If your iPhone’s battery drains faster or it feels warm after updating to iOS 27, first check Settings > Battery. Apple says update-related tasks can continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and temperature; wait a few days, then check Battery again. If the phone shows a temperature warning, turn it off and let it cool before using it.
1. Check whether iOS still reports update activity
Open Settings > Battery and look above Daily Usage for a suggestion or insight such as Ongoing iOS Update. Apple says update tasks may continue in the background after you can start using the phone, temporarily affecting battery life and thermal performance. The Battery screen can show when that activity is ongoing.
Apple’s advice is to wait a few days after an update and check Battery again. It does not set a precise deadline for background work to finish, so “a few days” is guidance, not a guarantee that every case will resolve by then.
2. Find what is actually using the battery
In Settings > Battery, review the Daily Usage chart and App and System Activity Usage. Compare today’s use with the recent seven-day view, then inspect the apps and system activity at the top of the list. Labels can point to a more specific cause than the update itself:

- Background Activity: an app is doing work while not actively in use.
- No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal: the phone may be using more power to maintain a connection.
- Notifications: an app’s notifications may be contributing to activity.
Use the activity shown on your iPhone to decide what to adjust; disabling features at random can make the phone less useful without addressing the cause.
3. Reduce power use when signal or connectivity is the issue
Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular data for internet access, and a stronger Wi-Fi or cellular signal uses less energy than a weak one. If the Battery screen points to poor coverage, connect to reliable Wi-Fi where possible. If you do not need connectivity and have no coverage, Airplane Mode may help.

On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Low Power Mode can reduce or disable selected features, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Adaptive Power is available only on certain listed models running iOS 26 or later; it is not available on every iPhone.
4. Distinguish ordinary warmth from a temperature warning
An iPhone can feel warmer during setup, a backup restore, a major software update, wireless charging, demanding apps, or high-quality video streaming. Apple says it should cool when that process or activity finishes. If no temperature warning appears, Apple says you can continue using the device.

Apple lists an ambient operating range of 0–35 °C (32–95 °F) and a storage range of −20–45 °C (−4–113 °F). Keep the phone out of a hot car and avoid prolonged direct sunlight. If it displays a temperature warning:
- Turn off the iPhone.
- Move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight.
- Leave it off and allow it to cool before using it again.
When an iPhone is too warm, it may slow or stop charging, dim or blank the display, weaken mobile signal, or reduce performance.

5. Check battery health if the drain continues
If the battery problem persists after the initial post-update period, check battery health:
- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
Apple says to consider battery replacement if the status displays Service. Post-update drain by itself does not establish that the battery needs replacement.

What is known about iOS 27 specifically
Apple’s support guidance describes post-update background work in general; it does not name a particular iOS 27 task or publish a specific recovery timeline. A September 15, 2026 report by 9to5Mac described background setup such as indexing data and files, downloading assets, and updating apps, and attributed potentially several days of impact to iOS 27-related Siri reindexing. That is the publication’s reporting, not an Apple-guaranteed duration. Reports from other users alone do not establish how widespread a problem is or what caused it on an individual phone.
