a screenshot of a generated RSA SecurID token code. A block on that screen is expected behavior, not evidence of a broken display.
The message alone does not identify which control is responsible. The quickest useful test is whether an ordinary, non-sensitive screen can be captured.
Diagnose the problem before changing anything
- Open the Home screen or Settings. Use your model’s normal screenshot shortcut or built-in screenshot control.
- Compare the result. If the ordinary screen saves successfully, return to the app or page that failed and note whether the restriction is limited to one window.
- Check for a work or school profile. Look for a briefcase badge on apps, a work-profile section in Settings, or management notices. A managed app may be subject to an administrator rule even when personal apps are not.
- Test a second ordinary screen. This helps distinguish an isolated protected window from a broader screenshot-shortcut or system problem.

Fix an app-specific restriction
Use the app’s own export or sharing tools
Look for commands labeled Share, Export, Download, Receipt, Statement, Print, Save, or Account history. Financial and authentication apps commonly provide a supported way to obtain the information without exposing a protected screen to the screenshot system.
If the app offers no suitable option, contact its provider and describe the information you need, the screen where capture is blocked, and your Android version. Ask for an approved export or document rather than instructions to bypass the control.
Do not treat a protected screen as a phone fault
Clearing the app, reinstalling it, changing display settings, or trying another screenshot gesture will not necessarily remove FLAG_SECURE. The restriction is attached to the protected window and is controlled by the app. A different gesture can help only when the problem is the phone’s screenshot function, not when Android is correctly rejecting that particular window.
Fix a work- or school-managed restriction
Android assigns screen-capture policy control to device owners and profile owners. If a work or school administrator disabled capture, changing a personal setting cannot legitimately override it. Ask the help desk or administrator:

- Whether the entire device or only the work profile is restricted.
- Which approved workflow should replace a screenshot (for example, an export, report, or service-desk attachment).
- Whether the policy can be relaxed for a specific task, account, or test device.
Do not remove device management, delete the work profile, or factory-reset a managed phone merely to capture one screen. Those actions can erase data, violate organizational rules, or leave the device unable to access work resources. The administrator must decide whether a policy change is appropriate.
When screenshots fail on ordinary screens too
If Home, Settings, and another non-sensitive screen all fail, the security-policy wording may be incidental or the device may have a separate screenshot problem. Android and Samsung menu paths vary by model, software version, region, and policy configuration, so there is no single universal Samsung switch that fixes this message.
- Confirm the exact button combination or built-in screenshot control for your model and software version.
- Try the same control after a normal restart, if restarting is appropriate for the phone and its management policy.
- Check whether a physical button is stuck or a case is preventing the combination from registering.
- Consult the manufacturer’s support material for that specific model and Android release. Tell support that ordinary screens fail, not only a banking or authentication screen.
If ordinary screens work after these checks, return to the app-specific or administrator-specific paths above. A repair service is relevant only when the broader screenshot function remains faulty; this message by itself does not establish hardware damage.
Why bypass tools are a bad fix
Third-party recorder apps, root modifications, overlay tricks, and configuration changes are not appropriate ways to defeat a protected app or organization policy. Android documents the control as a privacy and security mechanism. Bypassing it can expose passwords, payment data, token codes, or company information and may violate the app’s terms or your organization’s rules.

Android’s documentation also notes limits to FLAG_SECURE: it is not fully reliable against every overlay attack, and for Android 11 (API 30) and lower Android says it helps around 70% of devices reliably. That is a version-scoped statement about the security control, not a statistic about how often this error occurs and not a guarantee that every protected screen is immune to every attack.

Treat this as intentional protection. Use the bank’s receipt, statement, download, or secure support process. Do not install a bypass utility.

A work app fails while personal apps work
Contact the organization’s administrator. Request the approved export or a temporary policy exception; do not remove the work profile.
Nothing can be captured after a system update
Verify the model-specific shortcut, restart if permitted, and consult manufacturer support for that exact software version. A universal settings path is not established because menus and policy controls differ.
A third-party screenshot app says it captured the page but the image is blank
That is consistent with protected-window behavior. Use the app’s supported export route or ask its provider for a document instead.
