If 4K video keeps pausing to load, first check whether the problem affects more than one app. Trouble across multiple apps—or on other devices using the same connection—points toward the network or Google TV device. If just one app is affected, start with that app and its service. If playback continues without pauses but motion looks uneven, investigate the TV’s motion settings and the device’s HDMI signal chain instead of assuming the internet is at fault.
First, work out whether the problem is buffering or stuttering
Buffering usually means playback pauses while more video loads. Stuttering can mean that motion looks jerky even though the video keeps playing. The distinction is a useful place to start, not a definitive diagnosis: an app, network, streaming device, TV, or connection between them may still be involved.
- Play another title in the same app.
- Open a different streaming app and play a 4K title if available.
- If possible, try a different device on the same home network.
- Several apps have trouble: check the home connection and Google TV device.
- Only one app has trouble: focus on that app, its settings, and its service status or support.
- Playback does not pause, but motion looks uneven: check motion compensation and the HDMI signal chain.
Menu names vary by TV maker and software version. For a TCL Google TV, TCL’s network troubleshooting guide covers connection checks, while its app troubleshooting guide covers app-specific steps. For other brands, use the matching manufacturer’s guidance.
If multiple apps buffer, check the network first
Confirm the selected Wi-Fi network and band
On Google TV, open Settings > Network & Internet and confirm Wi-Fi is on and the correct network is selected. If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, check which one the TV or streamer is using. Google suggests trying 5 GHz when it is available, but distance and signal matter: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz is often faster at shorter distances. Choose the band that delivers a stable signal where the TV is located, rather than assuming one is always better.

Improve placement and reduce competing traffic
- Move the router closer to the TV or streamer when practical, and avoid enclosing either device.
- Keep a Google streaming device away from nearby TVs, wires, or cables that may interfere with wireless reception.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and game updates while streaming; disconnect idle devices if the network is congested.
- Restart the router, and check whether its firmware needs an update.
Google suggests keeping a Chromecast or Google TV Streamer within 20 feet of the router. That is guidance for that device family, not a universal distance rule: walls, layout, router placement, and radio interference all affect coverage. If weak coverage affects other devices in the home too, mesh Wi-Fi may help extend coverage.
If needed, try a mobile hotspot briefly to see whether playback changes on a different network. Streaming over a hotspot may use mobile data, so check your plan before testing. A better result on the hotspot can help narrow the issue to the home network path, but does not by itself identify whether the router, modem, ISP, or network settings are responsible.

Consider Ethernet only if your device supports it
A wired connection can be worth trying when Wi-Fi is weak or unstable. Google recommends a cable connection for a slow Google TV network, but built-in Google TV televisions and streaming devices do not all have an Ethernet port. Some Chromecast devices need a separately sold adapter. Check the exact model’s ports and compatibility before buying a cable or adapter; an Ethernet cable cannot connect a device that has no supported wired-network option.
Use Netflix’s 4K speed figure as a service-specific reference
Netflix recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for UHD 4K; the year of that recommendation is not stated on its internet connection speed recommendations page. This is Netflix’s guidance, not a universal minimum for every streaming service, a guarantee of reliable playback, or a measurement of the speed available to your TV. Wi-Fi fluctuations, other household traffic, a service’s video encoding, and simultaneous streams can all affect playback.

If only one app is affected, troubleshoot that app
- Force stop the app, then reopen it.
- Check for an update to the app.
- Clear the app’s cache if that option is available in your TV’s settings.
- If the problem continues, consider clearing the app’s data or storage, or reinstalling it if your TV supports that option.
- Check the app provider’s support channels for service or playback issues.
Clearing app data can sign you out or reset app settings. Check the app’s credentials before doing it. TCL also recommends checking available device storage and the Google TV system update when troubleshooting an app; exact settings paths vary by model. Clearing app data is not the same as factory-resetting the television.
Restart and update Google TV before trying a reset
Google’s general troubleshooting sequence includes checking for a system update, restarting the device, checking the active profile, and clearing data for an affected app if necessary. On Google TV, the documented update path is Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update. To restart, use Settings > System > Restart. Labels may differ across manufacturers and software versions.

Test the TV’s motion setting
When video keeps playing without loading pauses but movement looks uneven, try changing the TV’s motion-compensation setting—enable it, disable it, or adjust it—and see whether the specific content looks better. The setting’s name and location vary by TV brand. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix for every source or display.

Match the HDMI requirements to the exact Google device
Check the device model and every link between it and the screen, including an AV receiver or soundbar if one carries the video signal. Google lists different cable requirements for its two 4K streaming devices:
| Google streaming device | Google’s stated HDMI guidance for 4K |
|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV (4K) | TV and connected audio equipment should support up to 4K; HDMI cable should support 4K and HDMI 2.0. |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | TV and connected audio equipment should support HDMI 2.1; use a 4K-capable HDMI 2.1 cable. |
These requirements are model-specific, so do not apply one device’s cable specification to the other. Google’s video-quality guidance includes the connection and motion-setting checks.
Leave factory reset until other checks fail
A factory reset erases device data. Google recommends trying other troubleshooting steps first, so reserve it for persistent problems after checking the network, app, system update, and restart. Before resetting, make sure you can set the device up again and sign in to the accounts you use.
