AxiosError: Network Error means Axios did not receive a response it could use; it does not, by itself, prove that CORS is the problem. Check the browser’s Console and Network panel to identify whether the failure is a CORS or preflight block, a bad URL, a connection or DNS problem, TLS, mixed content, or another browser or server issue. Then fix the layer responsible: the API, your frontend configuration, or the network.

What “Network Error” means in Axios

Axios describes ERR_NETWORK as a “Network-related issue.” In a browser, the same generic error can result from a CORS restriction or mixed-content policy as well as an ordinary connection failure. Browser security may prevent JavaScript from seeing the underlying response or error details, so the Axios message alone cannot identify the cause. Axios documentation

A missing HTTP status in the catch block is not proof of CORS. First distinguish an HTTP response Axios can read, a request that was sent but produced no readable response, and a failure while Axios was setting up the request:

if (error.response) {
  // Axios received a response it can read.
} else if (error.request) {
  // A request was made, but no readable response arrived.
  // Inspect the browser Console and Network panel.
} else {
  // Check request setup, URL, and Axios configuration.
}

A browser may withhold a blocked cross-origin response from page JavaScript. Avoid sharing a complete error object or request configuration without checking for tokens, credentials, or other secrets.

How to find the cause in browser DevTools

  1. Open DevTools before reproducing the failure. In most browsers, you can open it from the browser menu or by right-clicking the page and choosing Inspect.
  2. Open the Console, repeat the action that fails, and read the message associated with the request. A message that explicitly names CORS or says the request was blocked by CORS policy points toward a browser cross-origin restriction.
  3. Open the Network panel and locate the failed request. Check its URL, scheme, port, status or failure reason, and whether an OPTIONS request appears before it.
  4. If an OPTIONS entry is red or rejected, inspect the preflight response and the server’s allowed methods and headers. A rejected preflight can stop the browser from sending the actual application request.
  5. If the request appears to receive a response but Axios cannot read it, check whether the response includes a CORS permission header matching the page’s origin. The browser can withhold a response body from JavaScript when that permission is missing.

For browser CORS errors, the Console and Network panel are more useful than the generic Axios message. See MDN’s guide to CORS errors and MDN’s explanation of CORS requests that do not succeed.

Match the browser evidence to a fix

  • CORS or failed preflight: Configure the destination API’s response permissions, including the allowed origin and, when needed, methods and requested headers. If the request uses credentials, configure a compatible explicit origin and credentials permission; wildcard origin does not work with credentialed requests.
  • DNS failure or connection refused: Verify the hostname, address, API service status, and network route. For a local API, check that the service is running and that the URL uses the correct scheme and port.
  • Timeout: Check whether the endpoint is responding and inspect relevant server or network logs.
  • TLS or certificate error: Correct the certificate or TLS configuration for the endpoint.
  • Mixed content: An HTTPS page cannot freely load an HTTP resource. Serve the API or resource over HTTPS.
  • Unexpected URL or endpoint: Compare the request shown in Network with the URL your application intends to call; correct the host, path, scheme, or port as needed.
  • Possible extension or privacy-tool blocking: When appropriate, retry with extensions disabled or in a private window to see whether the browser environment changes the result.
  • Server does not respond: Confirm the endpoint is available and investigate the server’s logs or health.

Choose the right CORS solution for your API

If you control the API

Set CORS permissions on the API response, not in Axios. The server must allow the requesting page’s origin. If the browser sends a preflight, the server must handle OPTIONS and return the required allowed method and header information. For credentialed requests, the server must use a compatible explicit origin and credential configuration.

If the API belongs to a third party

Your browser code cannot force another operator to permit your site. If the provider does not allow browser access, call the remote API from a backend you control and return the needed data to your frontend. This also keeps private API credentials on your server rather than exposing them in browser code. A public proxy may observe requests, so it is appropriate only for public, non-sensitive data when its terms and behavior are acceptable.

If you are using a development proxy

A development-server proxy can route local requests so they appear same-origin during development. That can help with local routing, but it does not configure the production server. Check the production route and API CORS configuration separately.

Why adding a CORS header to Axios does not fix it

Access-Control-Allow-Origin is a permission the destination server sends in its response; it is not a request header that a browser client can use to grant itself access. Adding it to Axios does not make the API allow your page. Likewise, no-cors is not a general Axios workaround: an opaque response does not give application code readable JSON. Disabling browser security is not a suitable fix. CORS.dev’s Axios CORS explanation
