AutoCAD may fail to launch because a process is stuck, security software is blocking it, licensing components need repair, or the installation or user settings are damaged. First identify where startup stops, then try the targeted fixes below before reinstalling.
These steps focus on Windows. If AutoCAD opens but only one DWG fails, use the drawing-specific recovery steps near the end instead of reinstalling the program.
1. Identify what “not opening” means

2. Close a stuck AutoCAD process and restart Windows
Sometimes the AutoCAD window disappears, but acad.exe remains running. A second launch attempt may then appear to do nothing.
- Close AutoCAD and other Autodesk applications.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, look for acad.exe. Also check for Autodesk processes that remain after all Autodesk applications are closed.
- Select the stuck process and choose End task.
- Restart Windows and try AutoCAD again.
If acad.exe returns immediately or remains impossible to close, restart Windows rather than repeatedly launching the shortcut. Autodesk also recommends closing all Autodesk products and restarting when this process remains after installation.

3. Check the firewall and antivirus
Autodesk identifies firewall blockage of acad.exe as a cause of failed launches and freezes at the initial file-selection screen. Security software can also block licensing communication or installation; Autodesk specifically notes that Kaspersky can block Autodesk installation.
Allow AutoCAD through Windows Firewall
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall.
- Click Change settings, then allow AutoCAD on the network types appropriate for your environment.
- If AutoCAD is not listed, use Allow another app and browse to the AutoCAD installation folder to select acad.exe.
The exact AutoCAD folder varies by release and installation method. If your security product has its own firewall, add the same exception there. If antivirus cannot be disabled for testing, add Autodesk software to its exclusions according to your organization’s security policy.
Do not permanently disable security software or create broad exclusions without approval on a managed work computer. If AutoCAD starts after a temporary security test, configure a narrow exception instead.
4. Check Autodesk licensing before reinstalling
The Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service applies to Autodesk product versions 2020 and newer. If it is stopped or corrupted, AutoCAD may fail to launch or show a licensing error. Versions 2019 and earlier use a separate licensing troubleshooting path, so do not apply this procedure to them.
Check the basic licensing conditions
- Sign in with the Autodesk Account to which the AutoCAD license is assigned, and confirm the selected license type is correct.
- Make sure the computer is connected to the internet. Standalone serial-number-based Autodesk software from 2020 onward may show a licensing error when launched offline.
- Check that Windows has the correct date, time, and time zone. Incorrect system time can prevent license validation.
- Verify that Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service is running. Also check that Autodesk Identity Manager and Autodesk Single Sign-On components are functioning and not corrupted.
- For Autodesk products 2024 and newer, consider repairing Autodesk Identity Manager if the licensing error began after an update or sign-in problem.
Repair the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Open File Explorer and go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\AdskLicensing.
- Right-click uninstall.exe and choose Run as administrator.
- Wait until the AdskLicensing folder is empty.
- Install the latest Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service from Autodesk Support.
- Restart Windows, sign in again, and launch AutoCAD.
These steps require administrator permissions. If the service will not install or start, check antivirus, firewall, Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes, and network restrictions before repeating the installer. For multi-user or network licensing, Autodesk also identifies network configuration, login cache, security blockage, and the FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS environment variable set to 3 as possible licensing-error factors; do not change that variable casually.
5. Install AutoCAD and licensing updates
Autodesk lists a missing licensing update as a cause of failed startup or a freeze at the initial file-selection screen. It also recommends installing current AutoCAD updates when the program crashes, freezes, or fails to launch.

- Open Autodesk Access from the Start menu.
- Install available AutoCAD and Autodesk component updates for your installed release.
- If Autodesk Access cannot be used, sign in to your Autodesk Account, open the product’s downloads or updates area, and install the current update for that exact AutoCAD release.
- Restart Windows and test AutoCAD.
6. Repair Microsoft Visual C++ components
A corrupted or incomplete Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installation can prevent AutoCAD from launching. One clue is a missing or corrupted MSVCP140.dll entry in Windows Event Viewer.
- Open Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.
- Find the installed Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entries.
- Check the x86 and x64 entries for the relevant year versions. Autodesk recommends looking for missing pairs, mismatched build numbers, or entries with missing file-size information.
- Reinstall the required components from Microsoft. If a repair option is available, you can try it first.
- Restart Windows and try AutoCAD.
Do not delete random DLL files from the AutoCAD folder or download individual DLLs from third-party websites. Repairing or reinstalling the official runtime package addresses the underlying installation problem more safely.

7. Reset AutoCAD settings
Corrupted user settings can cause startup failures, crashes, or an interface that loads but does not respond. Autodesk recommends resetting AutoCAD to its default settings.
- Open the Windows Start menu and expand the AutoCAD program folder.
- Select Reset Settings to Default or the similarly named reset shortcut.
- Back up custom profiles, templates, tool palettes, and CUI/CUIx customizations first if they are important.
- Confirm the reset and launch AutoCAD again.
If the Ribbon or menus are specifically unresponsive, the CUI/CUIx customization file may be damaged. Restore a known-good customization file or reset the customization rather than immediately reinstalling the entire program.
8. Test graphics and Windows compatibility settings
If AutoCAD opens and then freezes, a graphics driver or display compatibility problem may be involved.
Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver from the computer manufacturer or graphics-card manufacturer. Restart Windows after installation. On managed systems, use the driver approved by your IT department rather than an untested optional release.

Switch AutoCAD 2022 from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11
Autodesk recommends this workaround for freezes in AutoCAD 2022 products:
- Start AutoCAD if possible.
- Enter GFXDX12 in the command line and press Enter.
- Enter 0 and press Enter.
- Close and reopen AutoCAD.
Disable Windows fullscreen optimizations
- Right-click the AutoCAD shortcut or the AutoCAD executable.
- Select Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Click Apply, then OK.
9. Check whether restricted permissions caused the freeze
When AutoCAD was installed under a restricted Windows login, Autodesk reports that it can load and immediately freeze so that nothing can be selected. Install AutoCAD using a Windows account with Administrator rights.
- Sign in with a Windows account that has local administrator rights.
- Run the AutoCAD installer using Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows and test the program from the affected user account.
If the problem remains, Autodesk’s deeper procedure is a clean uninstall, removal of the Microsoft Visual C++ components, and a reinstall performed with Administrator rights. Back up custom AutoCAD settings and confirm that you have the correct installer and license credentials before doing this.
10. Repair or reinstall AutoCAD for your version
The available Windows maintenance options depend on the AutoCAD version. Autodesk removed the Repair and Reinstall choices from the Windows product-maintenance interface for AutoCAD 2022 and newer.

If a normal uninstall and reinstall carries the same problem forward, perform Autodesk’s clean-uninstall procedure. Remove the remaining Autodesk components specified for your release, restart Windows, download a fresh installer copy, and reinstall as an administrator. A clean uninstall is particularly relevant after a corrupted installation or an ADLSDK_UPDATE_REASON_UNKNOWN 20005 message stating that licensing has been tampered with.

- Enter SDI in AutoCAD and set its value to 0.
- Reset AutoCAD to its default settings.
- Install a newer AutoCAD version if one is available for your license.
- Uninstall and reinstall AutoCAD; use a clean uninstall if an ordinary reinstall does not help.
- If Autodesk Vault is installed, follow the Vault-specific troubleshooting procedure.
If the error occurs only with one drawing, check that file for OLE links and break them. The documented workaround uses SDI = 0; setting it to 1 is not the recommended fix for this error.

If the program starts and only a particular drawing fails, reinstalling AutoCAD is unlikely to solve the problem.

- Start AutoCAD without opening the problem file.
- Enter RECOVER and press Enter.
- Browse to the DWG and select it.
- After recovery completes, run AUDIT.
- Choose Yes when asked to fix errors.
Missing fonts can also interfere with a drawing. Check the missing-font dialog, or run STYLE to find text styles that reference unavailable fonts. Install the required .shx font in an AutoCAD support directory, or map the style to an available font such as romans.shx.
For a drawing that still causes freezes, copy and paste its contents into a new drawing. Autodesk also provides Regapp ID Cleanup and Scale List Cleanup utilities for files with problematic drawing data.
What to do if none of these fixes works
Record the exact AutoCAD version, Windows version, error text, and last step that worked. Also check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the failing module, such as MSVCP140.dll. This information helps distinguish licensing, runtime, graphics, and installation failures.
On a business computer, ask the administrator to check Autodesk account assignment, proxy and firewall rules, antivirus events, network-license configuration, and whether the environment variable FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS is set to 3. That variable is relevant to multi-user or network licensing and should not be changed casually.
