Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf an open-world RPG looks blurry or drops frames on PS5 Pro, first check whether the problem is in the game’s rendering or in the console-to-display signal. Confirm the PS5’s output, then compare the game’s graphics modes and test supported display features one at a time. The right fix depends on the game, its current version, and your TV or monitor; no console setting can guarantee a remedy for every title.
1. Identify what is happening
Before changing settings, note how the symptom behaves. Is the game consistently soft, does the image blur more while you move, or do you also see flicker, a blank screen, or an unexpected resolution or refresh rate reported by the display? These clues help separate a game-rendering issue from an output-signal problem, but no symptom alone proves a specific cause.

- If the game looks soft while the PS5 reports the expected output, investigate the game’s graphics options and current title updates.
- If the display flickers, loses signal, or reports an unexpected output mode, isolate the HDMI and display path before changing game settings.
- When comparing settings, use the same location and similar conditions so that scene changes do not confound the result.
2. Check the PS5 Pro’s video output
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Current Video Output Signal and Resolution to see what the console is sending to the display. Sony says the PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution (Sony’s PS5 resolution guidance).
Output resolution and a game’s internal rendering mode are separate settings. A correctly selected TV output does not establish that an RPG is rendering internally at a particular resolution or using a particular upscaling method. If your display supports 1440p, PS5 can test that output with SDR or HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, and with VRR; select 1440p if you want to use it. Check that the selected output suits your display rather than expecting this setting to change the game’s internal render resolution.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
3. Compare the game’s graphics modes
Open the named RPG’s own graphics or display settings and compare its available quality, fidelity, or performance options, if it offers them. The exact modes and trade-offs are title-specific, so there is no universal best mode for every open-world RPG on PS5 Pro.
- Choose a repeatable demanding area and note the game version.
- Compare the available modes in the same area, checking image clarity and stability while moving as well as smoothness and frame pacing.
- Change one setting at a time, then check the publisher’s current release notes or support page for guidance tied to that game and version.
If the image stays soft in the game but the console output is as expected, the game’s own options and current title guidance are the relevant next checks. Without the game’s name and version, a particular mode, known PS5 Pro issue, or patch fix cannot be prescribed.
4. Test VRR and 120 Hz only when supported
VRR and 120 Hz are compatibility features, not guaranteed frame-rate fixes. VRR requires a compatible display and game for its intended behavior, and Sony notes that results vary by TV. If you have enabled Apply to Unsupported Games and gameplay behaves unexpectedly, turn that option off and compare again. The 120 Hz Output option applies only to games and TVs that support 120 Hz; Sony advises turning it off if it causes video-output problems. Test VRR and 120 Hz separately so you can identify which change affects the symptom. See Sony’s video-output instructions for the available options.
5. Use the PSSR option as a controlled comparison
On PS5 Pro, Enhance PSSR Image Quality applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games. Sony says it is on by default and can be turned off under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. If the game is confirmed compatible and you are investigating image quality, compare the same scene with the option on and off. Do not assume it will fix blur in an unnamed RPG.

6. Troubleshoot flicker or an unstable signal
If the problem is screen flicker, Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2; limiting the 4K transfer rate may improve picture quality. This is a signal troubleshooting step, not an established fix for blurry game rendering or game-side frame drops. The settings restrict some output modes: both limit 4K 120 Hz and certain 4K color formats, while -2 limits more of the listed modes than -1. Check the active output again after changing the setting.
For a blank or unstable picture, or an unexpected high-resolution or refresh-rate signal, work through the connection path before buying anything. Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting guidance covers these checks:
- Confirm the TV supports the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use, and check for current TV firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display temporarily to rule out a receiver or other device in between.
- Use the display’s appropriate HDMI port and inspect the HDMI connection.
- Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. Consider a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if you have isolated a cable fault or capability mismatch; replacing a cable is not a fix for game-engine frame drops.
What to record before contacting game support
If the problem persists after separating the game and signal checks, collect details that make a title-specific diagnosis possible:
- The RPG’s name and installed version, plus the graphics mode and relevant image-quality settings.
- The PS5’s current output resolution and refresh rate, and whether VRR or 120 Hz is enabled.
- Your display model, the HDMI connection path, and whether the symptom is blur, frame drops, flicker, or signal loss.
- The location or activity where the issue occurs and whether changing one setting altered it.
Use the game publisher’s current support page or release notes for title-specific issues; the correct graphics mode and any known patch behavior cannot be established without the game and version.
