Before troubleshooting, check the game version and PC requirements
Larian’s Hotfix #36 announcement, dated March 26, 2026, identifies version 4.1.1.7209685. It says the hotfix addressed a framerate drop that could lead to a crash while loading a save, along with several other crashes. That is a specific fix in a dated release—not a guarantee that every current crash or save problem is resolved. Check the installed version and the official news for later updates.

Larian’s PC system requirements state that a solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play and recommend installing the game on one. Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD if you are checking whether the PC meets requirements; an SSD is not a general fix for crashes, mod conflicts, or corrupted saves.
If Baldur’s Gate 3 crashes on startup
Use this sequence to isolate common causes. Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can tell which step mattered.

- Close possible software conflicts. Exit nonessential programs, particularly antivirus or firewall tools, graphics overlays, monitoring or tuning utilities, and chat applications. Larian identifies these as possible sources of issues. If ASUS Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer is installed, disable or uninstall it for a test; Larian specifically flags it as a possible cause of startup crashes.
- Verify the installation. In Steam, open the game’s properties and use “Verify Integrity of Game Files.” In GOG Galaxy, use “Verify / Repair.” These checks compare local installation files against the launcher’s expected files.
- Test the other renderer. In the game launcher, switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan, then try starting the game again. Larian notes that Vulkan may be faster in many cases but can be less stable; neither option is best for every PC.
- Address runtime or system errors only when relevant. If an error names a Visual C++ DLL, follow Larian’s Visual C++ Redistributable guidance. Also check for graphics-driver and Windows updates. Reinstalling runtimes is not a universal crash remedy when there is no related error.
- Test without mods. Remove mods temporarily, including older mod files in the game’s data folders and local AppData locations. Old files can remain in the current profile even after a mod is no longer in use. Keep a copy of files you may need to restore.
- Clear the LevelCache only after simpler checks. If this is not a fresh install, Larian says corrupt contents in the LevelCache folder can affect saving or loading. Follow the folder guidance in its startup-crash FAQ; do not confuse the cache with the profile folder, which contains saves and configuration.
- Use isolation tests if the crash continues. Check Event Viewer for the game’s application error and faulting module. Larian also suggests testing a clean boot or another Windows account. These tests can help identify a software or account conflict; they are not guaranteed repairs.
If the game crashes during gameplay
First remove old mod files and verify the installation through Steam or GOG as described above. If the crash persists, note when it happens—during combat, outside combat, or while using a particular skill or spell—then check Event Viewer for the application error or faulting module. Larian’s gameplay-crash FAQ also recommends clean-boot and separate-Windows-account tests to help isolate conflicts.
If you test from another Windows account, you may need to copy a recent save there to reproduce the issue. Larian’s FAQ gives the profile save location. Before copying or moving anything, make a backup of the save files and account for cloud synchronization, which may restore synced profile data.
When the crash remains reproducible, contact Larian Support with a DxDiag report and relevant crash dumps. Include the circumstances of the crash, such as the area, whether combat was active, and any skill or spell involved; that context can help narrow down the failure.
If Baldur’s Gate 3 will not save or a save will not load
Separate these symptoms: a save command that fails is not necessarily a corrupted save, and a crash while loading a save is not the same as being unable to save. Larian lists distinct support paths for “Unable to Save” and errors or crashes when loading saves. Follow the live FAQ for the exact symptom; the support index’s visible excerpt for save failures asks users to close nonessential programs, particularly antivirus or backup software monitoring disk activity, but does not show the full procedure.

For either symptom, Larian’s startup FAQ notes that corrupt LevelCache contents can interfere with saving or loading. Consult its folder instructions before clearing cache files. Save data lives in the local profile, so copy important saves before any file operation and consider whether a cloud client could re-sync data.
If the symptom is specifically a crash during loading, check the installed version and Larian’s current release notes. Hotfix #36 (version 4.1.1.7209685, announced March 26, 2026) addressed one reported framerate-drop-and-crash case during save loading; it does not establish that an unrelated loading failure has the same cause.

Protect saves before changing profile data
Cache cleanup and profile-folder resets carry different risks. The LevelCache is not the same thing as the profile folder, which contains saved games and configuration. Treat profile changes as a later diagnostic, not an early routine step:
- Make a separate copy of saves you want to preserve before moving or renaming profile data.
- Use Larian’s support instructions to identify the correct local folder rather than deleting files based on a guessed path.
- Prefer renaming a profile folder over deleting it when testing a clean profile, so the original data remains available for recovery.
- Pause to consider cloud synchronization: a client may restore synced profile data or create conflicting versions.

For all four cases, avoid changing several variables at once. Reversible checks such as closing overlays, verifying files, and switching renderer are safer starting points than altering profile data, which can affect local saves.
