Start by identifying whether the browser video is dropping frames, the whole computer is slowing down, or the player is buffering. Those symptoms point to different causes: CPU/GPU or memory pressure, a browser or graphics-driver issue, or network congestion. Work through the matching checks below, changing one setting at a time.

First, distinguish dropped frames from buffering

Watch and listen to the same video while the game is running. A frozen or choppy picture while audio continues is more consistent with a playback, decoding, or rendering problem. If the game or desktop slows down too, system resources may be under pressure. A loading spinner, pauses while the player fetches data, or a sudden drop in video quality points more toward buffering or network congestion.

These symptoms can overlap, so treat them as clues rather than a definitive diagnosis. If you are unsure, note what happens and compare playback with the game closed; then use the checks below to isolate the cause.

Check which apps and processes are using resources

A game, browser tabs, extensions, and background jobs can compete for CPU, memory, GPU, disk activity, or network bandwidth. Check what is actually busy instead of assuming the game or browser is the cause.

  1. Inspect the browser. In Chrome or Edge, press Shift+Esc to open the browser task manager. Look for a tab, extension, or GPU process using unusually high CPU or memory while the stutter occurs. Browser task-manager details and labels can vary by version.
  2. Check Windows activity. Open Task Manager and review CPU, memory, disk, and network activity. MSI’s guidance for its notebooks recommends checking these figures alongside browser processes; the same checks can help identify a heavy process on other Windows PCs.
  3. Test one change. Close an unnecessary tab or pause a large download or update, then retest the same video while the game runs. In Edge, Microsoft also recommends sorting Browser Task Manager by CPU or memory, ending a suspect process, and observing whether usage falls.

Restore or reopen anything you stopped if it was not responsible. Avoid ending processes you do not recognize, especially operating-system or driver processes.

Compare hardware acceleration on and off

Hardware acceleration lets a browser use the graphics card for work such as video decoding and web graphics, which may reduce CPU load. But a graphics-driver or hardware compatibility issue can also contribute to flicker, black video, or corrupted playback. That makes acceleration a diagnostic variable, not a universal fix. MSI describes this trade-off in its online-video troubleshooting guidance.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  1. Find the hardware-acceleration setting in your browser. The exact menu path and label can vary by browser version and operating system.
  2. Change only that setting, restart the browser, and replay the same video with the game running.
  3. Compare whether the picture is smoother and whether system load changes. If playback or system performance gets worse, restore the original setting.

Mozilla lists video playback problems, flickering, high GPU temperature, and graphics-driver crashes among situations where turning acceleration off may help. Google also suggests disabling it for a green YouTube player. Those are troubleshooting examples, not proof that acceleration causes every gaming-related stutter.

Update graphics drivers and, in Edge, check video decoding

An outdated or incompatible graphics driver can affect browser video. Mozilla advises using the computer manufacturer’s driver update route where appropriate because generic drivers can cause problems with some computer and graphics combinations. Follow the manufacturer’s supported update process, restart the computer, and retest the same video. See Mozilla’s graphics-driver guidance.

For Microsoft Edge on Windows, you can also inspect the browser’s graphics and decoder status. These checks are Edge-specific, and decoder behavior can depend on the video format; Microsoft’s documentation describes format-specific paths rather than a universal rule for every browser or video.

  • Open edge://gpu and look for whether Video Decode is reported as hardware accelerated.
  • Open edge://media-internals while playing the video and inspect the decoder. D3D11VideoDecoder or MediaFoundationVideoDecoder indicates hardware decoding; FFmpegVideoDecoder indicates software decoding.

These pages help describe what Edge is using; they do not by themselves establish that a particular decoder is malfunctioning. Microsoft documents the details in its Edge hardware-acceleration and video-decoder guidance.

Review Edge power and background-tab settings

In Edge, Energy saver can affect video smoothness. If you use it, Microsoft recommends excluding performance-sensitive sites from Energy saver. Edge’s sleeping tabs and performance detector can also help surface tabs that are using memory or CPU. Feature availability and behavior vary by platform and settings, so first check whether the relevant feature is active on your device. See Microsoft’s Edge performance-features guidance.

If the player buffers, check network use

When the player shows a loading spinner or lowers video quality, inspect network activity rather than changing graphics settings first. A game launcher, platform update, cloud sync, or other download may be using bandwidth. Pause or wait for the transfer to finish, then test playback again. MSI identifies network congestion and insufficient bandwidth as possible causes of buffering or automatic quality reduction in its streaming-video troubleshooting guidance.

If wireless instability is plausible and your computer and router support it, briefly test with Ethernet. This can help assess the connection, but it will not fix dropped frames caused by rendering, decoding, or resource pressure.

Use comparisons to narrow down the cause

After the initial checks, make controlled comparisons rather than changing several things at once. Retest the same stream and, where possible, keep the game and other conditions the same.

  • With the game closed: If the video is smooth only when the game is closed, resource competition or a game-related interaction becomes more plausible.
  • In another browser: If the same stream plays smoothly elsewhere, the issue may be specific to the original browser’s settings, extensions, or playback path. YouTube Help also suggests trying another browser for playback problems; this is useful adjacent guidance, not a guarantee that all stutter has the same cause.
  • With acceleration toggled: Compare the result with the original setting restored after the test if disabling acceleration made matters worse.
  • Against resource activity: Check whether CPU, memory, GPU-related browser activity, or network use changes at the moment the symptom appears.

Change one variable per test and keep track of the setting you changed. This makes it easier to undo an ineffective change and identify which adjustment actually affected playback. No single configuration is established as best for every combination of game, browser, driver, and hardware.

When the stutter continues

If the video still stutters after resource checks, an acceleration comparison, and a supported driver update, note whether the issue is limited to one browser or video, whether audio continues during picture freezes, and what Edge’s decoder status shows if applicable. Those details can help distinguish a browser playback path from broader system or network trouble when seeking device-specific support.
