A Blue Yeti that is not working in Windows 11 usually falls into one of three categories: Windows is blocking microphone access, the Yeti is not selected as the recording device, or Windows is not detecting the USB microphone at all. Work through the checks in that order to distinguish a settings problem from a USB, driver, or hardware problem.

1. Check the Yeti’s physical controls and USB connection

Before changing Windows settings, check the microphone itself:

  • Press the Yeti’s Mute button once. An active mute state prevents the microphone from sending usable audio.
  • Turn the Gain knob up to a moderate level. Gain controls the microphone’s main input level; it is separate from Windows’ software input volume.
  • Confirm that the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Try a different USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than a hub or dock.
  • If the Yeti’s LED does not turn on, try another compatible USB cable and another USB Type-A port.

Blue also recommends testing the microphone on another computer. If it is not detected there either, the cable or microphone is more likely to be the problem than a Windows 11 setting. Microsoft also recommends trying another USB port for USB audio hardware. See Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance and the Blue Yeti troubleshooting document.

2. Allow microphone access in Windows 11

Windows can prevent applications from using the Yeti even when the microphone is connected correctly.

  • Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
  • Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & security > Microphone.
  3. Turn on Microphone access.
  4. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  5. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.

The last switch is important for traditional desktop programs, including many browsers, recording tools, chat clients, and streaming applications. Desktop programs do not normally appear as separate entries in the app list.

If only one Microsoft Store-style app is failing, enable its individual toggle under Let apps access your microphone if it is listed. For a traditional desktop application, use Let desktop apps access your microphone. The current Windows 11 path is Privacy & security > Microphone; Settings > Privacy > Microphone is older Windows 10 wording.

3. Select the Blue Yeti as the input device

Connecting the Yeti does not guarantee that Windows or your application will use it for recording.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Scroll to Input.
  3. Open Choose a device for speaking or recording.
  4. Select the Blue Yeti.

Do not confuse Input and Output. Input is the microphone used to record your voice. Output is where Windows sends sound. You can use the Yeti as the input while selecting headphones connected to the Yeti’s headphone jack—or another device—as the output. Selecting the Yeti only under Output does not make it the recording microphone.

4. Test the Yeti in Windows before testing an app

Windows 11 includes a recording test that helps identify whether the operating system is receiving audio.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the Blue Yeti.
  3. Under Input settings, select Start test.
  4. Speak normally toward the front of the Yeti.
  5. Select Stop test, then select Play to hear the sample.
  6. Adjust Input volume if the recording is too quiet.

If the test plays your voice, the microphone and Windows input path are working. The remaining problem is probably inside the recording, meeting, browser, or streaming application. Open that application’s audio settings and explicitly choose the Blue Yeti rather than leaving its microphone choice on Default.

If the test records silence, check the Yeti’s mute button and gain knob again, then continue with the detection and driver steps below.

5. Check whether Windows detects the Yeti

Return to Settings > System > Sound and inspect the devices under Input. The Yeti should be available as a recording device. If Windows lists only something such as Microphone Array and never lists the Yeti, this is a detection problem—not simply a low-volume problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disconnect and reconnect the Yeti, then check the list again. Also test another USB port. If the microphone is detected but produces no sound, focus on permissions, mute, gain, and input volume. If it is missing entirely, continue with Device Manager.

6. Reinstall the audio device in Device Manager

Windows normally uses its built-in USB audio support for a standard Blue Yeti. You do not generally need to download a special Blue Yeti Windows 11 driver. Reinstalling the audio device can repair a damaged or incorrectly loaded device entry.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the applicable audio device. Look for an entry associated with the Yeti or USB audio.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If Windows displays Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it when appropriate, then select Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows with the Yeti connected.

After the restart, open Device Manager again. Right-click Sound, video and game controllers and select Scan for hardware changes. If the audio device is present, right-click it, select Update driver, and follow the prompts.

7. Try the generic USB Audio Device driver

If the Blue device has a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, Blue’s troubleshooting material provides a generic-driver fallback. The wording in that document comes from older Windows versions, but the principle still applies:

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
  1. Right-click the Yeti or affected audio device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Choose the option to browse your computer for driver software.
  4. Choose the option to select from a list of available drivers.
  5. Select USB Audio Device.
  6. Select Next, then restart Windows if prompted.

Windows 11 may present slightly different labels, but Update driver, the local driver list, and USB Audio Device are the relevant choices. A standard Yeti normally relies on Windows’ USB audio stack, so installing Logitech G HUB is not an established requirement for basic detection or recording.

8. Restart Windows audio services

A stalled Windows audio service can leave a USB microphone visible but unusable. You can restart the services from the Services console:

  1. Search the taskbar for services and open the result.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart. Confirm if asked.
  3. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  4. Repeat for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) if Windows offers the Restart command.

Alternatively, open Win + X > Windows Terminal (Admin) and run these commands one at a time:

  1. net stop audiosrv
  2. net stop audioendpointbuilder
  3. net start audiosrv
  4. net start audioendpointbuilder

This command sequence is community troubleshooting guidance rather than a Microsoft-confirmed Blue Yeti-specific fix. If a service refuses to stop or start, restart Windows and test the microphone again.

9. Reset USB controller entries if the device classification is wrong

In some reported cases, a Yeti stopped behaving normally after an update or appeared under Sound, video and game controllers without appearing as expected among audio inputs. A reported workaround is to reset USB controller entries:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click a relevant USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Repeat for the relevant hub entries.
  6. Restart Windows. Windows should redetect the USB controllers.

This is a reported workaround, not a guaranteed solution for every Yeti or every Windows update. Do not remove devices indiscriminately if you are unsure which USB controller is involved; temporarily disconnecting other USB equipment can make the result easier to identify.

10. Turn off audio enhancements when monitoring is faulty

Audio enhancements can interfere with playback or monitoring, particularly when you are listening through headphones connected to the Yeti.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the device you are using to listen.
  3. Scroll to Advanced settings.
  4. Set Audio enhancements to Off.

This setting is documented by Microsoft under output-device troubleshooting. It will not make an undetected Yeti appear under Input, but it can help when recording works and the problem is limited to monitoring or application audio.

What the symptoms usually mean

Symptom Most likely area to check
Yeti is missing from Input USB port, cable, Device Manager, USB controller, or microphone hardware
Yeti appears, but Windows records silence Mute button, gain, Input volume, or microphone permissions
Windows test works, but one app does not That app’s microphone selection and Windows app permissions
Voice is extremely quiet Yeti gain and Windows Input volume
Recording works, but monitoring is silent Output selection, headphone connection, or audio enhancements
LED never turns on USB cable, USB port, power, or hardware

Was a Windows update responsible?

Microsoft Q&A includes individual reports from November 15, 2024, and February 3, 2025, describing Blue Yeti detection or recording failures after Windows updates. These reports do not establish that one specific Windows 11 version or update universally breaks every Yeti.

Use update timing as a clue, not a diagnosis. First test another USB port, check permissions, reinstall the audio device, and test the Yeti on another computer. If the microphone works on another computer but remains absent from Windows 11 after those steps, continue with device-specific or USB troubleshooting rather than assuming that an unrelated application will fix it.

When the Yeti is probably faulty

Hardware becomes the leading suspect when all of the following are true:

  • The Yeti’s LED does not turn on with a known-good cable and multiple USB ports.
  • It is absent from Input and Device Manager.
  • It is not detected on another computer.
  • Windows permissions and audio services are functioning normally for other microphones.

If it works on another computer, the microphone itself is less likely to be defective; focus on the original computer’s USB controllers, audio devices, and Windows configuration.

Do not use the old Windows 10 troubleshooting paths

Some search results still recommend Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Recording Audio. That is Windows 10 wording. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Likewise, current microphone permissions are under Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, not the old Windows 10 Privacy page.

FAQ

Why is my Blue Yeti not showing under Input in Windows 11?

That indicates a detection problem rather than a simple volume problem. Try another USB port and cable, test another computer, then reinstall or rescan the device through Device Manager. If it is still absent everywhere, suspect the cable or microphone hardware.

Does the Blue Yeti need a special Windows 11 driver?

A standard Blue Yeti normally uses Windows’ USB audio stack. Blue’s fallback procedure uses the generic USB Audio Device driver, so a special downloadable driver is not generally required for basic recording.

Why does my Yeti work in Windows but not in one application?

Check Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and enable the app’s toggle if it is listed. For a traditional desktop program, enable Let desktop apps access your microphone. Then open the application’s audio settings and select the Blue Yeti explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can I hear audio through the Yeti but cannot record with it?

Hearing audio concerns the Output device. Recording requires the Yeti to be selected under Input at Start > Settings > System > Sound. Check both selections separately.

Should I install Logitech G HUB to fix a Blue Yeti?

It is not established by the cited Microsoft or Blue troubleshooting guidance as a required fix for standard Yeti detection or recording. Check Windows permissions, the USB connection, Input selection, and the built-in USB Audio Device driver first.

The Bottom Line

Start with the physical mute, gain, cable, and USB port, then enable all three Windows 11 microphone-permission switches. Select the Yeti under Input, run Windows’ Start test, and only then move to Device Manager, audio-service resets, or USB-controller troubleshooting. If the Yeti is not detected on a second computer with another cable, software changes are unlikely to solve the problem.
