Then test close to the source device, away from wireless interference, and try locally stored audio. If the dropouts continue, restart and update both devices, remove the pairing and reconnect, then test the earbuds with another source to narrow down which device needs attention.
Why Bluetooth earbuds keep disconnecting
A dropout can come from the earbuds, the phone or computer, a low battery, distance or obstructions, wireless interference, software, or a pairing that is active on another device. On Windows, power-management settings or a Bluetooth driver can also be involved. Try the checks below in order; they help identify likely causes but do not by themselves prove a hardware fault.
Try these checks first
1. Charge the earbuds and source device
Charge both devices, then check the earbuds’ battery indicator or companion app if available. A low battery can prevent some Bluetooth devices from maintaining a connection, according to Samsung’s Galaxy Buds guidance and Microsoft’s Windows guidance.
2. Test nearby, with a clear path
Keep the source device close and remove obstacles between it and the earbuds. Samsung gives about 30 feet as general guidance on its US support pages, but range varies with the environment and model; it is not a guaranteed operating distance. 3. Move away from possible interference
Try the earbuds in another spot, away from a Wi-Fi router or running microwave. Google also lists wireless speakers and baby monitors as possible sources of interference. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both use the 2.4 GHz band, although some Wi-Fi devices can use 5 GHz; Apple explains this overlap in its wireless-interference guidance. Google’s list appears in its Pixel Buds connectivity steps.
4. Compare streaming with downloaded audio
In the same location, play a downloaded or locally stored track instead of streaming. Apple notes that headphones may lose connection more often with streamed audio than with content stored on the device. If local audio works better, that comparison is a useful clue, not proof that the internet connection is the cause. See Apple’s headphone audio troubleshooting page.

5. Restart both sides
Restart the phone, tablet, or computer, and restart the earbuds using the procedure for their exact model. If they have a charging case, follow the maker’s case instructions rather than assuming all models restart the same way. Samsung and Microsoft include restarting in their troubleshooting flows: Samsung earbuds and Windows Bluetooth.
6. Update software and firmware
Install available updates for the source device, earbud firmware, and companion app. Use the manufacturer’s official app or instructions for the earbud model. Samsung identifies outdated software and app conflicts as possible factors; its Galaxy Buds guidance and Buds3 connection guidance describe model-specific help.

7. Remove the pairing and reconnect
On the source device, forget or remove the earbuds from the Bluetooth device list, then pair them again using the earbud manual. Also check whether they are connected to another paired device, which may take or switch the connection. Samsung recommends checking existing connections and unpairing and re-pairing in its Galaxy Bluetooth troubleshooting steps.
Find out whether the earbuds or source device is responsible
Use two cross-tests: pair the suspect earbuds with a different phone or computer, and connect another Bluetooth headset to the original source. Also note whether the problem changes with location or happens with both streamed and locally stored audio. These comparisons narrow down where to troubleshoot next; they are diagnostic clues, not definitive hardware tests.

- If the dropouts follow the earbuds across multiple sources, consult the earbud maker’s model-specific support or service instructions.
- If the problem stays with one phone, tablet, or computer, follow that device’s Bluetooth troubleshooting steps.

If the earbuds disconnect from a Windows PC, Microsoft recommends running the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help on Windows 11. Its disconnect guide also includes checking Energy Saver, Bluetooth adapter power management, Bluetooth Support Service, and the driver. Windows labels and available settings can vary by build and adapter, so use Microsoft’s current instructions rather than assuming every PC has identical menus.

- Run the troubleshooter: Open Get Help and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter, following its prompts.
- Check Energy Saver: Turn off Energy Saver temporarily and see whether the connection improves.
- Check adapter power management: Open Device Manager, find the Bluetooth adapter, and check its Power Management settings. If the option is present, clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service: Follow Microsoft’s instructions to restart the service, then test the earbuds again.
- Update the Bluetooth driver: Check for an updated driver using the PC or adapter manufacturer’s instructions.

Brand-specific guidance
Galaxy Buds
Samsung’s steps include checking fit, charge, range, obstructions or interference, software, and existing connections. Restart or reset and re-pair only as appropriate for the model. The approximate 30-foot guidance is environment-dependent, and procedures and app support vary. Start with Galaxy Buds connection help and Samsung’s earbuds connection guide.
Pixel Buds
Google recommends confirming Bluetooth is on for the source, keeping the buds close and paired, and moving away from potential 2.4 GHz interference such as routers, microwaves, wireless speakers, and baby monitors. Use the instructions for your specific model for reset or service; the cited connectivity page does not establish one reset process for every Pixel Buds model. AirPods and other Bluetooth headphones
For intermittent or distorted audio, Apple recommends testing whether the problem occurs with stored content as well as streaming and reducing wireless interference. Follow Apple’s current, model-specific reset procedure if needed; do not assume another brand’s reset steps apply. See Apple’s headphone audio guidance and Apple’s wireless-interference guidance.
When to contact support
Contact the earbud maker if the connection still drops after the basic checks and re-pairing, especially if the problem follows the earbuds when used with another source. If only one source device has trouble, use that manufacturer’s Bluetooth support steps. Avoid assuming the earbuds need replacement until these checks or the manufacturer’s service guidance point to an earbud fault.
