If the game works, investigate the mod versions, requirements, and load order; if it still crashes, check for leftover mod files and repair the game installation. Back up your profile and saves before removing files: some modded saves may depend on the content being removed.
Before troubleshooting, record what happens
Write down whether BG3 crashes at startup, while loading a particular save, or during play. Note your game version, platform and store, mod manager, installed mods, and current load order. Keep a copy of your save/profile and load-order information before changing the setup. That gives you a way to restore the original state and helps distinguish a general game crash from one tied to a particular save or mod.
Disable mods and repeat the crash
For mods installed through BG3’s in-game Mod Manager, open the manager and uncheck the installed mods. Then repeat the same action that triggered the crash—for example, start the game or load the affected save.
- The crash stops: A mod or interaction between mods is implicated. Check the mods’ requirements and compatibility notes, then contact the likely mod author if the problem continues.
- The crash continues: Mods are not confirmed as the cause. Larian’s guidance says a problem that persists with supported mods disabled may be a base-game issue to report to Larian Support.
Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods. For third-party mods, use the manager and instructions associated with those mods; the in-game Mod Manager’s disable controls are not a universal cleanup method.

Use the cleanup path for your mod type
Windows file paths below apply to Windows PC, not consoles or Mac. Back up relevant files before deleting anything. Removing a mod during a playthrough can make a save fail to load or affect content in that save, particularly when the mod adds spells, items, or status effects.

Official in-game mods
Read each mod’s description and check for requirements, update notes, and reported problems. Do not assume that a game update means every third-party mod has been updated or is compatible. For modded multiplayer, all participants need the same mods and versions.

Third-party mods and leftover files on Windows
Larian’s cleanup guidance distinguishes third-party mods from mods managed in-game. In the BG3 installation’s Data folder, check for Mods and Public folders; Larian identifies these as safe to delete when following its third-party-mod cleanup procedure. Also check the current Windows profile at %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods.
If you migrated from an older profile, files previously stored under Documents may have been copied into Local AppData, so old mod files can remain there. Larian also describes circumstances in which you can delete the profile’s modsettings.lsx, including when you are not using a new profile for the current patch. Do not treat that as a universal instruction: preserve a backup and follow Larian’s guidance for your setup. Reinstalling the game may not remove third-party mod files from the profile.

Check BG3 Mod Manager’s load-order export
If you use BG3 Mod Manager, active mods need to be exported to the game; exporting updates modsettings.lsx. Its project documentation also cautions against subfolders in the Mods directory and notes that a mod error can cause the game to clear the load order. After establishing a working baseline, add mods one at a time or in small batches and retest to identify a conflict.
Repair the game files if the crash remains
If disabling or removing mods has not resolved the problem, use your PC store’s repair workflow. These steps are for Windows PC versions; other platforms have different file-management and repair options.

- Steam: In your Library, right-click Baldur’s Gate 3 and open Properties. Go to Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- GOG Galaxy: Open the game’s menu, choose Manage Installation, then Verify / Repair.
If the launcher reported a data mismatch, Larian’s Windows guidance points to a version-specific _alteredFiles.txt in %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache. For crashes while loading saves, Larian also identifies the LevelCache folder as a possible troubleshooting point. Follow the official instructions for the relevant symptom rather than deleting unrelated profile data.
Find crash details in Windows
Windows Event Viewer may identify the faulting application or module associated with a recent BG3 crash. Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs → Application, and inspect the error recorded at the time of the crash. A faulting module is a useful clue to include in a support report, not proof on its own that a particular mod or component caused the problem.

Send the right information to the right support contact
If a mod appears to cause the crash
Contact the author through the mod’s listing or support channel. Include your game version, mod version, steps to reproduce the crash, and relevant screenshots or logs. Larian does not directly fix player-created mods.
If the crash persists without mods
Report the issue to Larian Support. Include when the crash occurs, your platform and store, game version, what you tried, and any available crash details or Event Viewer faulting module. Follow Larian’s support instructions for system information and logs.
