If your Android phone started losing charge faster after a system or manufacturer skin update, first check battery usage and give the phone time to finish any post-update work. Then restart, install pending updates, and test whether an app or poor network conditions are responsible. Menu names differ by phone, Android version, and manufacturer, so use your handset maker’s support page for model-specific instructions.
Could the battery drain be temporary?
On Pixel phones, Google says a little extra battery drain after a software update is normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Google advises seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days. That guidance is Pixel-specific; it is not a guaranteed settling period for every Android phone or skin. For other Android phones, don’t assume the update itself is the only cause. A newly updated or installed app, weak signal, heavier screen use, or battery aging can also explain a change.
Check what is using the battery
Before changing several settings, open your phone’s Battery settings and inspect battery usage. Look for an app or activity that stands out, especially one installed or updated around the time the drain began. Android’s menu path and available controls vary by device; Google’s general guidance recommends restricting apps with high usage where appropriate and keeping Adaptive Battery enabled if your phone offers it. - If one app dominates usage, install any update for it and review its background battery permissions or usage controls.
- If no app stands out, continue with the device-wide checks below rather than disabling optimization features at random.
- Pixel battery diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later, and some Pixel instructions require Android 14 or newer. Follow the instructions for your model and software version. Google Pixel Phone Help
Restart the phone and install pending updates
- Restart the phone using its power menu. The exact button combination or menu wording can vary by model.
- Reconnect to a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile connection, then check Settings for a pending system update. Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open Google Play and update pending apps. An app problem can persist even when Android itself is up to date.
- After restarting and updating, check Battery usage again to see whether the same app or activity remains unusually high.
Google recommends rebooting and checking for Android and app updates when battery problems persist. Some general Android battery steps apply only to Android 13 and newer, and Battery Saver availability varies by phone. Google Android Help
Test whether a downloaded app is responsible
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps, making it useful for comparison. The way to enter safe mode differs by manufacturer, so use the instructions for your exact phone rather than relying on a button sequence intended for another model. Google Android Help

- Start the phone in safe mode using your manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use the phone under similar conditions to normal use and see whether the battery drain improves.
- If it does, restart normally and remove or investigate recently installed apps one at a time, checking battery use after each change.
Improvement in safe mode points toward a downloaded app, but does not identify which one or guarantee that uninstalling an app will resolve every battery issue.
Check signal, screen use, heat, and connectivity
Battery use can change with what the phone is doing and the conditions around it. Samsung identifies weak signal and background apps as possible causes of faster Galaxy battery drain. It also notes that 5G can use more power in the circumstances described on its support page; this is Galaxy-specific guidance, not a claim that every 5G connection always drains more battery. - Consider whether the phone has been in a weak-signal area, streaming video or music, navigating, using a hotspot, or relying on location services more than usual.
- For a short-term runtime boost, lower screen brightness or shorten screen timeout. Battery Saver can also help, though battery-saving modes may delay some app activity.
- Change mobile-network settings only when practical and safe. If you test a different network mode, compare usage under similar conditions rather than treating one observation as a controlled test.
- If the phone is unusually hot, reduce demanding use and let it cool. A hot environment or intensive activity may affect battery use independently of the update.

Know when battery aging may be involved
A battery’s capacity gradually decreases with repeated charging and discharging, and Samsung says reduced capacity cannot be restored. That general aging process does not, by itself, prove that a new battery symptom after an update is caused by battery failure. If your phone is older or its runtime had already been declining, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider about model-specific battery diagnostics. Samsung Support Ireland

Contact support before considering a factory reset
If the drain remains severe after routine checks, contact the handset maker or your carrier. Have the phone model, Android and skin version, update date, and battery-usage screen ready. For a Pixel, Google recommends seeking help if unusual post-update drain continues beyond a few days. Google Pixel Phone Help
A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine update fix. Google warns that a factory data reset removes phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up important information before resetting, and follow the exact instructions for your handset. Google Android Help
