If Baldur’s Gate 3 mods are not appearing or loading, first identify whether you installed them through the in-game Mod Manager or a third-party tool. Then check for updates, disable mods to isolate the cause, and—if you use a third-party manager—verify that its load order was exported to the correct game profile. The right fix depends on which path you use; no single cleanup step repairs every mod problem.
First, identify how you installed the mod
Baldur’s Gate 3 has an in-game Mod Manager for supported mods, while third-party mods may be installed and managed with other programs or files. The troubleshooting steps differ: an in-game mod can show an update control, while a third-party load order may need to be exported to the profile file the game reads.

Update or disable in-game supported mods
Look for an available update
- Open Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager and select the Installed tab.
- Check whether the affected mod has an Update button. Larian says this appears when a mod needs an update; use it to update through the interface.
- Retry the affected save or launch after updating.
Test with mods disabled
Disable installed mods and retry the same affected save or launch. If the problem goes away, a mod or interaction among mods is likely involved. Re-enable mods in a controlled way to narrow down which one is responsible, then contact its author and leave details on the mod listing. Modded saves may fail at a loading percentage; other possible symptoms include launch crashes, missing or overlapping UI, missing makeup or face textures, and naked avatars in character creation. These symptoms alone do not identify the culprit.

Clean up third-party files after a game update
If a launch or in-game issue began after a major update and you use third-party mods, stale files may be involved. Larian advises removing existing mod files as a troubleshooting step. Before deleting anything, confirm you are working in the correct BG3 installation and user profile; removing files can remove third-party mod state.
- Use the launcher’s gear menu to open the game’s installation or profile folder, or navigate to the correct location yourself.
- In the game installation, inspect
Data/ModsandData/Public, if those folders are present, for existing third-party mod files. - If you are not using a new profile for the current patch, inspect the profile folder for
modsettings.lsx; Larian’s cleanup guidance says to delete it when applicable. - Retry the game, then reinstall or configure only mods confirmed to work with your current game version.
On Windows, BG3 stores its local user data in AppData rather than Documents. The Mods folder shortcut is %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods. Use the launcher’s gear menu if you are unsure which profile or installation is active. Larian’s Mod Issues FAQ covers these locations.

Make sure BG3 Mod Manager exported the load order
BG3 Mod Manager is a third-party utility. Its maintainer’s README says to run the game at least once to create the profile and Mods folders, install the prerequisites documented by the utility, and use its latest release. Keep the portable manager outside protected Program Files and verify its detected paths before making changes. See the BG3 Mod Manager README.
Verify paths, profile, and campaign
- Start BG3 once if you have not already; the game needs to create its user folders. Create any new profile in-game.
- Open BG3 Mod Manager and check that the detected game Data path points to the game’s
Datafolder, which contains files such asGustav.pak. Confirm the profile path is also correct. - If path detection failed, open Settings → Preferences, set the paths manually, save, and refresh.
- Select the intended Public profile and the campaign you want to use. Organize the active mods in the load order.
- Choose Export Load Order to Game or use File → Export Order to Game.
- Launch BG3 using that profile and check whether the mods appear.
Export matters because the game reads modsettings.lsx for the load order; having mod files in a folder is not the same as exporting the order the game should use.

Check common setup mistakes
- Do not put subfolders inside the local Mods folder, according to the manager maintainer.
- Confirm the Game Data Path points to the actual game
Datafolder, not a parent folder or another installation. - Make sure you selected and exported the intended campaign’s order.
- If
modsettings.lsxresets when the game launches, the manager README says one or more mods are encountering an error and the game clears the order. Check the involved mods for errors or incompatibility rather than repeatedly exporting the same failing setup.
For multiplayer, match every player’s mods
Every member of a multiplayer party needs the exact same mods and versions. Each player should check the in-game Mod Manager’s Installed tab for an Update indicator and ensure their setup matches the rest of the party. Larian’s Official Mod Support page describes version matching for multiplayer.

If disabling mods does not fix the issue, report a possible base-game problem to Larian support rather than assuming a particular mod is responsible. If the launcher shows a data-mismatch warning, Larian says to check %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache for steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt, or a similarly named galaxy_... file for GOG. These logs can help identify altered files.
